Chapter 7 - VANESSA’S CONFESSION

My first instinct was to hang up.

The woman speaking had slept with my husband.

Worn my mother’s necklace.

Smiled while Daniel threw my daughter and me out of our home.

Now she wanted help.

But her last sentence stopped me.

Your father will be next.

“Explain,” I said.

Vanessa breathed shakily.

“I can’t over the phone.”

“Then meet me.”

“No.”

“Vanessa, you just said you hurt Rebecca.”

“I pushed her.”

My father’s eyes narrowed.

“Why?”

Vanessa heard his voice.

“Because she had the files.”

“What files?” I asked.

“The ones Daniel wanted.”

“Did he tell you to attack her?”

“No. He told me to get the drive.”

“Why?”

“Because Thomas said if Daniel didn’t bring it back, they would destroy both of us.”

Thomas.

There it was again.

My father leaned toward the phone.

“Where is Keane?”

“I don’t know.”

“When did you last speak to him?”

“Yesterday.”

“What did he say?”

“That the merger collapsing changed everything.”

I closed my eyes.

“Vanessa, did you know about the listening devices in my house?”

Silence.

That was enough.

“You knew.”

“I helped install one.”

My stomach turned.

My father muttered something I had never heard him say in front of me before.

Vanessa began talking quickly.

“Daniel told me it was to protect himself.”

“From me?”

“He said you were hiding money and planning to divorce him.”

“And you believed that?”

“At first.”

I laughed bitterly.

“How convenient.”

“I know how this sounds.”

“No, Vanessa. You don’t.”

My voice cracked.

“You stood inside my home wearing my mother’s jewelry while my husband threw our newborn daughter outside.”

“I know.”

“No, you don’t know.”

She started crying again.

I did not care.

Then she said, “The necklace wasn’t Daniel’s idea.”

I went silent.

“What?”

“Thomas gave it to me.”

My father stiffened.

Vanessa continued.

“He said Eleanor’s jewelry belonged to the family eventually anyway. He wanted me to wear it.”

“Why?”

“I think he wanted to provoke you.”

The cruelty of it landed slowly.

Not random humiliation.

Calculated humiliation.

Someone had wanted me emotional.

Angry.

Unstable.

Why?

Then I understood.

Custody.

Inheritance.

Corporate control.

If Daniel could portray me as psychologically unstable after childbirth, he could potentially challenge decisions I made.

Perhaps even argue I lacked capacity when control of the trust transferred.

My father reached the same conclusion.

“Claire.”

“I know.”

Vanessa whispered, “There’s more.”

“Of course there is.”

“Daniel has been collecting medical information about you.”

I felt physically ill.

“What medical information?”

“Your postpartum appointments. Prescription records. Notes from your therapist after your mother died.”

My father’s face darkened.

“How?”

“I don’t know all of it.”

“Vanessa.”

“Daniel had access to documents.”

“My therapy records are private.”

“I know.”

I could barely speak.

“What was he planning?”

“To say you were unstable.”

There it was.

“He wanted Lily?”

“No.”

That answer came too fast.

I stared at the phone.

“What do you mean, no?”

Vanessa hesitated.

“He wanted control.”

“Of what?”

“Everything that comes through Lily.”

My father frowned.

Then Martin, standing behind us, quietly said, “The contingent inheritance.”

I turned.

“What?”

Martin looked uncomfortable.

My father closed his eyes.

I stared at him.

“What contingent inheritance?”

“Claire…”

“No more secrets.”

We were standing in the middle of Union Station with strangers walking around us.

I did not care.

“Tell me.”

My father exhaled.

“Your mother added a provision to one trust after you became engaged.”

“To Daniel?”

“Yes.”

“What provision?”

“If you died before reaching forty, a portion of the voting shares would be held for your children.”

The blood drained from my face.

“And who controls those shares while the child is a minor?”

Martin answered.

“The surviving legal guardian could petition for influence over the trust administration.”

Daniel.

If something happened to me, Daniel could use Lily to gain leverage over Harlow Industries.

My hands began shaking.

Vanessa whispered, “Now you understand.”

I could barely hear her.

“Understand what?”

“Why Thomas calls Lily the insurance policy.”

My father grabbed the phone.

“Where are you?”

“I said I can’t—”

“Vanessa, if you know anything that threatens my daughter or granddaughter, I will protect you. But you have to tell me where you are.”

Silence.

Then she whispered an address.

A motel outside Baltimore.

Adrian immediately sent a team.

“Stay inside,” he told her. “Lock the door.”

“I already did.”

“Don’t open it for anyone until my people identify themselves.”

She began to answer.

Then someone knocked loudly on her door.

Vanessa stopped breathing.

“Is that your team?”

Adrian looked at his phone.

“No.”

Another knock.

Three heavy blows.

Vanessa whispered, “Oh God.”

“Move away from the door.”

A man’s voice came faintly through the phone.

“Vanessa.”

Daniel.

My heart stopped.

“Open the door.”

Vanessa began crying.

Adrian spoke urgently.

“Go into the bathroom. Lock yourself in.”

We heard movement.

Then Daniel again.

“I know you called Claire.”

A crash.

The motel door had been forced.

Vanessa screamed.

The phone fell.

We heard shouting.

Furniture breaking.

Then Daniel’s voice, closer now.

“You stupid woman.”

Vanessa screamed again.

My father looked at Adrian.

“How far is your team?”

“Four minutes.”

Daniel continued.

“Where are the files?”

“I don’t have them!”

“You gave them to Rebecca.”

“No!”

A slap.

I flinched.

Then Vanessa shouted something unexpected.

“Claire already has the laptop!”

Silence.

I stared at the phone.

My father stared at me.

Daniel spoke very quietly.

“What did you say?”

Vanessa realized her mistake.

“No—”

“You gave it to Claire?”

“No!”

Daniel’s voice changed completely.

Calm.

Cold.

The same voice he used when he threw Lily’s crib outside.

“Then Claire is the problem now.”

The call disconnected.

My father grabbed my arm.

“We’re leaving.”

Adrian was already issuing orders.

“Move the vehicle. Alternate route. Security on the estate doubled immediately.”

I stood frozen.

Daniel knew I had Rebecca’s laptop.

Which meant whatever was on it mattered more than his marriage.

More than his career.

Possibly more than his freedom.

My phone vibrated.

A message from Daniel.

SEND ME THE LAPTOP.

Then another.

YOU HAVE ONE HOUR.

My father read over my shoulder.

A third message arrived.

A photograph loaded.

It showed the nursery at my father’s estate.

Lily’s new crib.

Taken from inside the room.

My heart stopped.

“No.”

We had left Lily there.

My father immediately called the estate.

No answer.

Adrian called security.

No answer.

Then my phone rang.

Daniel.

I answered.

His voice was calm.

“Now, Claire.”

I could barely breathe.

“Where is my daughter?”

He laughed softly.

“I’m not the one you should be asking.”

The line disconnected.

I looked at my father.

For the first time since this nightmare began, Arthur Harlow looked terrified.

May you like

And so was I.

Because someone was inside the house with my baby.
