Chapter 1 - THE SILENCE

The first thing I noticed was not the pain.

It was the silence.

My husband had stopped laughing.

For forty-seven minutes, his voice had filled our backyard with threats, accusations, and cruel little jokes. Now there was only the sound of water running through the broken hose connection and my own ragged breathing.

I pressed both hands against my stomach.

“Please,” I whispered.

Nothing.

The baby had been moving only minutes earlier.

Then everything stopped.

Claire was still standing near the gate, my phone clutched in her hand.

“Stay with me,” she said.

My husband looked at her.

“Don't touch her.”

Claire ignored him.

She looked at the dispatcher on speakerphone.

“She is pregnant. She's been assaulted. Her husband was holding a wooden stick. She is partially buried in the ground.”

“I never hit her,” he snapped.

Claire's eyes didn't leave mine.

“Don't argue with him,” the dispatcher said. “Keep yourself safe. Help is on the way.”

My husband took one step toward Claire.

She took one step backward.

“You have the recording,” he said quietly.

“Yes.”

“You don't understand what you're hearing.”

“I understand enough.”

His jaw tightened.

Then sirens sounded somewhere beyond the neighborhood.

For the first time, fear appeared in his eyes.

Not fear for me.

Fear for himself.

Two police cruisers turned onto our street.

My husband looked at me.

“You did this.”

I couldn't answer.

My body was shaking too badly.

The officers rushed through the gate.

One immediately moved toward me.

“Ma'am, can you tell me your name?”

I tried.

Only a whisper came out.

“Emily.”

“Emily, we're going to get you out.”

The other officer restrained my husband.

He didn't resist.

That scared me.

He simply lowered his head and said, “My wife is unstable. She's been having pregnancy complications. She attacked me first.”

I closed my eyes.

There it was.

The story he'd been preparing for.

But he had forgotten one thing.

My phone was recording.

And Claire had it.

At the hospital, everything became bright lights and hurried footsteps.

A nurse cut away the muddy clothes around my legs.

Another placed monitors against my stomach.

“Heart rate is present,” someone said.

I nearly sobbed.

Present.

My baby was alive.

The doctor examined me carefully.

“Any abdominal pain?”

“Yes.”

“Bleeding?”

“No.”

“Contractions?”

“I don't know.”

The doctor looked at the monitor.

“We're going to keep you here for observation.”

I stared at the ceiling.

“Is my baby okay?”

“For now, the heartbeat looks reassuring.”

For now.

Those two words stayed with me.

A police officer came into the room.

“Mrs. Carter?”

I turned.

“My husband?”

“He's been taken into custody.”

My chest tightened.

“What happens now?”

“We're going to need your statement.”

I looked toward Claire.

She was sitting beside the window.

“You have the recording?”

She nodded.

“The entire thing.”

The officer's expression changed.

“How long?”

“Forty-seven minutes.”

He looked at me.

“Does it contain threats?”

I swallowed.

“Yes.”

“Did he know he was being recorded?”

“No.”

“That may be very important.”

I closed my eyes.

For years, I had protected him.

I had explained away his behavior.

He was stressed.

He was tired.

He was angry.

He loved me.

He apologized.

He promised.

Then he did it again.

But tonight, something inside me had finally broken.

Not my spirit.

My fear.

I was no longer afraid of what would happen if I told the truth.

I was afraid of what would happen if I didn't.

Two hours later, the detective arrived.

His name was Daniel Brooks.

He didn't sit too close.

He placed a folder on his lap.

“Your husband says you attempted to leave him and planned to take the baby.”

I said nothing.

“He claims you became violent when he confronted you.”

I almost laughed.

Almost.

Instead, I asked, “Did you listen to the recording?”

“Yes.”

“And?”

He opened the folder.

“We listened to the entire thing.”

Claire looked at me.

Detective Brooks continued.

“There are several statements that concern us.”

“Several?”

He nodded.

“He threatened to prevent you from leaving. He discussed your sister. He mentioned your documents.”

My stomach turned.

“He knew about my documents?”

“Yes.”

I looked at Claire.

She understood immediately.

My escape plan wasn't supposed to be known.

Nobody knew.

Except my husband.

And one other person.

My sister.

Detective Brooks leaned forward.

“Mrs. Carter, we need to ask you something.”

“What?”

“Were you planning to leave him tonight?”

I hesitated.

“Yes.”

“Why?”

I looked down at my hands.

Because I was finally ready.

Because I had packed a small bag.

Because my sister had arranged a place for me.

Because I had copied every important document.

Because three nights earlier, I had found something on my husband's laptop that changed everything.

Something I hadn't told anyone.

Not even Claire.

I looked up.

“I found evidence that my husband has been planning something involving my baby.”

Detective Brooks became completely still.

“What kind of evidence?”

I swallowed.

“I don't know exactly what it means.”

“But you saved it?”

“Yes.”

“Where?”

I looked toward Claire.

Then back at the detective.

“Not here.”

“Where is it?”

I whispered the answer.

“In a safe deposit box.”

My husband's.

Detective Brooks closed the folder.

“Then we're going to need a warrant.”

I stared at him.

“For what?”

May you like

He looked directly into my eyes.

“For the box.”
