Chapter 9 - THE TWIN SECRET

For seventeen years, my mother had carried a secret that could destroy everything I believed about my childhood.

Vanessa wasn't simply my half-sister.

She was my twin.

We had been born on the same night.

Same hospital.

Same father.

Same mother.

But we had been separated.

"Why?" I whispered.

My mother couldn't meet my eyes.

"Leonard."

"What did he do?"

"He threatened to take both of you."

My mother told us the story.

My father had discovered Leonard's fraud operation.

He planned to expose him.

Leonard responded by threatening our family.

He said he would use his connections to take the children.

My father refused.

So Leonard created a plan.

One child would remain with my parents.

The other would disappear.

Vanessa was given to another family.

My mother had been told she would never see her again.

"But why didn't you tell me?"

"Because your father believed Leonard was still watching."

I stared at the photograph.

"What happened to Dad?"

My mother began crying.

"He was killed."

The room became silent.

"An accident?"

She shook her head.

"No."

"Leonard?"

"We never proved it."

I clenched my fists.

"But he knew."

"Yes."

Rachel stood.

"Then we have motive."

"We need proof," I said.

"We'll find it."

That night, Vanessa and I sat together for the first time as sisters.

It felt strange.

We had the same eyes.

The same smile.

Even the same habit of tapping our fingers when nervous.

"I can't believe this," she whispered.

"Neither can I."

She looked at me.

"Do you hate me?"

"No."

"Even though I was with Michael?"

"You were manipulated too."

She nodded.

"I thought he loved me."

"So did I."

We both laughed sadly.

Then Vanessa said:

"There's something else."

"What?"

"Michael told me something before he was arrested."

"What?"

"He said the ledger isn't just about stolen properties."

I looked at her.

"What else?"

"He said it contains names."

"Whose?"

"Judges."

I froze.

"Police officers."

My blood ran cold.

"Politicians."

Rachel, who had been reviewing documents nearby, looked up.

"And federal officials."

The room went silent.

Suddenly, the Coleman family wasn't merely wealthy.

They were connected.

Powerfully connected.

And if we exposed the ledger, people much more dangerous than Hattie would come after us.

At midnight, the power went out.

Every light in the house disappeared.

Vanessa stood.

"What happened?"

I heard glass break downstairs.

Rachel immediately reached for her phone.

"Stay here."

Then footsteps.

Someone was coming upstairs.

Slowly.

Deliberately.

My mother whispered:

"Penelope."

I grabbed her hand.

The bedroom door handle moved.

Once.

Twice.

Then stopped.

A voice came through the door.

"Girls."

Leonard.

"You have something that belongs to me."

I looked at Vanessa.

Neither of us moved.

Leonard continued.

"You have ten seconds."

Rachel whispered:

"Police are two minutes away."

Leonard laughed.

"Nine."

Vanessa grabbed my hand.

"Eight."

The door began to open.

"Seven."

Then suddenly—

A gunshot shattered the hallway.
