Chapter 13 - Forty-Eight Hours

By noon, the story was everywhere.

Billionaire CEO Removed After Family Emergency.

Missing Ex-Wife Secretly Gives Birth to Twins.

Lennox Global Board Questions Chairman’s Fitness.

Social media filled the gaps with rumors.

Asher had attacked a doctor.

Laney had been living under another name.

The twins belonged to a mystery billionaire.

Malik had been seriously injured.

Almost none of it was true.

But truth moved slower than scandal.

Asher refused to respond publicly.

That confused Nathan.

“You built half your reputation controlling the narrative.”

“I’m finished performing for strangers.”

“Investors aren’t strangers.”

“They are when my children are involved.”

Nathan nodded.

“Fair.”

They established a command center inside an unused executive apartment owned by Vivienne.

Laney and the children remained under hospital observation.

Asher visited every few hours.

The DNA results arrived that afternoon.

Two separate laboratories.

Same conclusion.

Malik was Asher’s biological son.

Amara and Elias were Asher’s biological children.

Laney cried when she read it.

Asher did too.

Quietly.

Away from everyone.

Not because he had truly doubted Malik.

Because after twenty-four hours of lies, something in his life had finally been proven real.

He returned to the command center.

Daniel had mapped Thomas’s known movements.

Nathan had opened internal Lennox systems.

Charles reviewed Henry’s dormant trust.

Vivienne sat alone near the window.

She had been silent for nearly an hour.

Asher approached.

“You knew Thomas before he worked for Father.”

She nodded.

“How?”

“He was my driver.”

Asher stared.

“When?”

“When I was twenty-three.”

“Before you married Richard?”

“Yes.”

“Did you know he was Henry’s son?”

“No.”

“Did you have a relationship with him?”

Vivienne looked at him sharply.

“No.”

He believed her.

“He introduced me to Richard.”

That surprised Asher.

“Thomas introduced you?”

“Yes.”

Vivienne laughed sadly.

“I thought he changed my life.”

“He did.”

“Yes.”

Just not in the way she had believed.

Nathan called them over.

“I found something.”

He displayed corporate records on a large screen.

“Meridian Data Systems was incorporated eighteen years ago.”

Asher nodded.

“I know.”

“But its original investor was a Cayman entity called G.V. Holdings.”

Daniel looked up.

“Gabriel Vale?”

“Or…”

Asher finished.

“Thomas Vale.”

Nathan nodded.

“The acquisition was pushed by three people.”

“I know you were one.”

“Yes. But I wasn’t first.”

“Who?”

Nathan displayed an email.

Recommendation came from Martin Dale.

The foundation CFO Laney had confronted.

Daniel frowned.

“Where is Dale now?”

Nathan stared.

“He resigned yesterday.”

Asher’s stomach dropped.

“Find him.”

Daniel made a call.

Ten minutes later, they had an answer.

Martin Dale’s house was empty.

His accounts had been drained.

A private plane registered to one of his companies departed New Jersey at dawn.

Destination unknown.

Nathan sighed.

“Thomas had inside help.”

Laney arrived unexpectedly that evening.

Asher stood.

“What are you doing here?”

“Walking.”

“You gave birth yesterday.”

“I noticed.”

“Laney.”

“Do not start ordering me around again.”

Despite everything, Nathan smiled.

“I missed you.”

She hugged him.

“Congratulations on stealing my husband’s company.”

Nathan grimaced.

“Temporary theft.”

Asher caught the word husband.

So did Laney.

Neither corrected it.

She placed a folder on the table.

“I remembered something.”

“What?”

“When Vivienne moved me into hiding, she gave me emergency cash.”

Vivienne frowned.

“Yes.”

“The bills were new. Bound from a private bank.”

“So?”

“I kept one band.”

She handed Daniel a paper currency wrapper.

Printed code.

Daniel scanned it.

Nathan pulled up transaction records.

The cash came from a trust account.

GV Holdings.

Everyone went still.

Vivienne stared.

“No.”

Asher looked at her.

“You were funded by Thomas.”

“I didn’t know.”

“He financed Laney’s disappearance.”

Vivienne covered her mouth.

The full manipulation became clear.

Thomas had convinced Vivienne to hide Laney.

Thomas had planted evidence.

Thomas had sent Laney records.

Thomas had used every person’s fear against the others.

Then Charles said, “The forty-eight-hour deadline.”

Everyone looked at him.

“The message said return what your father stole.”

Asher nodded.

“What did Richard steal?”

Charles looked toward the black case.

“Not the archive.”

“What else?”

“The succession key.”

Vivienne frowned.

“What key?”

Charles opened Henry’s dormant trust documents.

“The original trust contains a provision.”

He read.

“If competing biological heirs exist, controlling rights transfer only when the Founder’s Cipher is presented with verified lineage.”

Nathan stared.

“The Founder’s Cipher?”

Asher laughed.

“My family loves ridiculous names.”

Charles continued.

“It sounds like a physical encryption device.”

Laney looked at the items from Richard’s box.

“We didn’t find one.”

Asher remembered.

“The brass key.”

Thomas had given it to them.

But the key only opened the Grand Central box.

Or had it?

Daniel examined it closely.

Inside the key’s hollow stem was a tiny object.

A microchip.

Nathan stared.

“There.”

Asher lifted it carefully.

“The Founder’s Cipher.”

Charles nodded.

“If Thomas gets this plus genetic proof, he can challenge control of the dormant trust.”

“How much control?”

Charles looked at the numbers.

“Enough voting power to destabilize Lennox Global.”

Nathan leaned back.

“So this entire mess is partly a hostile takeover.”

Laney shook her head.

“No.”

Everyone looked at her.

“Thomas has had decades to fight for company shares. He could have sued.”

Asher nodded.

“She’s right.”

“What does he really want?”

Daniel looked at the microchip.

“The archive.”

The chip likely unlocked Richard’s evidence.

Asher suddenly understood the deadline.

Thomas was not asking for money.

He wanted them to hand over the only device that could expose him.

“Then we don’t give it to him.”

Nathan nodded.

“Agreed.”

Asher looked at the clock.

Thirty-seven hours remaining.

“No.”

Everyone stared.

“We give him exactly what he wants.”

Vivienne frowned.

“That is insane.”

“We need Thomas where we can see him.”

Daniel understood.

“Set a meeting.”

Asher nodded.

“With the real Cipher?”

“A copy.”

Nathan smiled faintly.

“Now you sound like a CEO again.”

Asher looked at him.

“You are CEO.”

“Please stop reminding me.”

They built the trap.

A cloned device.

Federal contacts Daniel trusted.

Independent journalists holding encrypted copies of Richard’s video.

If Asher failed to check in by a specific time, the evidence would release automatically.

For the first time, Thomas would not control the exits.

At midnight, Asher sent one message to the number that had contacted him.

I HAVE WHAT YOU WANT.

The reply came thirty seconds later.

COME ALONE.

Location followed.

Hawthorne University.

The abandoned shell of Hawthorne Hall.

May you like

Asher stared at the address.

Twenty years after the first fire, Thomas wanted him back where everything began.
