CHAPTER 3 — The Truth They Buried

The room fell into suffocating silence.
Emily stared at Daniel as if she were looking at a stranger.
Psychiatric detention?
Three years?
No.
That couldn’t be real.
She shook her head.
“What is he talking about?”
Daniel’s lips parted, but no sound came out.
Robert’s smile widened.
He enjoyed this.
Every second of it.
He thrived on control.
On fear.
On watching people break.
Emily turned to him, fury burning through her shock.
“You’re lying.”
Robert gave a soft laugh.
“I rarely need to lie.”
Lena suddenly screamed.
“STOP IT!”
Everyone froze.
Tears streamed down Lena’s face as she glared at her father.
“Leave him alone!”
Robert’s eyes slowly moved toward her.
Cold.
Sharp.
Dangerous.
And instantly, Lena shrank.
Like years of conditioning had taken over.
Her body trembled violently.
Emily saw it.
This wasn’t normal fear.
This was trauma carved into muscle memory.
Robert stepped closer.
“You always were emotional.”
Daniel stepped between them.
“Stay away from her.”
Robert sighed.
“Still pretending to be a protector?”
Daniel raised the gun higher.
“I said stay away.”
Robert stared at him.
No fear.
Not even a little.
Instead, amusement.
“You still don’t understand, do you?”
Daniel’s jaw tightened.
Robert looked toward Emily.
“Your husband was committed at nineteen.”
Emily’s heart pounded.
“No…”
Robert continued.
“Violent behavior. Delusions. Paranoia.”
Emily whispered.
“Daniel…”
Daniel shook his head desperately.
“Don’t listen to him.”
Robert spoke over him.
“He attacked hospital staff.”
Emily stepped backward.
Her mind spun.
This didn’t fit the man she knew.
Kind.
Gentle.
Protective.
But then…
How much had she really known?
Robert pulled another document from the folder.
Medical papers.
Official stamps.
Doctor signatures.
Everything looked real.
Emily’s hands shook.
“No…”
Robert calmly handed the papers to her.
She read the first line.
Patient: Daniel Hayes
Diagnosis: Severe psychotic instability with violent tendencies
Her breathing stopped.
She looked up.
Daniel’s eyes were full of pain.
“Emily, please—”
“Tell me the truth!”
Her voice cracked.
Daniel froze.
The hurt in her eyes hit harder than anything.
Not anger.
Not disgust.
Fear.
Fear of him.
And that shattered him.
Robert smiled.
Perfect.
Exactly what he wanted.
Daniel slowly lowered the gun.
His shoulders shook.
Then finally—
He spoke.
“Yes.”
Emily stopped breathing.
“Yes?”
Tears fell from his eyes.
“I was institutionalized.”
The words hit like a bomb.
Emily staggered.
Robert smiled wider.
Lena whispered—
“No…”
Emily felt sick.
“You lied again…”
Daniel’s voice broke.
“I tried to tell you.”
“When?!”
“So many times.”
His tears fell faster.
“But every time I opened my mouth…”
He looked at Robert.
“…I heard his voice.”
Robert folded his hands calmly.
“Because you know no one believes madmen.”
Daniel snapped.
“I WAS NEVER CRAZY!”
The roar shook the room.
Emily flinched.
Daniel froze.
The realization crushed him.
She flinched.
From him.
Robert saw it.
And loved it.
“There it is,” Robert said softly. “The violence.”
Daniel trembled with rage.
Lena shouted through tears.
“He’s lying!”
Emily turned to her.
Lena crawled off the bed, clutching the blanket.
“He made them do it!”
Robert’s expression darkened.
“Careful.”
But Lena kept going.
“No!”
Years of silence exploded.
“You drugged Daniel!”
Emily froze.
Robert’s eyes sharpened.
Lena sobbed.
“You told everyone he was unstable because he tried to protect me!”
Emily’s heartbeat thundered.
What?
Daniel shut his eyes.
Like he had relived this nightmare a thousand times.
Lena pointed at Robert with a shaking hand.
“When Daniel was nineteen, he fought back.”
Her voice cracked.
“He saw Father hurting me.”
Robert’s face became stone.
Lena continued.
“Daniel attacked him.”
Emily stared.
No one spoke.
Lena sobbed harder.
“He almost killed him.”
Daniel whispered—
“I should have.”
Robert’s eyes flashed with cold fury.
There it was.
The mask cracked.
Just for a second.
Monster.
Emily saw it.
Not polished judge.
Not respected public figure.
Monster.
Lena continued.
“After that… Father told everyone Daniel snapped.”
She wiped tears.
“He bribed doctors.”
Emily looked down at the papers again.
Her hands shook.
Fake.
All of it.
Or manipulated.
Robert said calmly,
“No one bribed anyone.”
Lena screamed.
“LIAR!”
Robert’s voice turned icy.
“You were always weak, Lena.”
She flinched.
Daniel moved in front of her.
“No.”
Robert ignored him.
“You both inherited your mother’s fragility.”
Daniel’s rage exploded.
“DON’T TALK ABOUT MOM!”
Robert smiled again.
“There he is.”
Emily finally understood.
Every word.
Every sentence.
Calculated.
Robert wasn’t trying to win physically.
He was provoking Daniel.
Pushing him.
Manipulating him into losing control.
Because if Daniel attacked—
Robert would win.
Emily’s mind sharpened.
That was it.
That was his plan.
Make Daniel snap.
Use the gun.
Frame him.
Destroy him.
She suddenly remembered something.
Daniel’s company.
Bank accounts.
Fake divorce papers.
This man prepared everything.
This wasn’t emotional.
This was strategic.
Then Emily noticed something.
Robert’s jacket.
A tiny blinking light.
Her eyes widened.
Camera?
No.
Microphone.
Recording device.
Her blood ran cold.
He was recording everything.
She looked around.
Then saw another detail.
A small black object clipped under his collar.
Body cam.
He came prepared.
He wanted evidence.
Emily acted instantly.
“Daniel!”
He looked at her.
“Don’t move.”
Robert smiled.
“Good advice.”
Emily pointed.
“His collar.”
Daniel frowned.
Robert’s expression changed.
First time.
A crack.
Daniel looked carefully.
Then saw it.
The device.
His face darkened.
“You’re recording?”
Robert remained calm.
“For my safety.”
Emily laughed bitterly.
“No.”
Robert looked at her.
She stepped forward.
“For blackmail.”
Robert’s eyes narrowed.
Smart girl.
He had underestimated her.
Emily continued.
“You came here hoping Daniel would attack.”
Silence.
Robert didn’t answer.
She kept going.
“You provoke him. He fires. Self-defense.”
Daniel’s breathing slowed.
Understanding hit him.
Emily pointed at Robert.
“You planned this.”
Robert’s smile vanished.
And in that moment—
Emily knew she was right.
Lena whispered,
“Oh my God…”
Robert spoke quietly.
“You’re intelligent.”
Emily stared back.
“No. You’re predictable.”
For the first time—
He looked annoyed.
Real annoyance.
Emily took Daniel’s hand.
“Lower the gun.”
Daniel hesitated.
Robert watched carefully.
Emily squeezed harder.
“Trust me.”
Slowly—
Daniel lowered the weapon.
Robert’s eyes flashed.
Plan A failed.
Emily saw it.
Good.
She continued.
“You want violence.”
She stepped in front of Daniel.
“You won’t get it.”
Robert stared.
Then—
He smiled again.
But darker now.
Crueler.
“You think you’ve won?”
Emily held firm.
“No.”
Robert reached into his pocket.
Daniel raised the gun halfway again.
Robert pulled out his phone.
Tapped once.
Emily’s phone buzzed.
Then Daniel’s.
Then Lena’s.
Message received.
Emily looked down.
A video file.
Unknown sender.
Her blood chilled.
She pressed play.
The screen showed…
Security footage.
Their bedroom.
From ten minutes ago.
Audio included.
Every word recorded.
Emily’s face drained.
There were cameras.
Inside the house.
No.
No…
Robert said softly—
“You really should check your own home.”
Daniel went pale.
Emily whispered—
“How…”
Robert smiled.
“I told you.”
He leaned closer.
“I own everything.”
Then he delivered the next blow.
“Even people inside your house.”
Emily’s skin turned cold.
Inside the house?
Her mind raced.
Housekeeper?
Assistant?
Security?
Someone betrayed them.
Someone close.
Then—
A sound came from downstairs.
A floorboard creaked.
Not Robert.
Someone else.
Everyone froze.
Robert smiled slowly.
And said four terrifying words—
“They’re here for her.”
Lena screamed.
Heavy footsteps thundered upstairs.
Not one person.
Several.
Daniel raised the gun.
Emily’s heart stopped.
The bedroom door burst open.
May you like
And three men stormed inside.
To be continued…
