Chapter 14 - THE BOARDROOM WAR

I realized immediately that something was wrong with Daniel.

Not guilt.

Not betrayal.

Fear.

His right hand trembled beneath the table.

Thomas did not notice.

I did.

Caroline sat beside him with perfect composure.

Twelve board members occupied the long table.

My father sat at one end.

I sat at the other.

For decades, Arthur Harlow had controlled every room inside this building.

That morning, everyone watched me.

Thomas smiled.

“Shall we begin?”

Martin stood.

“This emergency meeting concerns financial misconduct, attempted manipulation of trust assets, and possible criminal interference with corporate governance.”

Caroline laughed.

“That sounds theatrical.”

I looked at her.

“You tried to arrange my death.”

Several board members reacted.

Thomas did not.

Caroline leaned back.

“Based on an edited recording provided by your adulterous husband?”

Daniel looked at the table.

Interesting.

She was already preparing to discredit him.

I pressed a button.

The video appeared on the wall.

Thomas discussing widowers and newborn daughters.

Caroline saying my mother should have died sooner.

Nobody spoke.

When it ended, board member Henry Sloane looked horrified.

“Thomas?”

Thomas sighed.

“A manipulated recording.”

“Really?” I asked.

“Yes.”

“Then you won’t object to forensic authentication.”

“I welcome it.”

His confidence bothered me.

He had expected this.

Caroline folded her hands.

“Claire, grief has made you reckless.”

I almost smiled.

“Which grief?”

She frowned.

“My mother? My marriage? Or the imaginary death you were planning?”

My father hid a smile.

Caroline’s expression tightened.

I continued.

“I am placing a motion to suspend Thomas Keane from all corporate authority pending criminal investigation.”

Thomas looked at the board.

“This is absurd.”

Voting began.

Six in favor.

Five against.

One abstention.

Enough.

Thomas’s face changed for the first time.

Then I made the second motion.

Removal of Caroline Harlow from foundation governance and all advisory access.

That vote passed eight to four.

Caroline laughed.

“You think titles matter?”

“No.”

I leaned forward.

“Access does.”

Her smile disappeared.

I looked at Adrian.

“Disable both credentials.”

“Done.”

Thomas abruptly stood.

“This meeting is over.”

“No.”

I looked at him.

“It’s finally starting.”

Two federal agents entered.

Then three more.

Thomas stopped.

Caroline did not move.

My father looked confused.

I had not told him.

Daniel finally raised his eyes toward me.

Relief flashed across his face.

Then I understood.

This was the plan.

He had returned with them to make Thomas believe he had changed sides again.

Federal agents approached.

“Thomas Keane?”

Thomas laughed.

“Do you have a warrant?”

“Yes.”

The agent placed documents on the table.

“Conspiracy, wire fraud, securities fraud, obstruction, and witness tampering.”

Thomas looked at Daniel.

“You.”

Daniel stood slowly.

“Yes.”

Caroline whispered something under her breath.

Then suddenly reached inside her handbag.

Adrian moved.

So did federal agents.

Caroline pulled out a small remote device.

She pressed a button.

Nothing happened.

Her face changed.

Adrian held up another device.

“Signal jammer.”

My blood ran cold.

“What was that supposed to do?”

Caroline stared at me.

Then smiled.

“You’ll find out.”

A loud boom shook the building.

The windows trembled.

Everyone screamed.

Smoke rose outside.

My father rushed toward the window.

“Garage.”

Adrian shouted into his radio.

A vehicle had exploded in the underground parking structure.

Chaos erupted.

Fire alarms sounded.

Board members rushed toward exits.

Federal agents secured Thomas and Caroline.

Then the building lights went out.

Emergency lighting activated.

I thought of Lily.

She was upstairs in my father’s private suite with the nurse and security.

I ran.

“Claire!” my father shouted.

I ignored him.

Smoke filled portions of the stairwell.

Elevators were disabled.

I climbed three floors.

My lungs burned.

When I reached the executive level, two security officers lay unconscious near the door.

My heart stopped.

I ran toward the private suite.

The door stood open.

The nurse was crying.

“Where is Lily?”

She pointed toward the balcony.

A man stood outside holding my daughter.

Daniel.

I froze.

He held Lily tightly against his chest.

“Daniel.”

He looked at me.

“Stay back.”

My blood went cold.

“What are you doing?”

His face was wet with tears.

“I’m sorry.”

“Give me Lily.”

“I can’t.”

“Daniel.”

Then I saw another man standing behind him.

Gun pressed against Daniel’s side.

Thomas Keane.

My mind struggled to understand.

Thomas had been downstairs.

Then I realized.

The man arrested in the boardroom was not Thomas.

A double?

A disguise?

No.

Thomas smiled.

“Private service elevator.”

Of course.

He had built the company’s security architecture with my father.

He knew every hidden route.

“How did you get free?”

“Caroline planned distractions well.”

I looked at Lily.

She had begun crying.

My entire body wanted to attack him.

I forced myself to stay still.

“What do you want?”

Thomas looked at me.

“The trust authorization.”

“You can’t take it.”

“I can make you resign.”

“No.”

He pressed the gun harder against Daniel.

“I don’t care what happens to him.”

Daniel flinched.

Thomas smiled.

“I know.”

Then he moved the gun toward Lily.

Everything inside me stopped.

Daniel immediately turned his body, shielding her.

“No.”

Thomas’s expression hardened.

“Move.”

“No.”

Daniel looked at me.

For the first time since this nightmare began, I saw the man I once loved.

Not the arrogant executive.

Not the cheating husband.

Lily’s father.

He whispered, “Claire, run.”

Thomas struck him with the gun.

Daniel staggered but did not release Lily.

I moved forward.

Thomas raised the weapon toward me.

“Sign the resignation.”

“I don’t have it.”

“Your attorney does.”

“Then you need him.”

“No.”

His smile returned.

“I only need your fingerprint.”

My stomach dropped.

Digital authorization.

He wanted access to the trust platform.

Then my mother’s words came back.

Do not trust appearances.

My father had always said Mom built redundancies into everything.

I slowly raised my hand.

“Fine.”

Thomas relaxed slightly.

“Good girl.”

Daniel looked at me desperately.

I stepped toward the biometric terminal built into the executive desk.

Thomas followed.

I pressed my finger against the reader.

The system beeped.

ACCESS DENIED.

Thomas frowned.

“Again.”

I did.

ACCESS DENIED.

His face darkened.

“What did you do?”

I smiled.

“Mom did it.”

“What?”

“Emergency control requires two beneficiaries.”

Thomas stared.

“There is only one.”

I looked at Lily.

“No.”

His face changed.

The second beneficiary was my daughter.

A minor.

Which meant a court-appointed guardian protocol had to validate any emergency transfer.

Thomas could not simply force my fingerprint.

He had failed.

Rage transformed his face.

He raised the gun.

Then Daniel moved.

He threw himself backward into Thomas.

The gun fired.

I screamed.

Daniel fell.

Lily rolled against his chest.

Thomas stumbled toward the balcony rail.

Adrian burst through the doorway.

Federal agents followed.

“Drop the weapon!”

Thomas raised it.

Three shots erupted.

Thomas collapsed.

I ran toward Daniel.

Blood spread across his white shirt.

Lily screamed in his arms.

I lifted her first.

She was unharmed.

Then I looked at Daniel.

He stared up at me.

“Is she okay?”

“Yes.”

He smiled weakly.

“Good.”

His eyes closed.

“Daniel!”

Paramedics rushed in.

I held Lily and watched them work on my husband.

I did not know whether I wanted him forgiven.

I did not know whether our marriage had anything left to save.

But as they carried him away, one truth was undeniable.

May you like

Daniel had taken the bullet meant for our daughter.

And for the first time since his betrayal began, I had no idea what came next.
