Chapter 8 - THE MAN IN THE PHOTOGRAPH

The photograph was taken eleven years ago.

I remembered that day perfectly.

The white dress.

The flowers.

The music.

David crying during the ceremony.

Everyone had believed he was overwhelmed by love.

Now I looked at the same photograph and saw something else.

A stranger.

Standing behind the guests.

Watching me.

Michael enlarged the image.

The man's face became clearer.

Carter recognized him first.

"Robert Hale."

Samuel looked at him.

"Who is that?"

Carter's expression darkened.

"Former federal contractor."

Michael nodded.

"He disappeared after my accident."

Samuel looked at me.

"Did you know him?"

I typed:

No.

Michael stared at the photograph.

"He worked for Thomas."

Carter asked,

"Doing what?"

"Security."

Carter studied the image.

"He was at your wedding."

Michael nodded.

"Because Thomas wanted to monitor Emma."

I felt cold.

My entire marriage had been surrounded by people I didn't know were watching me.

Then Carter received a call.

He listened.

His expression changed.

"Where?"

A pause.

"Understood."

He hung up.

"Robert Hale has been found."

"Alive?"

Carter shook his head.

"Dead."

The same method as Thomas.

Same location.

Same brass key.

Same number.

318.

Samuel looked at me.

"Your vault."

I typed:

There are two compartments.

Michael frowned.

"Two?"

"Yes."

Samuel understood.

"317 and 318."

I typed:

317 contains business documents.

"And 318?"

I hesitated.

Personal records.

Michael looked worried.

"What personal records?"

I stared at the screen.

My father's files.

Silence.

My father had died when I was twenty-two.

He had been the first person to teach me how to build a business.

But there had always been one strange thing about his death.

He had left no explanation.

No letter.

No warning.

Only a sealed envelope addressed to me.

I had never opened it.

Because he had instructed me not to until I turned forty.

I was forty-one now.

The envelope was inside Vault 318.

Michael looked at me.

"Then we need it."

Carter arranged for the vault to be opened under police supervision.

The following evening, we entered the secure facility.

My fingerprints opened the first lock.

My eye scan opened the second.

Then came the final lock.

A six-digit code.

I entered it.

The vault opened.

Inside were dozens of boxes.

Financial records.

Patent documents.

Photographs.

Letters.

And the sealed envelope.

My hands shook.

Samuel opened it carefully.

Inside was a handwritten letter from my father.

I read it slowly.

My father had known about Thomas.

He had known about the hidden money.

He had known that someone would eventually try to take control of the company.

But the final paragraph was the one that destroyed everything I believed.

Emma, if you are reading this, someone has already betrayed you.

I continued.

Do not trust the person who claims to love you most.

My eyes moved down.

Then stopped.

The next sentence was worse.

Your mother knows the truth.

I stared at the page.

My mother.

She had died when I was twelve.

Or so I had always believed.

Michael whispered,

"Emma..."

I couldn't move.

Samuel turned the page.

There was another note.

Your mother did not die.

The room went silent.

Carter looked at Michael.

"Is that possible?"

Michael shook his head.

"I thought she died."

I stared at the handwriting.

My father's final words continued.

If they tell you she is dead, do not believe them.

Then another line.

She is the only person who knows who started this.

I dropped the letter.

For forty years, I had believed I was an orphan.

Now I discovered that my mother might be alive.

And before we could process it, Michael's phone rang.

Unknown number.

He answered.

Nobody spoke.

Then a woman's voice whispered:

"Emma."

I froze.

Michael looked at me.

The voice continued.

May you like

"I am your mother."

Then the call ended.
