Chapter 9 - THE WOMAN WHO WAS NEVER DEAD

We found her three hours later.
Not in a hospital.
Not in another country.
Not hiding in some remote town.
She was living less than forty miles from me.
Under a different name.
Carter wanted to bring her in immediately.
Samuel insisted we approach carefully.
"If she survived for decades without being discovered, there's a reason."
Michael agreed.
I did too.
We arrived at a small house just before dawn.
An elderly woman opened the door.
The moment she saw me, she began crying.
I stared at her.
Something inside me recognized her before my mind could.
Her eyes.
My eyes.
She whispered,
"Emma."
My computer wasn't with me.
I couldn't answer.
I simply stared.
She reached for my hand.
I let her.
Her fingers trembled.
"I'm sorry."
I wanted to pull away.
Instead, I sat down.
For the first time in my life, I looked at my mother.
"Why?"
She began crying.
"I was told you were dead."
Michael stared at her.
"What?"
She looked at him.
"Your father believed someone was trying to destroy the company."
Michael shook his head.
"He told us you died."
"He was trying to protect you."
"From whom?"
She looked toward Samuel.
"Thomas."
Samuel's expression hardened.
"What did Thomas know?"
"Everything."
She explained that my father had discovered the hidden financial network years earlier.
Thomas wasn't merely an accountant.
He had been working for a private group that acquired valuable technology through intimidation, fraud, and corporate manipulation.
My father's refusal made him a target.
Then came the part that changed everything.
"Thomas didn't start it."
Samuel asked,
"Who did?"
My mother looked at me.
"Your father."
Everyone froze.
Michael stepped backward.
"What?"
She shook her head.
"Not the way you think."
My father had originally created the hidden trust to protect our family.
But someone inside his organization betrayed him.
That person used the trust as a secret financial pipeline.
When my father discovered it, he tried to shut it down.
That's when the threats began.
He staged my mother's death.
He sent Michael away.
And he built the first layer of protections around me.
But he made one mistake.
He trusted Thomas.
Thomas eventually turned against him.
My mother continued.
"Thomas believed your father had hidden a fortune."
Samuel asked,
"Did he?"
She looked at me.
"Yes."
I felt my heart pound.
"Where?"
She pointed toward me.
"Inside you."
Samuel frowned.
She explained.
My father had placed controlling rights to several revolutionary patents into a trust that could only be activated through my biometric identity.
The fortune everyone was fighting over wasn't simply money.
It was intellectual property worth tens of billions.
And the trust had one final safeguard.
If I died through suspicious circumstances, the assets would be frozen permanently.
David could never inherit them.
Thomas knew that.
So he created a false trust.
He convinced David that my death would make him rich.
David believed him.
But there was another problem.
"Who ordered the poisoning?" Carter asked.
My mother looked at me.
"Thomas."
"But he's dead."
"He wasn't acting alone."
Michael stepped closer.
"Who was above him?"
My mother closed her eyes.
"I never saw his face."
"Then how do you know?"
She looked at me.
"Because he contacted me."
Samuel leaned forward.
"When?"
"Yesterday."
The room became silent.
Carter immediately asked,
"What did he say?"
My mother whispered:
"He said Emma must die before the truth comes out."
I stared at her.
"Did he identify himself?"
She nodded.
"Yes."
"Who?"
She looked directly at me.
Then she said the name.
"David's father."
I froze.
David's father had supposedly died sixteen years ago.
My mother shook her head.
"He is alive."
Michael whispered,
"Then where is he?"
My mother pointed toward the window.
"Closer than you think."
A car suddenly stopped outside.
Carter rushed to the window.
The vehicle accelerated away.
He ran outside.
A few seconds later, he returned holding an envelope.
It had been pushed underneath the front door.
Samuel opened it.
Inside was a single photograph.
David's father stood beside Thomas.
Beside them was Robert Hale.
And behind them was a fourth man.
A man I recognized.
My former chief financial officer.
A man I had trusted for twenty years.
My mother whispered:
"He's the one who started everything."
Then my phone rang.
David.
I answered.
His voice was barely audible.
"Emma..."
"Listen carefully."
I said nothing.
"They're going to kill me."
I stared at Samuel.
David continued:
"I know who the real mastermind is."
May you like
Then he whispered:
"And you are going to hate me when I tell you."
