Chapter 5 - THE HOUSE WASN'T EMPTY

My husband didn't come to the hospital.
He went home.
That was worse.
Because I knew what that meant.
He was looking for something.
Detective Brooks arranged security outside my room.
Rachel refused to leave me.
Claire slept in the chair beside my bed.
At 3:11 a.m., the security alarm sounded.
Everyone woke.
A nurse rushed into the room.
“There's someone in the parking garage.”
Detective Brooks arrived seconds later.
The hospital cameras showed a man walking between the cars.
Dark jacket.
Baseball cap.
Face hidden.
Then he looked directly at one camera.
He knew where it was.
And smiled.
Detective Brooks immediately ordered a lockdown.
The man disappeared.
Ten minutes later, police found his vehicle abandoned two blocks away.
Inside was a photograph.
My photograph.
Taken outside the hospital.
And beneath it:
Tomorrow.
I couldn't sleep.
At dawn, Rachel told me something.
“I lied to you.”
I looked at her.
“About what?”
She stared at the floor.
“I knew why Margaret wanted the baby.”
My heart stopped.
“What?”
“She told me.”
“When?”
“Before you found out you were pregnant.”
“Why didn't you tell me?”
“Because she threatened me.”
“With what?”
“She said she'd destroy your marriage.”
I almost laughed.
“My marriage was already destroyed.”
Rachel's eyes filled with tears.
“She knew.”
“Knew what?”
“That your husband had another woman.”
I froze.
“What?”
Rachel nodded.
“She had been seeing him for months.”
“Who?”
Rachel whispered:
“Margaret's niece.”
My stomach twisted.
“That's impossible.”
“I saw them together.”
“Rachel…”
“He wasn't cheating because he loved her.”
“Then why?”
Rachel looked at me.
“Because she was pregnant too.”
The room went silent.
“What?”
“She was pregnant with your husband's child.”
I couldn't breathe.
My baby.
Another woman.
Another pregnancy.
Another secret.
But then Rachel said something that changed everything.
“She wasn't carrying his baby.”
I stared at her.
“Then whose was it?”
Rachel swallowed.
“Robert's.”
The pieces began fitting together.
Robert.
Margaret.
My husband.
The shell company.
The adoption agency.
The genetic tests.
The forged custody agreement.
It wasn't about an affair.
It was about money.
A child.
An inheritance.
And a family secret that went back decades.
Detective Brooks listened to everything.
Then he said:
“We need to know what Robert's family is hiding.”
“Why?”
“Because if this is what I think it is, your baby isn't just valuable to your husband.”
He paused.
“Your baby may be valuable to the entire family.”
That afternoon, my husband's attorney sent me a letter.
A divorce petition.
I read the first page.
Then the second.
Then the third.
He was accusing me of emotional instability.
Neglect.
Infidelity.
Domestic aggression.
And an attempt to abduct our unborn child.
I stared at the pages.
My husband had prepared this before the attack.
The garden hadn't been an impulsive act.
It had been part of his plan.
He wanted me injured.
He wanted me frightened.
He wanted evidence that I was unstable.
He wanted custody.
And now I understood why.
I looked at Detective Brooks.
“I want to fight.”
He nodded.
“You're going to.”
“No.”
I shook my head.
“I want to destroy the story he's building.”
That night, I made one decision.
I would stop hiding.
Every message.
Every recording.
Every financial document.
Every threat.
Every lie.
I would expose all of it.
May you like
And if my husband wanted a war—
I would give him one.
