Chapter 4: The Man Everyone Thought Was Dead

Chapter 4: The Man Everyone Thought Was Dead

The detective lowered the document.

No one dared to speak.

The silence inside the ballroom felt heavier than the crystal chandeliers hanging overhead.

Daniel finally broke it.

"Who is it?"

Detective Reeves looked around the room before reading the final line aloud.

"If I am unable to protect my daughter, legal guardianship shall immediately transfer to my business partner and closest friend, Jonathan Hayes, until Lily reaches adulthood."

A ripple of confusion swept through the guests.

Jonathan Hayes.

The name sounded familiar.

Then someone gasped.

"Jonathan Hayes died with Richard."

Several others nodded.

Everyone remembered the tragic boating accident three years earlier.

The newspapers had reported that Richard Crawford and Jonathan Hayes disappeared during a violent storm off the coast. Richard's body had been recovered days later.

Jonathan's body never had.

Eventually, the court declared him legally dead.

Detective Bennett looked back at the document.

"It gets stranger."

She turned another page.

"This letter was updated six months after Richard's death."

Daniel frowned.

"That's impossible."

"Unless..."

She held up a notarized amendment bearing an official seal.

"...Jonathan Hayes was alive."

The room erupted into shocked whispers.

Vivian's face turned ghostly pale.

Detective Reeves immediately pulled out his phone.

"I want everything we have on Jonathan Hayes."

Within minutes, officers at headquarters began searching national databases.

One of the younger officers suddenly looked up from his laptop.

"Sir..."

"What is it?"

"I've got a financial alert."

"Explain."

"Someone has been paying Lily's school tuition anonymously."

Daniel looked at Lily.

"You went to school?"

Lily nodded shyly.

"Sometimes."

"Who took you?"

"A nice man."

"What nice man?"

"The one with the blue truck."

Amelia gently smiled.

"What was his name?"

Lily thought for several seconds.

"I called him Mr. Jon."

Daniel and Detective Reeves exchanged a look.

"Jonathan?"

Lily shrugged.

"He always told me..."

She hesitated.

"...that Daddy loved me very much."

Amelia felt tears sting her eyes.

"Did Aunt Vivian know about him?"

Lily's expression immediately changed.

She shook her head so hard that her hair flew across her face.

"No."

"He said..."

"You must never tell."

Across the ballroom, Vivian's breathing became uneven.

Her attorney hurried toward her.

"We need to leave."

She whispered furiously,

"I told you we can't."

"The police are watching."

"This investigation is getting out of control."

Before Vivian could respond, Detective Bennett walked over.

"Mrs. Crawford."

"What?"

"We'll need your passport."

Vivian stared at her.

"My passport?"

"We've received notice that a private jet filed a flight plan in your name thirty-five minutes ago."

Daniel slowly turned toward his aunt.

"You were leaving."

Vivian crossed her arms.

"I have business in Switzerland."

"Tonight?"

"It was already scheduled."

Detective Reeves wasn't convinced.

"The flight was filed immediately after the livestream began."

No one needed to say what everyone was thinking.

She had planned to run.

Meanwhile, officers continued searching the Crawford estate.

An hour later, Detective Reeves' phone rang.

He answered immediately.

"This is Reeves."

His expression hardened.

"When?"

He listened silently.

"Don't touch anything."

"We're on our way."

He hung up.

Daniel stepped closer.

"What happened?"

"They searched Vivian's private office."

"And?"

"They found a hidden safe."

Vivian's eyes widened.

"There was no cash."

"No jewelry."

"No passports."

"Only files."

"What kind of files?"

Detective Reeves looked directly at her.

"Files labeled with children's names."

The ballroom fell silent again.

Amelia instinctively held Lily closer.

"What children?"

"We don't know yet."

"But Lily's name is one of them."

Another officer hurried over carrying photographs sent from the search team.

The first image showed shelves filled with neatly organized folders.

Each one had a child's name.

A birth date.

A photograph.

The second image made Detective Bennett's stomach turn.

Every folder contained medical reports.

School records.

Behavior evaluations.

Psychological assessments.

Someone had been documenting children for years.

Vivian spoke before anyone asked.

"I run a charitable foundation."

"No," Detective Bennett replied quietly.

"You control children."

Lily suddenly tugged on Amelia's sleeve.

"I know that room."

Everyone looked at her.

"What room?" Amelia asked.

"The one with the folders."

"You've been there?"

Lily nodded.

"Aunt Vivian took me there."

"What happened?"

Lily looked down at the floor.

"I wasn't allowed to cry."

Amelia gently squeezed her hand.

"It's okay."

"You can tell us."

Lily's tiny voice barely rose above a whisper.

"She said..."

"If I told anyone..."

"...I'd disappear like Daddy."

Every adult in the room felt a chill run down their spine.

Just then, another call came through.

This time it was from the state's Missing Persons Bureau.

Detective Reeves put the call on speaker.

"We've identified something."

"What is it?"

"Three of the children's names from those files match open missing-person investigations."

The ballroom exploded into chaos.

Guests gasped.

Several stepped backward in horror.

Daniel couldn't believe what he was hearing.

"Missing children?"

"Yes."

"Are you saying..."

"We don't know the connection yet."

"But this is no longer just a child abuse investigation."

"It has become a major criminal case."

Vivian finally lost her composure.

"This is absurd!"

"You're building fantasies from paperwork!"

She pointed toward Lily.

"She's lying!"

Then toward Amelia.

"And she destroyed my family!"

Amelia stood slowly, still holding Lily's hand.

"No."

Her voice was calm.

"The truth did."

At that exact moment, one of the hotel staff hurried breathlessly into the ballroom.

"Detective!"

"What is it?"

"A man just arrived."

"What man?"

"He refuses to give his name."

"He says..."

The employee swallowed nervously.

"...he's here to take Lily home."

Detective Reeves immediately reached for his weapon.

"Where is he now?"

"In the hotel lobby."

"And he told us one more thing."

"What?"

The employee looked around the silent ballroom before answering.

"He said..."

"'Tell Vivian Crawford that ghosts don't stay buried forever.'"

Vivian's face drained of every trace of color.

Her knees nearly gave way.

Because only one person had ever said those exact words to her.

Jonathan Hayes.
