Chapter 6 - THE SECRET VAULT

The police wanted me nowhere near Chicago.

Samuel disagreed.

"We need to know what Michael wants."

Carter shook his head.

"Absolutely not."

Samuel remained calm.

"My client doesn't have to physically go."

Everyone looked at him.

"We can use the vault."

I stared at Samuel.

He understood immediately.

"The vault has biometric access."

I moved my eyes.

Only me.

"Exactly."

Carter looked frustrated.

"So how do we get inside?"

Samuel answered:

"We don't."

He looked at me.

"We let Michael believe we are trying."

That became the plan.

Within six hours, news spread through the house that I was being transported to Chicago.

It was a lie.

I remained in a private medical facility under police protection.

David was moved to another location.

Jessica agreed to cooperate.

And Samuel arranged for a decoy vehicle to leave the city.

But Michael wasn't stupid.

He knew.

At 2:14 a.m., every phone in the facility received the same message.

YOU ARE STILL LYING TO ME.

Then the lights went out.

Again.

Carter immediately ordered everyone to stay where they were.

My room became surrounded by officers.

Then someone knocked.

Three slow knocks.

Everyone froze.

Carter raised his weapon.

"Who's there?"

No answer.

Another three knocks.

Samuel whispered,

"Don't open it."

The door opened anyway.

A man stepped inside.

Tall.

Gray jacket.

Dark hair streaked with silver.

He looked older than the photographs I remembered.

But I knew him immediately.

Michael.

My brother.

Alive.

He looked at me.

For several seconds, neither of us moved.

Then he smiled.

"Hello, Emma."

I hadn't heard my name in his voice for twelve years.

My eyes filled with tears.

Samuel stepped between us.

"Stop."

Michael didn't move.

"I didn't come to hurt her."

Carter aimed his weapon.

"Hands where I can see them."

Michael slowly raised his hands.

"I'm unarmed."

Carter approached.

"You're under arrest."

Michael smiled.

"For what?"

"Thomas Reed's murder."

Michael's expression changed.

"I didn't kill Thomas."

Carter frowned.

"Then who did?"

Michael looked at me.

"Your husband."

Everyone turned.

David wasn't there.

Carter stared.

"Explain."

Michael reached into his pocket.

Carter immediately raised his weapon.

"Slowly."

Michael removed a flash drive.

"Thomas was going to expose everything."

He placed it on the floor.

"David killed him."

Samuel picked up the drive.

"What is on it?"

"Everything."

I typed:

Why did you disappear?

Michael looked at me.

"Because someone tried to kill me."

My heart stopped.

"Who?"

He looked at Samuel.

"Thomas."

Samuel froze.

Michael continued.

"He was working for someone."

"Who?"

Michael's eyes returned to me.

"Someone inside your company."

I typed:

Who?

Michael shook his head.

"I don't know."

"Then why come back?"

He looked at me with something like regret.

"Because I found out they were coming for you."

I typed:

Why poison me?

Michael's voice became quiet.

"Because your death unlocks something."

Samuel immediately understood.

"The inheritance."

Michael nodded.

"Not the money."

He looked at me.

"The patents."

I stared.

My patents.

The ones that had made my company billions.

Michael continued.

"There is a clause buried inside the original trust."

Samuel frowned.

"What clause?"

"If Emma dies without a surviving heir, control of the patents transfers."

"To whom?"

Michael looked toward the door.

"David."

Samuel's face went pale.

"No."

Michael nodded.

"David knew."

I felt something break inside me.

All those years.

The marriage.

The poisoning.

The fake devotion.

It had never been about the inheritance alone.

David wanted control of the technology that made my fortune possible.

Michael stepped closer.

"But there's one thing he doesn't know."

I typed:

What?

Michael smiled sadly.

"You aren't the only person who changed the trust."

My eyes widened.

He reached into his jacket.

And removed an old photograph.

It showed me and Michael as teenagers.

On the back was handwriting.

Mine.

A sentence I had completely forgotten.

If anyone ever comes for us, trust the person who disappeared.

Michael looked at me.

"You wrote that."

I stared at the photograph.

Then I remembered.

A memory I hadn't thought about in twelve years.

A secret.

A promise.

And suddenly I understood why Michael had survived.

He hadn't abandoned me.

May you like

He had been hiding.

From the same person who was now trying to finish what they started.
