CHAPTER 2 — The Man at the Door

The front door handle twisted again.

Once.

Twice.

Then stopped.

Silence.

No one moved.

No one even breathed.

Emily’s heart hammered so violently she thought it might burst through her chest.

Downstairs, the voice returned.

Calm.

Controlled.

Terrifying.

“Daniel, don’t make this harder than it needs to be.”

Lena curled into herself, shaking uncontrollably.

“He always sounds like that,” she whispered. “Quiet. Calm. Like nothing is wrong.”

Daniel clenched his fists.

“But when the door closes…” Lena continued, tears streaming down her face, “he becomes a monster.”

Emily looked at her husband.

Daniel’s entire body had gone rigid.

The old fear inside him was alive again.

Not the confident businessman she knew.

Not the strong, composed man who solved every problem.

Right now, he looked like a frightened boy.

A child trapped in old trauma.

The knocking came again.

Three hard strikes.

BANG.

BANG.

BANG.

“Open the door.”

Emily forced herself to think.

Panic wouldn’t help.

Fear wouldn’t save them.

Action would.

She grabbed her phone.

“We call someone.”

Daniel stopped her.

“No.”

She stared at him.

“No?”

“He’ll know.”

Emily nearly snapped.

“He already knows she’s here!”

Daniel shook his head.

“You don’t understand him.”

“Then help me understand!”

Daniel’s jaw tightened.

“He doesn’t attack when witnesses are present.”

Emily frowned.

“What does that mean?”

“He wants privacy.”

The words made her skin crawl.

Daniel continued.

“If we stall him… he may leave.”

Downstairs, something heavy hit the door.

Lena screamed.

Emily froze.

The wood shook.

“He won’t leave,” Lena whispered. “Not tonight.”

Then—

A voice from outside.

“Lena.”

She stopped breathing.

His tone changed.

Softer now.

Almost fatherly.

The kind of voice strangers would trust.

The kind of voice evil men perfected.

“Sweetheart, come home.”

Emily felt nauseous.

“No one will hurt you.”

Lena broke down.

“That’s what he says before—”

She couldn’t finish.

Daniel moved toward the bedroom closet.

Emily frowned.

“What are you doing?”

He opened a hidden safe.

She blinked.

She had never seen it before.

Inside—

Documents.

Cash.

And a handgun.

Emily’s blood ran cold.

“Daniel.”

He picked up the gun.

“I hoped I’d never need this.”

She stared.

“You own a gun?”

He loaded it.

“For him.”

Emily stepped back.

This night kept getting worse.

“How long have you planned for this?”

Daniel answered without looking at her.

“Since the day we got married.”

The words hit harder than anything else.

Emily felt her chest tighten.

“All these years…”

“Yes.”

“You expected him to come?”

Daniel looked at her.

“No.”

His voice broke.

“I feared he would.”

Emily suddenly understood something horrifying.

Daniel hadn’t lied because he didn’t trust her.

He lied because he thought secrets protected her.

He had built an entire life trying to keep darkness away from her.

But darkness had followed anyway.

BANG!

The front door shook violently.

Wood cracked.

Lena screamed again.

“He’s coming in!”

Daniel moved toward the stairs.

Emily grabbed his wrist.

“No.”

His eyes met hers.

“If I don’t stop him, he’ll take her.”

Emily’s voice shook.

“If you go down there with that gun, everything changes.”

“It already changed.”

She stepped in front of him.

“No.”

“Emily—”

“No.”

She stared directly into his eyes.

“You are not facing him alone again.”

Something in Daniel broke.

Years of pain surfaced.

“I left her,” he whispered.

Tears filled his eyes.

“I left my little sister behind.”

Emily softened.

“He made me believe I was weak.”

His breathing turned ragged.

“He told me every day that I was a coward.”

Another crash downstairs.

The door splintered.

Emily heard wood breaking.

He was inside.

Daniel’s voice cracked.

“And maybe he was right.”

Emily grabbed his face with both hands.

“Look at me.”

He did.

“You were a child.”

Tears fell down his cheeks.

“You hear me?” Emily said. “A child.”

“But she suffered because of me—”

“No.”

Emily’s voice sharpened.

“He did that. Not you.”

Daniel shook.

“He broke both of you.”

She pressed her forehead to his.

“But he doesn’t own you anymore.”

Downstairs.

Footsteps.

Slow.

Measured.

Walking through their home.

Like he belonged there.

Emily’s blood turned cold.

He was inside.

Lena whimpered.

“No… no…”

Then—

His voice echoed from downstairs.

“I’m impressed.”

Footsteps climbed the stairs.

One step.

Pause.

Another.

Pause.

Slow.

Deliberate.

Psychological torture.

Emily understood.

He wanted fear to grow.

He wanted them frozen.

He enjoyed this.

Daniel raised the gun.

His hands shook.

Emily placed her hand over his.

“Steady.”

Step.

Step.

Step.

Closer.

Closer.

Closer.

The shadow appeared under the bedroom door.

Lena buried herself behind the bed.

Daniel aimed.

The handle turned.

Click.

The door opened.

And there he stood.

Judge Robert Hayes.

Tall.

Gray-haired.

Perfectly dressed.

Expensive suit.

Polished shoes.

No visible anger.

No rage.

Just calm.

Cold calm.

His eyes scanned the room.

First Daniel.

Then the gun.

Then Emily.

Finally Lena.

He smiled.

Emily felt terror unlike anything she’d known.

Because monsters weren’t always loud.

Sometimes they smiled.

“Daniel,” Robert said pleasantly.

“Father,” Daniel replied.

Robert’s gaze shifted to Emily.

“You must be my daughter-in-law.”

Emily said nothing.

Robert gave a small nod.

“Beautiful home.”

Daniel tightened his grip.

“Leave.”

Robert ignored him.

Instead, he looked at Lena.

“Come here.”

Lena shook violently.

“No…”

Robert sighed.

“Lena, you embarrassed me tonight.”

Emily’s rage rose.

Embarrassed?

That was his concern?

Robert continued calmly.

“Do you know how worried I was?”

Lena cried harder.

Daniel stepped forward.

“She’s not going anywhere.”

Robert’s smile vanished.

The temperature in the room seemed to drop.

“I wasn’t speaking to you.”

Daniel aimed higher.

“She stays.”

Robert finally looked at the gun.

Then—

He laughed.

Actually laughed.

Emily felt chills.

“You still think weapons create strength?”

Daniel’s face darkened.

“They level the field.”

Robert tilted his head.

“No.”

His eyes sharpened.

“They expose weakness.”

Then Robert reached into his jacket.

Daniel shouted.

“DON’T MOVE!”

Emily’s heart stopped.

Robert slowly pulled out…

A folder.

Not a weapon.

Documents.

He tossed them onto the bed.

The papers slid toward Emily.

She looked down.

And froze.

Divorce papers.

Her name.

Daniel’s name.

Her signature.

Her blood turned to ice.

“What is this?”

Robert smiled again.

“Proof.”

Emily stared.

“This is fake.”

Robert looked pleased.

“Is it?”

She read the signature again.

It looked exactly like hers.

Exactly.

Impossible.

Daniel’s face changed.

“What did you do?”

Robert’s voice turned silky.

“I merely prepared for possibilities.”

Emily shook.

“I never signed this.”

Robert looked at her.

“No.”

A pause.

“But your bank did.”

Emily froze.

Bank?

Robert continued.

“Your joint accounts are frozen.”

Daniel went pale.

“No…”

“The company shares?” Robert said. “Transferred.”

Daniel staggered back.

Emily’s stomach dropped.

No.

No way.

Robert smiled.

“You built a wonderful life, son.”

His gaze turned cruel.

“So I bought it.”

Daniel’s breathing became uneven.

Emily whispered.

“How?”

Robert looked at her with satisfaction.

“Because someone inside your company works for me.”

Daniel’s face lost all color.

Betrayal.

Someone close.

Someone trusted.

Robert stepped forward.

“And unless Lena comes home willingly…”

He paused.

Everything stopped.

Then he delivered the final blow.

“I release everything tomorrow.”

Emily frowned.

“Everything?”

Robert’s smile widened.

“Medical records.”

Lena stopped crying.

Daniel stiffened.

“What records?”

Robert looked at Emily.

The smile became monstrous.

“You don’t know?”

Emily slowly turned toward Daniel.

Daniel looked shattered.

Lena whispered—

“No…”

Robert’s voice cut through the silence.

“Ask your husband why he spent three years in psychiatric detention.”

Emily’s breath caught.

She stared at Daniel.

No.

No.

There was more.

Even more.

“What… is he talking about?”

Daniel couldn’t speak.

Robert smiled.

Because he knew.

He had done it again.

He had detonated another secret.

And this one—

May you like

Might destroy Emily’s marriage for real.

To be continued…
