Chapter 14 - THE FINAL BETRAYAL
The city went into lockdown.
Police surrounded the buildings connected to Samuel.
Daniel knew it wasn't enough.
Samuel had planted explosives.
Nobody knew where.
Vanessa stepped forward.
“I can get him.”
Daniel looked at her.
“How?”
“He trusts me.”
“You're sure?”
“Yes.”
Grace grabbed Vanessa's arm.
“If you betray us…”
Vanessa looked at her.
“I won't.”
Daniel nodded.
The plan was simple.
Vanessa would meet Samuel.
She would convince him the trust was still hidden.
Daniel would track the conversation.
They met in an abandoned hotel.
Samuel stood beside the window.
“You came alone.”
“Yes.”
“Where's Daniel?”
“Dead.”
Samuel turned.
“What?”
“He died this morning.”
Samuel smiled.
“Prove it.”
Vanessa held up Daniel's watch.
Samuel stared.
“Where did you get that?”
“From his body.”
Samuel relaxed.
“You finally did it.”
Vanessa nodded.
“Yes.”
Samuel walked closer.
“And Grace?”
“Gone.”
He smiled.
“Excellent.”
Vanessa looked at him.
“Now release the city.”
Samuel laughed.
“You think this ends because Daniel is dead?”
Vanessa's eyes hardened.
“No.”
She pulled out a gun.
“It ends because you're going to confess.”
Samuel froze.
Hidden microphones captured everything.
“You stupid girl.”
“You killed my mother.”
“No.”
“You threatened her.”
“I protected her.”
“You murdered Daniel's father.”
“I protected the organization.”
“You killed Thomas Parker.”
Samuel's expression changed.
“You don't understand what he knew.”
Vanessa stepped closer.
“I understand enough.”
Samuel lunged.
They fought.
The gun fell.
Daniel entered with police.
“Samuel Cross!”
Samuel froze.
He looked at Daniel.
“You're alive.”
Daniel smiled.
“Disappointed?”
Samuel's face twisted.
“You think this is over?”
Daniel shook his head.
“No.”
He held up the evidence box.
“It ends with you.”
Samuel laughed.
“You have no idea who you're fighting.”
Daniel looked at him.
“I know.”
Samuel was arrested.
Richard testified.
Evelyn testified.
Vanessa confessed.
The evidence exposed the entire network.
The missing millions were recovered.
Whitfield Development survived.
But Daniel had one more problem.
The trust.
The board wanted to know who would control the company.
Daniel stood before them.
“I will.”
Then he looked at Grace.
“And she will.”
Grace shook her head.
“I don't want your company.”
“You don't have to.”
He smiled.
“You have something more important.”
“What?”
“Your freedom.”
Daniel transferred a portion of the recovered assets into a foundation under Grace's name.
She could use it for families harmed by the people who had stolen their money.
Grace cried.
“You don't owe me this.”
Daniel smiled.
“Yes, I do.”
She looked at him.
“Why?”
“Because you're my sister.”
The room became silent.
Then Lily ran into Daniel's arms.
“Uncle Daniel!”
He laughed.
For the first time in months, he felt peace.
But peace didn't last.
That night, Daniel received one final envelope.
No sender.
Inside was a photograph.
His father.
Standing beside a young woman.
Daniel recognized the woman.
Vanessa.
But the date was twenty years earlier.
On the back were five words.
Your father knew she survived.
Daniel stared.
His father had lied about one final thing.
His mother.
