Chapter 5 - THE SECRET ACCOUNT

The arrests made the news by sunrise.

Not because Michael Coleman had been arrested.

But because the police discovered something inside the cabin.

A locked basement.

Behind a false wall.

There were boxes.

Dozens of them.

Property documents.

Bank statements.

Identity records.

Forged signatures.

Photographs.

And a handwritten list of names.

I was on it.

My mother was on it.

But we weren't the only ones.

There were eleven names.

All women.

All connected to wealthy men.

Rachel stared at the list.

"This is bigger than your marriage."

I knew that.

But what I didn't know was why my name was at the top.

"What does the number beside each name mean?"

Rachel examined it.

"Payments."

I looked at her.

"Payments for what?"

"We don't know."

Then an investigator entered.

"Ms. Bennett?"

"Yes?"

"We found something you should see."

He handed Rachel a sealed evidence bag.

Inside was a small black notebook.

Rachel opened it.

The handwriting belonged to Hattie.

Every page contained dates, names, amounts, and property addresses.

Then I saw something that made my blood run cold.

My own name.

Beside it was a number.

$8,400,000.

I stared.

"What's that?"

The investigator shook his head.

"We don't know."

Rachel turned another page.

There were entries about my company.

My investments.

My apartment.

Then:

Step One — Marriage.

Step Two — Trust.

Step Three — Transfer.

Step Four — Isolation.

Step Five — Accident.

I couldn't breathe.

My mother took my hand.

"Penelope."

I whispered:

"They weren't trying to divorce me."

Rachel looked at me.

"No."

"They were trying to take everything."

"Yes."

I turned the page.

There was one final entry.

Final beneficiary: Michael Coleman.

But beneath it was a handwritten correction.

Someone had crossed out Michael's name.

Underneath, another name had been written.

Grant Coleman.

I stared at Rachel.

"Grant?"

She nodded.

"The family may not have been working together."

"What?"

"Michael may have thought he was taking control."

She closed the notebook.

"But someone may have been using Michael."

My mind raced.

Hattie.

Michael.

Grant.

Who was actually in charge?

Then the investigator spoke.

"We found one more thing."

He handed me a photograph.

It showed Hattie meeting a man outside a bank.

I recognized him immediately.

He was older.

Gray hair.

Expensive suit.

My stomach tightened.

"Who is that?"

The investigator said:

"That's Leonard Coleman."

I stared at him.

"Michael's father?"

"No."

He paused.

"His grandfather."

I felt a chill.

"He's dead."

The investigator looked at me.

"Officially."

Silence filled the room.

Rachel slowly turned toward me.

"What?"

The investigator placed another photograph on the table.

This one had been taken only three weeks earlier.

Leonard Coleman was standing outside a private bank.

Alive.

Very much alive.

My entire understanding of Michael's family collapsed.

Then my phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

One message.

You should have stayed quiet, Penelope.

A second message arrived.

Now you've forced me to come home.

I stared at the screen.

Rachel asked:

"Who sent it?"

I slowly looked up.

"I think I know."

"Who?"

I showed her the message.

She read it.

Her face went pale.

"Leonard."

My mother tightened her grip on my hand.

Outside, a black sedan stopped across the street.

A man stepped out.

He looked directly at the window.

Then he smiled.

And raised one hand.

As if greeting an old friend.

I knew then that Michael's arrest hadn't ended the nightmare.

May you like

It had only removed the first piece from the board.

And the person who had been moving the pieces was finally here.
