By the following week, the rain had returned, washing over the limestone steps of the federal building.
Inside the grand jury room, Santiago sat before a panel of fifteen jurors, his voice entirely stripped of its boardroom confidence as he reviewed a series of internal emails displayed on the projection screen. The messages had been retrieved from his private server by my forensic software.

From: Santiago Rivas
Subject: Trust Authorization
“She hasn't checked the routing logs yet. I’m preparing the household papers now. Once she signs the proxy waiver, the Salazar heritage trust transfers automatically. She thinks it's just standard marital insurance.”
The lead federal prosecutor stepped forward, his voice level and sharp. "Mr. Rivas, did your mother, Beatriz, explicitly instruct you to leverage your wife’s signatures to cover her personal corporate liabilities?"
Santiago looked down at the table, his lips trembling as his defense attorney tapped him on the shoulder, whispering frantically. He knew that perjury would carry an additional ten years.
"Yes," Santiago whispered, the confession scraping out of his throat like a ghost. "She told me that since my wife hid her background, she wouldn't understand the corporate structures. She said... she said it was our money anyway because I was the one running the house."

In the gallery section behind the glass boundary, Lucia Torres sat with her head down, her hands tucked inside her sleeves to hide the bare wrist where her diamond bracelet had been. She had already signed a full immunity agreement, surrendering every single gift Santiago had ever given her in exchange for an avoided conspiracy charge.
The puzzle was completely finished. The structure of the fraud was bare under the fluorescent lights, and there was no longer any gray area left for them to hide behind.
