Chapter 4 - The Legal Wall

The Cook County Criminal Courthouse was a dark, limestone fortress that looked like it had been designed to block out the sun.

Daniel walked through the metal detectors, his security team flanking him, their eyes scanning the crowd of reporters who had gathered in the lobby. The news of the Ashford estate scandal had hit the front pages of the Tribune that morning, and the public was eager to see the "absentee billionaire" face the woman who had lived under his roof.

Kate Morrison sat at the defense table, wearing a sharp, cream-colored wool suit that made her look like a respectable suburban schoolteacher. Her hair was pulled back into a neat, disciplined bun, and her hands were clasped together in a posture of quiet, elegant sorrow.

Beside her sat Richard Ramos, her attorney—a man with silver hair and the polished, arrogant stride of a person who had spent thirty years saving the children of wealthy families from their own mistakes.

"Your Honor," Ramos began, his voice booming through the vaulted courtroom. "This is a tragic case of a father trying to shift the blame for his own profound neglect. Daniel Ashford is a billionaire who spent fourteen months living in five-star hotels while my client, Kate Morrison, sacrificed her own career to care for his traumatized children. Now, because he returned home early and found his daughter having a typical childhood emotional episode, he has launched a systematic, state-funded campaign to destroy her reputation."

The judge, a formidable woman with sharp gray eyes named Judge Katherine Ross, looked over her reading glasses at the defense table. "Mr. Ramos, the state’s attorney has submitted a physical ledger containing detailed logs of child confinement, along with medical reports showing multiple contusions on the child’s body. How does your client explain those injuries?"

"The child is hyperactive, Your Honor," Ramos said smoothly. "She fell from her play set in the backyard. We have medical reports from a private clinic in Elgin showing she was treated for those scrapes last summer. The 'confinement logs' your daughter kept are nothing more than the creative, traumatized writings of a child who has been abandoned by her father and is projecting her anger onto her caregiver."

Daniel sat in the front row of the gallery, his hand resting on the wooden divider, his fingers tightening until the wood groaned. He wanted to lunge across the room, to grab Ramos by his expensive silk tie and show him the bruises on his daughter's wrists. But he kept his posture perfectly straight, remembering his father’s old advice: Never fight a dog on his own dirt.

"The state’s attorney has also submitted a video file, Your Honor," the prosecutor, a sharp-eyed young woman named Sofia Cruz, said, standing up from her table. "It was recovered from a hidden camera built into the kitchen’s range hood—a camera that the defendant believed had been deactivated when she turned off the main security system."

Kate’s head snapped toward the prosecutor, her elegant composure finally cracking, a thin line of sweat appearing along her collar.

"We request permission to play the video for the court, Your Honor," Sofia said.

"Permission granted," the judge said.
