Chapter 4 - ADRIAN’S MESSAGE

Claire disappeared again before sunrise.

Federal marshals moved her from Boston to a protected residence in rural Vermont.

She did not know the town.

That was intentional.

The farmhouse sat at the end of a snow-covered road surrounded by bare trees and silence.

No mansion.

No staff.

No guards in tailored suits.

No cameras she could see.

For the first time in years, nobody outside the house knew exactly where Claire Cole was sleeping.

She should have felt safe.

Instead, she felt empty.

Three days after Christmas, Agent Ortiz arrived with news.

“We authenticated Atlas.”

Claire put down the book she had been pretending to read.

“And?”

Ortiz sat across from her.

“It’s worse than you thought.”

Claire’s stomach tightened.

“Miles?”

“Miles moved approximately eighty-four million dollars over four years.”

Claire stared.

She had identified twenty-seven million.

Ortiz continued.

“There are communications suggesting a planned transfer of Cole-controlled port access, logistics contracts and several legitimate companies to Pike-associated entities.”

“He was stealing Adrian’s empire.”

“More or less.”

“What about Adrian?”

Ortiz paused.

Claire understood immediately.

“How bad?”

“Bad.”

“How bad?”

Ortiz chose her words carefully.

“Atlas also authenticates transactions that could support federal charges related to money laundering, extortion and tax fraud.”

Claire looked down.

She had known.

But knowing theoretically was different from hearing the words.

“How long?”

“I can’t predict sentencing.”

“If convicted.”

“Yes.”

Claire touched her stomach.

“Does he know I have it?”

“Almost certainly.”

“Has he tried to find me?”

Ortiz studied her.

“His people have.”

Claire’s eyes lifted.

“His people or Miles?”

“We’re trying to determine the difference.”

Claire looked toward the window.

Snow fell gently beyond the glass.

“Adrian won’t hurt me.”

Ortiz was silent.

Claire turned.

“What?”

“You keep saying that.”

“Because it’s true.”

“Maybe.”

“You don’t believe me.”

“I believe victims often understand dangerous people better than outsiders. I also believe familiarity can create blind spots.”

Claire’s eyes hardened.

“I am not one of your case studies.”

“No.”

Ortiz stood.

“You’re a woman whose husband publicly proposed to his mistress while you were carrying his child and whose criminal associates tried to run you off a road twelve hours later.”

Claire flinched.

Ortiz softened slightly.

“Trust evidence. Not memories.”

After she left, Claire cried.

Not because Ortiz was cruel.

Because she might be right.

That afternoon, Rebecca called.

“I received something.”

“What?”

“A letter.”

“From whom?”

“Adrian.”

Claire stood.

“How?”

“Courier. No return information.”

“What does it say?”

Rebecca hesitated.

“I think you should hear it.”

Claire closed her eyes.

“Read it.”

Paper rustled.

Then Rebecca spoke.

“Claire. I know you took Atlas. I know why.”

Claire’s breath caught.

Rebecca continued.

“Miles has been working with Pike. Brooke knew enough to help him manipulate me, though I don’t believe she understood the full plan.”

Claire sat slowly.

“He knows about Brooke?”

“Yes.”

Rebecca continued reading.

“I also know people connected to Pike attacked you. That did not come from me.”

Claire closed her eyes.

A tear slipped down her cheek.

“I will not ask you to trust me. I gave up that right on Christmas Eve.”

Rebecca’s voice softened.

“I will not ask you to come home. I gave up that right too.”

Claire covered her mouth.

The letter continued.

“But Miles knows about Rebecca. If he knows that, he may know more. You need to move. Do not respond to this message. Do not contact anyone from the house. Patrick is safe. Rosa is safe. Luca is safe. Trust no one else connected to me.”

Rebecca paused.

“There’s more.”

“Read it.”

“Whatever happens to me because of what you found, keep our daughter away from Miles.”

Claire whispered, “Oh God.”

Rebecca continued.

“And Claire…”

A pause.

“I am sorry.”

That was the end.

Claire stared at the floor.

Five years of marriage.

Hundreds of apologies for small things.

Sorry I’m late.

Sorry I missed dinner.

Sorry I woke you.

Sorry I forgot the appointment.

But never that.

Never an apology large enough to contain what mattered.

Rebecca waited.

“Are you okay?”

“No.”

“That may be the healthiest answer.”

Claire laughed through tears.

“Do you think he means it?”

“I think the warning is useful whether the apology is sincere or not.”

Claire wiped her face.

“That wasn’t my question.”

“I know.”

Rebecca sighed.

“I think a powerful man discovering that his closest lieutenant betrayed him has a strong incentive to tell you exactly what you want to hear.”

Claire’s heart sank.

Rebecca continued.

“I also think he didn’t ask for Atlas back.”

Claire went still.

She had missed that.

Adrian could have demanded it.

Threatened her.

Negotiated.

Begged.

He did none of those things.

He warned her.

That night, Claire could not sleep.

She walked into the small nursery the marshals had improvised in the spare bedroom.

A borrowed crib stood against the wall.

Nothing matched.

Nothing was expensive.

It was more comforting than the designer nursery in Greenwich.

She rested both hands on her stomach.

“What am I supposed to do with your father?”

The baby kicked.

Claire laughed softly.

“Not helpful.”

Her phone—one provided by authorities—rang.

Only three people had the number.

Rebecca.

Ortiz.

The emergency medical team.

Claire answered.

“Hello?”

Silence.

Then a man’s voice.

“Mrs. Cole.”

Claire froze.

She did not recognize it.

“Who is this?”

“You took something that doesn’t belong to you.”

Her heart stopped.

“Miles?”

The man laughed.

“No.”

Claire pressed the emergency alert button installed beside the phone.

“Who are you?”

“You need to return Atlas.”

“How did you get this number?”

“That should be the question frightening you.”

Claire looked toward the window.

Outside, darkness.

No movement.

The voice continued.

“Your husband has brought unnecessary attention to this situation.”

“What do you want?”

“Tomorrow. Eleven a.m. You’ll receive instructions.”

“I’m not going anywhere.”

“Then someone you care about dies.”

Claire’s blood turned cold.

“Who?”

The line disconnected.

Agents entered the room seconds later.

Ortiz was called.

Within twenty minutes they confirmed the call had been routed through multiple systems.

Untraceable quickly.

Claire paced.

“Who do they have?”

“We don’t know if they have anyone.”

“My mother lives in Florida.”

“She has local protection now.”

“Rebecca?”

“Secure.”

“Rosa?”

Ortiz frowned.

“Who is Rosa?”

“Housekeeper.”

“We’ll check.”

Claire stopped.

“Patrick.”

Ortiz was already calling.

No answer.

Again.

No answer.

Claire’s breathing changed.

“Find him.”

Agents began moving.

Forty-five minutes later, Ortiz returned.

Her face told Claire before she spoke.

“Patrick O’Donnell’s vehicle was found near Stamford.”

Claire’s knees weakened.

“Where is he?”

“We don’t know.”

Claire covered her mouth.

Patrick had helped her.

Driven her to Boston.

Kept her secret.

Miles must have discovered it.

Ortiz stepped closer.

“This is why you cannot respond.”

“They’ll kill him.”

“They may kill you both.”

“They want Atlas.”

“We cannot give it to them.”

Claire stared.

“You mean you won’t.”

Ortiz’s expression remained steady.

“That device potentially supports a major federal case.”

“A man’s life matters more.”

“I agree.”

“Then give it back.”

“It isn’t that simple.”

Claire laughed bitterly.

“It’s always simple when someone else has to die.”

Ortiz did not answer.

At the Cole estate, Adrian received the same news.

Patrick was gone.

The old man’s abandoned car had blood on the driver’s seat.

Adrian stood in his study while Luca spoke.

“Miles disappeared this morning.”

“Family?”

“Gone too.”

“Brooke?”

“Still here.”

“Pike?”

“Philadelphia property empty.”

Adrian looked at a photograph of Patrick from twenty years earlier standing beside Adrian’s father.

His hands curled into fists.

“Find Miles.”

Luca hesitated.

“What do you want done when we do?”

Adrian looked up.

For years the answer would have been obvious.

Kill him.

No court.

No police.

No second chance.

But Claire had Atlas now.

Federal authorities were watching.

His daughter was weeks away from being born.

And suddenly Adrian could see the end of every road he had spent his life walking.

Blood produced blood.

Fear produced betrayal.

Power built on silence eventually collapsed beneath it.

“Bring him to me alive.”

Luca looked surprised.

“Alive?”

“I want Patrick first.”

A phone rang.

Private line.

Adrian answered.

Miles.

“You look tired.”

Adrian stared at the hidden camera mounted on his screen.

“You can see me.”

“I can see more than you think.”

“Where is Patrick?”

“Safe for now.”

“If you hurt him—”

“What? You’ll kill me?”

Miles laughed.

“We both know that’s your answer to everything.”

Adrian’s voice became quiet.

“What do you want?”

“Atlas.”

“I don’t have it.”

“But your wife does.”

“I don’t know where Claire is.”

“Find her.”

“No.”

Silence.

Miles sounded genuinely surprised.

“No?”

“You want Atlas, find it yourself.”

“I’m holding a man who changed your diapers.”

“Patrick would rather die than help you touch Claire.”

“That’s sweet.”

Adrian’s jaw tightened.

Miles continued.

“You’ve become sentimental.”

“No.”

Adrian looked toward Claire’s empty desk.

“I’ve become selective.”

Miles laughed.

“You think she’ll forgive you?”

“No.”

“You think protecting her changes what you did?”

“No.”

“Then why?”

Adrian answered without hesitation.

“Because she’s my wife.”

Miles laughed harder.

“The wife you humiliated in front of half of Connecticut.”

Adrian’s eyes closed briefly.

“Yes.”

“That marriage is dead.”

“Maybe.”

Adrian opened his eyes.

“But you’re still not touching her.”

The line went silent.

Then Miles said,

“Eleven tomorrow.”

“For what?”

“Your wife will receive instructions.”

Adrian’s blood chilled.

“You contacted Claire?”

“Maybe.”

“I will tear apart every building between here and Philadelphia.”

“And while you do, I’ll start removing pieces of your life.”

Adrian lowered his voice.

“Touch her and there will be nowhere on this earth you can hide.”

Miles sighed.

“There he is.”

The call ended.

Adrian looked at Luca.

“Track it.”

“Working.”

“Call Ortiz.”

Luca froze.

“FBI Agent Ortiz?”

“Yes.”

“You want to call the FBI?”

Adrian picked up his coat.

“You wanted me to become a better man.”

“I never said that.”

“Good.”

May you like

Adrian headed toward the door.

“Because I’m not there yet.”
