Chapter 2 - THE WOMAN BEHIND THE PLAN

The next morning, my attorney, Rachel Morgan, met me at her office.

Rachel was the kind of woman who never raised her voice because she never needed to.

She placed a folder on the desk.

"Before we discuss divorce," she said, "we need to discuss fraud."

I opened the folder.

Inside were copies of documents connected to my marriage.

Property inquiries.

Bank requests.

A draft power of attorney.

A proposed refinancing application.

And something that made my stomach turn.

A life-insurance policy inquiry.

I looked at Rachel.

"Why would Michael be asking about my life insurance?"

"He wasn't."

She slid another page toward me.

"The inquiry came from someone named Hattie Coleman."

My jaw tightened.

"My mother-in-law."

"Yes."

I stared at the document.

"She has no authority over me."

"Correct."

"Then how did she obtain my information?"

Rachel didn't answer immediately.

Instead, she opened another file.

"That's where things become interesting."

She showed me a series of photographs.

They had been taken outside my apartment.

Michael entering.

Hattie leaving.

A man I didn't recognize standing near the parking garage.

"Who's he?"

"We're trying to identify him."

I looked closer.

He was middle-aged.

Gray hair.

Dark jacket.

He wasn't looking at the building.

He was looking directly at the camera.

"He's security-conscious."

Rachel nodded.

"Very."

My phone rang.

It was my company's chief financial officer.

I answered.

"Penelope, we have a problem."

"What kind?"

"Michael just contacted our accounting department."

My heart sank.

"What did he ask for?"

"Corporate records."

"Which ones?"

"Your shareholder information."

I stood.

"He has no authority to request those."

"I told him that."

"What did he say?"

The CFO hesitated.

"He said he was your husband and that you were having a mental-health crisis."

My face went cold.

Rachel looked at me.

"What?"

I put the call on speaker.

"Did he mention anything else?"

"Yes."

"What?"

"He said you were unstable after your mother's visit and that he was concerned you might attempt to move company assets."

Rachel's expression hardened.

I ended the call.

"He's building a story."

"Exactly," Rachel said.

"A story that I'm unstable."

"Or incompetent."

"Or dangerous."

She nodded.

"Because if they want to control your finances, they need a reason."

I looked at the forged power of attorney.

"Then let's give them a reason to regret trying."

Rachel smiled faintly.

"That's the woman I was hoping would walk into my office."

That afternoon, I returned to my company.

The moment I entered the lobby, employees stopped talking.

I didn't need to ask why.

Someone had already spread the story.

Michael had told people we were having marital problems.

He had apparently described me as "emotionally unstable."

He had even suggested that I was having a breakdown because of "family pressure."

I walked directly into the executive conference room.

My CFO stood.

"I'm sorry."

"Don't be."

I placed my handbag on the table.

"Has Michael accessed anything?"

"No."

"Has anyone given him information?"

"No."

"Good."

I looked around the room.

"Effective immediately, nobody discusses my personal life with Michael."

Everyone nodded.

"And if he contacts you?"

"Refer him to legal."

I sat down.

Then my assistant entered.

"Penelope?"

"Yes?"

"There is a woman here asking to see you."

"Who?"

She hesitated.

"She says her name is Vanessa."

My heart stopped.

Rachel looked at me.

"Vanessa who?"

"Vanessa Reed."

The room became silent.

I had never heard that name.

But something inside me reacted to it.

"Send her in."

A few seconds later, a woman entered.

She was in her early thirties.

Elegant.

Calm.

Beautiful in the effortless way that made people look twice.

She held a small envelope.

She looked at me.

"My name is Vanessa Reed."

"I know."

"No," she said.

"You don't."

She placed the envelope on the table.

"Because I'm the woman your husband has been seeing."

The room went silent.

I felt something crack inside me.

Not heartbreak.

That had already happened.

This was something colder.

Vanessa sat down.

"I didn't come here to fight you."

"Then why are you here?"

"Because Michael lied to me too."

I crossed my arms.

"About what?"

"Almost everything."

She opened the envelope.

Inside were photographs.

Michael and Vanessa.

Restaurants.

Hotels.

Trips.

But the last photograph was different.

It showed Michael and Hattie together.

They were sitting in a private room at a restaurant.

Between them was a document.

Vanessa pointed at it.

"That's where I realized something was wrong."

"What is it?"

"Your prenup."

I froze.

"I don't have a prenup."

Vanessa stared at me.

"That's what Michael told me."

She pushed another photograph toward me.

There was a handwritten note beneath it.

Once Penelope signs, everything becomes ours.

My blood ran cold.

"I never signed anything."

"I know."

Vanessa leaned closer.

"Because I saw the original."

"Where?"

"Hattie's house."

I stared at her.

"Why were you there?"

"Because Michael promised he was leaving you."

She looked ashamed.

"He told me you were unstable. He said your marriage was already over. He said he only needed a little time to protect himself."

I said nothing.

Vanessa's eyes filled with tears.

"I believed him."

Then she whispered:

"Until I heard him talking to his mother."

"What did they say?"

Vanessa swallowed.

"They weren't planning to divorce you."

"What were they planning?"

She looked directly at me.

"They were planning to make you disappear."

The room seemed to shrink.

Rachel stood.

"Explain."

Vanessa shook her head.

"I don't know everything."

"What do you know?"

"Your husband has been talking about a cabin in northern Arizona."

My heart began pounding.

"Why?"

"He said nobody would look for you there."

I stared at her.

May you like

Then Vanessa added:

"And he said your mother would be blamed for helping you run away."
