Chapter 5 - THE FATHER I NEVER KNEW

I had spent my entire life believing my father had died before I was born.

That was the story my mother had told everyone.

That was the story I had accepted.

Now Helena had destroyed it with one sentence.

Your father.

I stared at Alessandro.

“Is my father alive?”

He didn't answer.

That was answer enough.

“Tell me.”

Daniel stepped forward.

“We need to be careful.”

“I don't care.”

“You should.”

“I've spent my entire life believing a lie.”

Alessandro finally spoke.

“Your father is alive.”

My knees nearly gave out.

“Where?”

“He's been living under another name.”

“Why?”

“Because your mother asked him to disappear.”

“From whom?”

“The Hales.”

I looked at the key in my hand.

“My father knows about the account.”

“Yes.”

“Then find him.”

Alessandro nodded.

Three hours later, we were driving through a quiet rural town.

The house was small.

White siding.

A porch.

A garden.

Nothing about it suggested secrets.

Alessandro knocked.

No answer.

He knocked again.

An elderly man opened the door.

The moment he saw me, his face collapsed.

He whispered my name.

Not my married name.

My childhood name.

The name my mother had given me.

I started crying.

“You're my father.”

He looked at me.

“Yes.”

I slapped him.

The sound echoed across the porch.

He didn't defend himself.

“You let me believe you were dead.”

“I know.”

“You watched me marry them.”

“I tried to stop it.”

“You didn't.”

“I couldn't.”

“Why?”

His eyes filled with tears.

“Because your mother made me promise.”

“Promise what?”

“To stay away from you.”

“Why?”

“Because Raul had threatened to kill you.”

I froze.

My father stepped aside.

“Come inside.”

We entered.

On the wall were photographs.

My mother.

Me as a baby.

My father.

My chest hurt.

He sat down.

“I loved your mother.”

“Then why did she die alone?”

His face twisted.

“I was in another state when it happened.”

“Did Raul kill her?”

“I don't know.”

“Do you know who did?”

He looked at me.

“Yes.”

My breath stopped.

“Who?”

He lowered his voice.

“Your mother's lawyer.”

I stared.

“What?”

“He was working for Raul.”

“Why?”

“Because your mother had discovered the theft.”

He pointed toward a locked cabinet.

“She had evidence.”

The key in my hand suddenly felt heavier.

“The account?”

He nodded.

“The account contains everything.”

I looked at him.

“What everything?”

“Payments.”

“To whom?”

“Judges.”

“Judges?”

“Police officers.”

My blood ran cold.

“Politicians.”

I couldn't speak.

“Your mother had proof that Raul had built his empire by buying people.”

He paused.

“And Victor was supposed to inherit all of it.”

I stared at him.

“Victor?”

“Yes.”

“Why did he marry me?”

My father closed his eyes.

“Because your mother changed her will.”

My heart stopped.

“What did she change?”

“She made you the controlling beneficiary.”

Everything suddenly made sense.

Victor's obsession with my finances.

His insistence that I sign documents.

His rage whenever I refused.

The constant pressure.

The isolation.

The cruelty.

It hadn't been random.

It had been a plan.

My father looked at me.

“Your husband didn't marry you for love.”

I whispered:

“I know.”

He shook his head.

“No.”

His voice broke.

“You don't understand.”

“What?”

“Victor was never supposed to marry you.”

I stared.

“Who was?”

My father looked toward the window.

“The man who originally had the contract.”

“Who?”

He said the name.

I stopped breathing.

Because I knew it.

It was the same name that had appeared on my mother's documents.

The same man whose disappearance had never been explained.

And suddenly I understood.

Victor had stolen someone else's plan.

May you like

And if that man was still alive—

he would want everything back.
