Chapter 3 - The Gathering Storm

By the time I pulled into the emergency bay of St. Jude’s Memorial Hospital, the cold rage inside me had solidified into a precise, tactical plan. I carried Lily inside myself, refusing the orderly who offered a wheelchair. I wanted her in my arms, where I could ensure no one touched her.
The ER staff was efficient, but when I demanded a full forensic rape kit, a toxicology screen, and a detailed documentation of her injuries, the attending doctor hesitated.
"Sir, we need to report these injuries to the local police," the doctor said, looking at the severe bruising on Lily's neck.
"Don't bother with the Oak Ridge PD," I told him, my voice leaving no room for argument. "They are compromised. Document everything, upload it to the state database immediately, and secure the physical evidence. I have federal authorities en route."
The doctor, sensing the dangerous aura around me, nodded quickly and began his work.
I sat by Lily’s bedside, holding her hand as they cleaned the blood from her lip and took high-resolution photographs of the finger marks on her throat. Every flash of the camera camera lens felt like a hammer blow to my chest.
At exactly 3:45 p.m., the door to the private room opened. Two men in dark, tailored suits stepped in. The taller one, with a jagged scar running down his jawline and shoulders that barely fit through the frame, was Marcus.
"Commander," Marcus said, stepping forward and offering a firm hand. "She looks like you. She’s got your chin."
"Marcus," I said, the relief washing over me briefly. "Thank you for coming."
"Vance gave us the rundown," Marcus said, his eyes scanning the room, instantly identifying the security blind spots. "I’ve got four of my best men outside. Nobody gets into this wing without my personal clearance. The hospital administrator has been briefed by a 'government liaison'—they won't ask questions. Your daughter is safe here."
"Thank you," I said, looking down at Lily, who had been given a mild sedative to help her rest. Her breathing was deeper now, the tension finally leaving her frail frame.
"What's the status on Sterling?" I asked, stepping away from the bed to speak in hushed tones.
Marcus grinned, a cold, predatory expression. "Vance is a wizard, Boss. He didn't just freeze Sterling’s personal accounts; he initiated a forensic audit of Sterling Enterprises. Within thirty minutes, he found three shell companies used for offshore tax evasion and a series of questionable wire transfers to a certain Chief of Police."
"Miller," I muttered.
"Exactly," Marcus said. "But that’s just the financial side. Jax is currently in Oak Ridge. He’s... let's say, gathering local intelligence. He’s got eyes on the Sterling mansion. The party is over, Commander. Richard and his mother are currently trying to figure out why all their credit cards were declined when they tried to pay the caterers."
"They're about to learn that money is just paper," I said. "And paper burns easily."
My phone buzzed again. It was a secure text from Vance.
Target 1 (Richard) attempting to move funds. Blocked. Target 2 (Chief Miller) has been flagged by the FBI’s public corruption task force. Federal warrant issuing in 1 hour.
"It's starting," I told Marcus. "I'm going back to Oak Ridge."
"Do you want backup, Commander?" Marcus asked.
"No," I replied, pulling a heavy, matte-black Glock from the hidden compartment in my waist. "Marcus, guard my daughter. If anyone so much as looks at this room the wrong way, end them."
May you like
"With pleasure, sir," Marcus said, saluting.
I kissed Lily’s forehead. She muttered something in her sleep, a soft "Daddy," that sealed my resolve. I turned and walked out of the hospital, leaving behind the quiet retired man I had tried so hard to be. The beast was fully awake now.
