Chapter 10 - A New Sunrise

The following spring, exactly one year after the nightmare on Easter Sunday, we hosted a small gathering in our backyard.
There were no white tents, no high-society guest lists, and no classical music designed to drown out the screams of the broken.
There was just a simple barbecue, the smell of grilling burgers, and the laughter of real friends. Marcus and Jax were there, sitting on the patio, sharing stories of their travels. Vance had even flown in from DC, looking surprisingly relaxed in a casual flannel shirt instead of his usual tactical gear.
Lily moved between the guests, her laughter bright and effortless. She looked radiant in a simple yellow sundress, her hair catching the warm afternoon sunlight.
She wasn't looking over her shoulder anymore. She wasn't waiting for the storm to break. She was the sunshine after the rain.
I stood by the grill, watching her.
Vance walked up beside me, handing me a cold bottle of beer. "She looks happy, Arthur."
"She is," I said, clinking my bottle against his. "She really is."
"And you?" Vance asked, his keen eyes scanning my face. "Are you finally retired, Commander?"
I looked at my daughter, who was currently laughing at one of Marcus’s terrible jokes. I looked at the quiet, peaceful neighborhood, the green grass, and the clear blue sky.
"Yes," I said, a deep, contented sigh escaping my lips. "I’m retired. I’m just a dad."
As the sun began to set, casting a warm, golden glow over the backyard, Lily walked over and slipped her arm through mine.
"Happy Easter, Dad," she whispered, leaning her head against my shoulder.

"Happy Easter, baby," I replied, kissing the top of her head.
We stood there together, watching the twilight fade into a beautiful, peaceful night, knowing that whatever the future held, we had built a foundation that no storm could ever shake. The shadows were gone, and we were finally home.
