Chapter 16 - The Woman Behind the Lawsuit

Three days later, Laney left the hospital.

There were no photographers at the private exit.

Asher made sure of that.

He carried Elias.

Laney carried Amara.

Malik insisted on walking despite his stitches.

For the first time in seven months, all five entered the same home.

Not the Lennox penthouse.

Laney refused.

Too many cameras.

Too many memories.

Instead, Asher rented a quiet brownstone in Brooklyn under a private trust.

Nothing about it looked like the home of a billionaire.

That was why he loved it.

Malik chose the bedroom with the smallest closet because the window faced a playground.

The twins shared a nursery.

Laney stood in the kitchen that first evening and stared at Asher.

“You don’t know how to use that stove.”

“I own restaurants.”

“You do not cook in them.”

“Minor distinction.”

He burned pasta.

Malik ate it anyway.

For four days, life became almost ordinary.

Then someone knocked on the door.

Daniel checked the camera.

A woman stood outside holding legal papers.

Forty.

Elegant.

Dark hair.

Asher did not recognize her.

Daniel opened the door slightly.

“Can I help you?”

“I’m looking for Asher Lennox.”

“Who are you?”

“My name is Celeste Morgan.”

Asher stepped closer.

The name meant nothing.

Then she said, “I’m Richard Lennox’s daughter.”

Silence.

Asher laughed.

Because at this point, there was no other reaction.

“Of course you are.”

Celeste did not smile.

“I have DNA proof.”

Laney appeared behind him.

“What does she want?”

Celeste held up the papers.

“To stop Asher from destroying my father’s company.”

Asher’s expression hardened.

“You filed a lawsuit.”

“Yes.”

“Against me?”

“Against the estate, the trust, the board, Vivienne, Charles, and you.”

Nathan, on speakerphone from headquarters, groaned.

“I knew today was too quiet.”

Celeste entered only after Daniel searched her bag.

She sat at the kitchen table.

No one offered coffee.

Asher studied her face.

There was something of Richard in the eyes.

“How old are you?”

“Thirty-eight.”

Asher stared.

“You’re twelve years younger than me.”

“Yes.”

“Who is your mother?”

“Dr. Margaret Morgan.”

He knew the name.

Richard’s former research director.

“She died fifteen years ago.”

“Yes.”

“Did Father know about you?”

Celeste laughed bitterly.

“He paid for my entire life.”

That hurt.

Richard had been alive.

He had another child.

He had supported her while Asher mourned him.

“Did he see you?”

“Occasionally.”

“As your father?”

“No.”

“That sounds like him.”

Celeste’s expression softened for one second.

“He loved you.”

“Apparently he loved everyone from a distance.”

Laney placed Amara in a bassinet.

“Why sue now?”

Celeste looked at Asher.

“Because Thomas wasn’t the only danger.”

Asher’s stomach tightened.

“Who else?”

“The government.”

Nathan’s voice came through the phone.

“That sounds encouraging.”

Celeste ignored him.

“Richard’s archive contains classified and illegally collected information.”

“We know.”

“If released carelessly, people could be hurt.”

“So you want it hidden.”

“I want it reviewed.”

“By whom?”

“A federal special counsel.”

Asher laughed.

“Thomas allegedly infiltrated federal agencies.”

“Some. Not all.”

“You trust the government?”

“I work for it.”

Daniel’s posture changed.

“What agency?”

Celeste reached for identification.

“Department of Justice.”

Daniel examined it.

Real.

Asher looked at her.

“You’re a federal prosecutor.”

“Former prosecutor. Current special investigations counsel.”

Nathan whispered through the phone.

“This family needs a spreadsheet.”

Celeste continued.

“I have spent six years investigating Meridian.”

Asher stared.

“You knew Thomas?”

“Not personally.”

“Did you know Richard was alive?”

“Yes.”

“Wonderful.”

She looked almost ashamed.

“He recruited me.”

“Everyone knew except me.”

“That was deliberate.”

“Stop defending it.”

“I’m not.”

Celeste looked at Laney.

“Your discovery accelerated everything.”

Laney nodded.

“I’m getting used to hearing that.”

Celeste continued.

“Thomas will not be the final arrest.”

“How many people?”

“Potentially dozens.”

“And Lennox Global?”

“Multiple executives are implicated.”

Nathan groaned again.

“As current CEO, this is fantastic news.”

Celeste glanced at the phone.

“You’re Nathan Cole?”

“Against my will.”

She almost smiled.

Then handed Asher the lawsuit.

“I filed to freeze destruction of corporate records.”

“You said I was destroying the company.”

“Legal language.”

“You told reporters I was reckless.”

“I needed an emergency hearing.”

Asher stared.

“You weaponized the media.”

“Yes.”

Laney laughed softly.

“She might actually be related to you.”

Asher ignored that.

“What do you need from me?”

“The Cipher.”

“No.”

“Without it, we cannot open Richard’s archive.”

“No.”

Celeste leaned forward.

“Thomas will not remain silent.”

“Good.”

“He has information on you.”

“Let him talk.”

“On Laney.”

Asher’s expression changed.

“What information?”

Celeste looked at Laney.

“Before she married you, she worked for a nonprofit called Harbor House.”

Laney frowned.

“Yes.”

“Thomas claims Harbor House received illegal Lennox funds.”

“That’s impossible.”

“He has records.”

Laney looked at Asher.

“I handled community outreach. I never managed donations.”

Celeste nodded.

“I believe you.”

Asher asked, “Why bring it up?”

“Because Thomas is building a defense that Laney was part of the financial network long before your marriage.”

Laney went pale.

“He’s framing me.”

“Yes.”

“And if people believe it…”

Charles, arriving behind Celeste, completed the thought.

“The custody narrative becomes dangerous again.”

Laney looked toward her children.

Asher stood.

“Enough.”

Celeste looked at him.

“Exactly. Which is why we need evidence.”

He stared at the lawsuit.

Then at Richard’s ring on his hand.

He had started wearing it that morning.

Not as an heir.

As a reminder.

Family first.

“You can review the archive.”

Celeste nodded.

“But it happens on my terms.”

“What terms?”

“Laney’s name is cleared publicly before any material unrelated to criminal activity gets disclosed.”

“If evidence clears her, yes.”

“And the children stay completely out of every filing.”

“Yes.”

“And Lennox Global cooperates fully.”

Nathan’s voice came through.

“I would like to register mild concern.”

Asher smiled.

“Denied.”

Nathan sighed.

Celeste extended her hand.

Asher shook it.

For the first time, brother and sister met not as family.

As allies.

Then Malik entered carrying a drawing.

“Dad?”

“Yes?”

“Who’s she?”

Asher looked at Celeste.

He had no idea what to call her.

Celeste smiled gently.

“I’m your aunt.”

Malik considered this.

“Another one?”

Everyone laughed.

The tension broke.

Then Celeste’s phone rang.

She answered.

Her expression changed.

“What?”

Silence.

“When?”

She stood.

“Lock this house down.”

Asher’s pulse quickened.

“What happened?”

May you like

Celeste looked at him.

“Thomas Vale escaped federal custody.”
