Chapter 9 - THE WOMAN I BURIED

I spent the entire night searching old records.
My mother's death certificate.
Hospital records.
Funeral documents.
Everything was real.
Except one thing.
There had never been a body.
The funeral had been closed-casket.
I had been twelve.
My father had told me she had died suddenly.
But my father had disappeared six months later.
I suddenly remembered something he'd said.
If anyone asks, your mother is gone.
I had forgotten it.
Until now.
Detective Brooks contacted an investigator in another state.
Within hours, they found my mother.
Alive.
Her name was no longer Emily Carter's mother.
She had been living under another identity.
And she agreed to meet me.
When she walked into the room, I couldn't breathe.
She was older.
Her hair was gray.
But her eyes were exactly the same.
“Mom?”
She started crying.
I stepped toward her.
Then stopped.
“Why?”
She covered her mouth.
“I was trying to protect you.”
“From what?”
“The Carters.”
I stared at her.
“You knew them?”
She nodded.
“Your father worked for them.”
“What?”
“He discovered the trust.”
“The eighty-million-dollar trust?”
“Yes.”
“But why?”
“Because the trust wasn't created for the Carter family.”
I frowned.
“What do you mean?”
“It was created for descendants of a woman named Eleanor Carter.”
“Who was she?”
My mother looked at me.
“Your grandmother.”
My heart stopped.
“Your grandmother was the original heir.”
She continued.
“The Carter family stole everything.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because they killed people who knew.”
My voice shook.
“Did they kill my father?”
She looked down.
“Yes.”
I felt the room spin.
“Then how did you survive?”
“I ran.”
“And me?”
“I couldn't take you.”
“Why?”
“Because they were watching.”
I started crying.
“You left me.”
“I know.”
“You let me believe you were dead.”
“I know.”
“But why come back now?”
She looked toward my stomach.
“Because they found you.”
My mother revealed the final piece.
My baby wasn't merely an heir.
The child carried a genetic marker tied to Eleanor's bloodline.
That marker was required to activate the trust.
Without my baby, the money remained locked.
The Carter family had spent decades trying to produce a legitimate heir.
Now they believed they had one.
My husband had married me knowing about the bloodline.
I stared at her.
“He knew?”
“Yes.”
“How?”
“His family told him.”
“So he never loved me.”
My mother didn't answer.
She didn't have to.
That night, Detective Brooks arrested Margaret.
Robert agreed to testify.
Natalie entered protective custody.
My husband disappeared.
For three days, nobody knew where he was.
Then a package arrived at the police station.
Inside was a USB drive.
And a handwritten note.
Ask Emily what happened on the night she was born.
My mother looked at the note.
Her face went pale.
“What?”
May you like
She whispered:
“Your baby isn't the first heir.”
