Chapter 5 - THE ALLIANCE NOBODY EXPECTED

Agent Lena Ortiz had arrested men like Adrian Cole.
She had interviewed men like Adrian Cole.
She had spent fifteen years listening to men like Adrian explain why laws were flexible when power was involved.
She had never expected one to walk voluntarily into the FBI’s New York field office.
Adrian arrived at 6:12 a.m.
Luca beside him.
No lawyer.
That interested her.
Ortiz entered the interview room.
Adrian stood.
“Where is Claire?”
“Sit down.”
“Is she safe?”
“Sit.”
Adrian remained standing.
Ortiz placed a folder on the table.
“If I tell you anything about a protected witness, I compromise her security.”
“So she is a protected witness.”
Ortiz smiled faintly.
“You’re less clever than you think.”
Adrian finally sat.
“Patrick O’Donnell has been kidnapped.”
“We know.”
“Miles contacted Claire.”
“We know.”
Adrian leaned forward.
“He contacted me too.”
Ortiz’s expression changed.
“What did he say?”
“I want Claire protected.”
“She is.”
“No. She isn’t. If Miles reached her private number, your system is compromised.”
Ortiz said nothing.
Adrian saw the answer.
“He did reach her.”
“What are you offering?”
“Everything I know about Miles.”
“In exchange?”
“Patrick alive. Claire protected.”
“And you?”
“Nothing.”
Ortiz stared.
Adrian almost smiled.
“You were expecting immunity.”
“I was expecting a criminal to behave like a criminal.”
“I am.”
He leaned back.
“I’m protecting what belongs to me.”
Ortiz’s face hardened.
“Claire does not belong to you.”
Adrian stopped.
For years, nobody corrected his language.
Nobody except Claire.
He looked down.
“You’re right.”
Ortiz had not expected that either.
Adrian slid a phone across the table.
“Miles called from this number.”
“We’ll need the device.”
“Take it.”
“Password?”
Adrian gave it.
Ortiz opened the phone.
Messages.
Contacts.
Internal communications.
More than she expected.
“You understand this may be evidence against you.”
“Yes.”
“Your attorney would tell you to stop talking.”
“I know.”
“Why isn’t your attorney here?”
“Because Miles has Patrick.”
Ortiz studied him.
“And because Claire has Atlas?”
Adrian’s expression changed almost invisibly.
So they definitely had it.
Ortiz saw the realization.
Adrian nodded.
“And because Claire has Atlas.”
“You know what’s on it?”
“Enough.”
“You know it implicates you.”
“Yes.”
Still no bargaining.
Ortiz closed the phone.
“What does Miles want with Atlas?”
“Control.”
“Explain.”
“Atlas isn’t just records. It contains emergency authentication certificates for several holding companies and backup systems.”
“He can move money with it?”
“Not without secondary credentials.”
“Whose?”
“Mine.”
“Then why take it?”
“Because Atlas contains archival communications. Transactions. Internal authorizations.”
“Evidence.”
“Yes.”
“Evidence of his betrayal.”
“And mine.”
Ortiz watched him carefully.
“You’re remarkably calm about prison.”
“I’m not calm.”
“What are you?”
Adrian looked through the glass wall.
“Late.”
For the first time, Ortiz saw something besides arrogance.
Regret.
She did not mistake it for innocence.
But regret could be useful.
They made a deal.
Not immunity.
Not forgiveness.
Operational cooperation.
Adrian would help identify properties, personnel and communication patterns Miles could use.
Federal authorities would attempt to recover Patrick.
Claire’s location would remain secret.
Adrian did not ask again.
That earned him one small measure of Ortiz’s respect.
At the Vermont house, Claire learned nothing about Adrian’s visit.
Ortiz intentionally kept it that way.
Instead, she delivered the instructions Miles had sent.
A photograph.
Patrick tied to a chair.
Bruised.
Alive.
Claire covered her mouth.
Beneath the photograph were four words.
Atlas for the old man.
Claire looked at Ortiz.
“We’re doing it.”
“We’re considering a controlled exchange.”
“No. We’re doing it.”
“Claire—”
“He helped me.”
“I understand.”
“He could have told Adrian about Boston. He didn’t.”
“We’re not sacrificing him.”
“Then what?”
Ortiz placed a replica device on the table.
“We give Miles what looks like Atlas.”
Claire stared.
“Can he tell?”
“Eventually.”
“How long?”
“Hopefully not before we get Patrick.”
“What do you need from me?”
“Nothing.”
Claire laughed.
“He requested me.”
“You are seven months pregnant and under protection.”
“He won’t release Patrick unless he sees me.”
“We can fake visual confirmation.”
“No.”
Ortiz’s expression hardened.
“This isn’t a negotiation.”
Claire stared back.
“Yes, it is.”
Rebecca entered.
“I agree with Ortiz.”
Claire turned.
“Of course you do.”
“Your job is keeping your baby alive.”
“My job is not letting other people die because they helped me.”
Rebecca softened.
“That sounds noble until your daughter pays the price.”
Claire looked away.
The words hurt because they worked.
Hours later, authorities received the meeting location.
An abandoned distribution facility outside Bridgeport.
Eleven p.m.
Patrick would be exchanged for Atlas.
Claire was not required to appear.
Which frightened Ortiz more.
“He changed the demand.”
“Why?” Rebecca asked.
Ortiz looked at Claire.
“Because I don’t think Patrick is the real objective.”
At 10:40 p.m., federal teams surrounded the facility.
Adrian watched from an unmarked vehicle two blocks away.
Ortiz had allowed him nearby because he could identify Miles’s men.
He hated every second of it.
“White van,” Adrian said.
“What?”
“On the east side. That belongs to a contractor Pike uses.”
Agents moved.
A sniper reported two men inside.
Then four.
Then six.
No sign of Patrick.
A vehicle arrived.
One of Ortiz’s undercover agents carried the replica Atlas inside a bag.
Miles appeared on a mezzanine.
Adrian saw him through surveillance footage.
His oldest friend.
His closest lieutenant.
His betrayer.
Miles looked thin.
Tired.
Dangerous.
“Where’s O’Donnell?” the undercover agent asked.
Miles smiled.
“Where’s Claire?”
“That wasn’t the deal.”
“The deal changed.”
Ortiz cursed under her breath.
Adrian leaned toward the monitor.
“He knows.”
“Knows what?”
“That the device is fake.”
“How?”
Adrian stared.
Then understood.
“The serial.”
Ortiz turned.
“What serial?”
“Internal casing. Atlas pings a dormant system when moved into authenticated network range.”
“You said it couldn’t be tracked.”
“Not globally. But Miles may have installed a local handshake detector.”
Ortiz grabbed her radio.
“Abort exchange.”
Too late.
Lights went out.
Gunfire erupted.
Agents moved.
Adrian heard shouting through the radio.
Then an explosion shook the building.
Windows shattered.
Fire rose from the loading bay.
“Where’s Patrick?” Adrian demanded.
“No confirmation.”
Miles disappeared from the cameras.
Adrian opened the vehicle door.
Ortiz grabbed his arm.
“You stay here.”
“He’s leaving through the south maintenance tunnel.”
“How do you know?”
“I own the building.”
Ortiz froze.
Adrian pointed toward a drainage road.
“Tunnel exits near the river.”
Agents moved immediately.
Adrian ignored Ortiz and ran.
“Cole!”
He reached the tunnel exit as a black sedan burst through a gate.
Agents shouted.
The sedan accelerated.
Adrian saw Miles in the passenger seat.
Their eyes met through the window.
Then Adrian saw something else.
Patrick.
In the back seat.
Alive.
Adrian stepped into the road.
The sedan did not slow.
Luca tackled Adrian aside as the car passed.
Gunfire followed.
The sedan disappeared.
Adrian hit the pavement.
Ortiz arrived furious.
“What the hell were you doing?”
“He has Patrick.”
“We know.”
“He could have been stopped.”
“You could have been killed.”
Adrian looked at her.
“That would solve several of your problems.”
Ortiz did not smile.
A radio crackled.
“Agent Ortiz.”
She answered.
“Go.”
“We found something inside.”
“What?”
“A phone.”
“Whose?”
“Unknown.”
The agent continued.
“It’s playing a recorded message.”
Ortiz and Adrian exchanged a look.
Minutes later, they stood inside the smoke-filled warehouse.
A phone rested on a chair.
Video showed Miles.
He smiled into the camera.
“If you’re watching this, Adrian, I assume your new federal friends are disappointed.”
Adrian’s jaw tightened.
Miles continued.
“You always thought loyalty came from fear. I tried to tell you fear has an expiration date.”
A pause.
“Atlas was never the only thing I wanted.”
The video shifted.
A photograph appeared.
Claire leaving Rebecca’s Boston office six weeks earlier.
Another photograph.
Claire at a doctor’s appointment.
Another.
Claire standing outside a coffee shop.
She had been watched for months.
Adrian stopped breathing.
Miles returned to the screen.
“Your wife found me because she was smarter than you.”
Another smile.
“So I studied her.”
Then the final line.
“And now I know exactly what you’re willing to lose everything to protect.”
The video ended.
Adrian stared at the black screen.
Ortiz looked at him.
“You understand what that means?”
“Yes.”
For the first time since Christmas Eve, terror overwhelmed every other emotion.
Miles no longer wanted the empire.
May you like
He wanted leverage.
And Claire was carrying it.
