Chapter 9 - The Verdict

The jury did not take long to reach a decision.

After only forty-five minutes of deliberation, the court was called back to order, the silence in the room so absolute you could hear the rhythmic click of the grandfather clock in the judge’s chambers.

"On the counts of felony child abuse, unlawful restraint, and financial exploitation of a minor, how do you find the defendant, Kate Morrison?" the judge asked.

"Guilty, Your Honor," the foreman announced.

"On the counts of corporate embezzlement, wire fraud, and conspiracy to commit grand larceny, how do you find the defendant, Silvio Rossi?"

"Guilty, Your Honor."

The judge did not hold back her fury. She leaned over her high bench, her eyes locked onto Kate and Silvio, her face carrying the hard, terrifying dignity of a woman who spent her life defending the weak.

"In my thirty years on the bench," Judge Ross said, her voice echoing through the silent stone chamber, "I have rarely seen a case of corporate greed and domestic cruelty so utterly devoid of human decency. You, Kate Morrison, used the sacred trust of your late sister’s memory to systematically torment and starve her children. And you, Silvio Rossi, used your lifelong friendship with this family to facilitate that abuse for a thirty-percent share of a Panamanian brokerage fund."

She raised her gavel, her hand steady and strong.

"Kate Morrison, you are sentenced to twenty-two years in a maximum-security state facility, with no possibility of parole. Silvio Rossi, you are sentenced to fifteen years in a federal penitentiary, followed by ten years of mandatory financial supervision."

As the heavy gavel fell against the wooden block with a loud, definitive crack, Daniel pulled Lily onto his lap, his arms wrapping around her small, strong shoulders. She didn't flinch. She leaned into his chest, her head resting against his collar, her breathing deep, even, and completely peaceful.

The storm was finally over.
