CHAPTER 1: THE FIRST WORD

The word hit the ballroom like a lightning strike.

“Mommy.”

For a moment, nobody moved.

The violinists stopped playing.

Champagne glasses hung frozen in midair.

Even the politicians and billionaires filling the Mercer Foundation Gala seemed unable to breathe.

Logan Mercer stared at his son.

Noah had not spoken a complete word in nearly four years.

Doctors called it selective mutism.

Specialists blamed anxiety.

Therapists spent hundreds of hours trying to reach him.

Yet now, wrapped around the waist of a woman he had known for less than two weeks, Noah spoke as clearly as any child.

“Mommy.”

Marina looked horrified.

Her hands trembled as she carefully knelt beside him.

“Noah, sweetheart...”

The boy only held her tighter.

Tears filled his eyes.

For the first time, Logan noticed something he should have seen long ago.

Noah wasn't confused.

He wasn't mistaken.

He looked safe.

Safer than Logan had ever seen him.

Vanessa pushed through the crowd.

Her perfect smile was gone.

“Get him away from her,” she snapped.

The harshness in her voice made Noah flinch violently.

The reaction was instant.

And impossible to ignore.

Logan felt something cold slide down his spine.

Because Noah never reacted that way around strangers.

Only around Vanessa.

Marina's face turned pale.

Vanessa saw it.

And for the briefest second...

Fear flashed across both women's faces.

The same fear.

The same secret.

That was when Logan knew.

Something was terribly wrong.

And both women knew exactly what it was.

That night, after the gala ended, Logan ordered a private investigation.

He wanted every record connected to Noah's birth.

Every hospital document.

Every employee file.

Every security recording from the past six years.

For the first time in his life...

May you like

He stopped trusting appearances.

And started looking for the truth.
