Chapter 3 - THE WOMAN WHO KNEW THE TRUTH

Victor was arrested before noon.

The news spread quickly.

By evening, reporters were already outside the hospital.

I watched them from behind the curtains.

Cameras.

Microphones.

Questions.

“Was the assault planned?”

“Is Victor Hale being charged?”

“Did his family witness the attack?”

I closed the curtain.

I didn't want the world.

I wanted answers.

Daniel entered.

“Victor's attorney contacted us.”

I laughed bitterly.

“Already?”

“Money moves quickly when someone's reputation is collapsing.”

“What did he want?”

“A private settlement.”

I stared at him.

“For what?”

“To keep the case out of court.”

I shook my head.

“No.”

Daniel smiled faintly.

“I expected that.”

He placed a document on the table.

“This is a temporary protective order.”

I signed it.

Then another.

And another.

Every signature felt like a door closing behind me.

For years, I had been afraid of Victor.

Now I was learning something terrifying.

He had been afraid of me.

He just hadn't known it yet.

That evening, Alessandro returned.

This time, he brought someone with him.

A woman.

Late fifties.

Dark hair streaked with gray.

She looked at me.

Her eyes filled with tears.

“Oh, sweetheart.”

I frowned.

“Who are you?”

She slowly sat down.

“My name is Evelyn Carter.”

I had never heard the name.

She looked toward Alessandro.

“Tell her.”

He nodded.

Evelyn reached into her purse.

She pulled out an old photograph.

She handed it to me.

I stared.

My mother.

Young.

Smiling.

Standing beside Evelyn.

And beside them was Alessandro.

I turned the picture over.

There was handwriting on the back.

Three names.

And a date.

The year I was born.

“Why do you have this?”

Evelyn wiped her eyes.

“Because your mother asked me to keep it.”

“Why?”

“Because she knew she might not survive.”

My chest tightened.

“What happened to her?”

Evelyn took a breath.

“Your mother discovered that Raul Hale was stealing from her company.”

I stared.

“Raul?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“He created shell companies.”

Daniel looked at Alessandro.

“That's in the files.”

Evelyn nodded.

“But your mother confronted him.”

“What happened?”

“She threatened to expose him.”

I felt cold.

“And then?”

Evelyn looked at me.

“Three weeks later, your mother died.”

Silence.

I couldn't speak.

“Police said it was a car accident,” I whispered.

“It wasn't.”

My hands began shaking.

“Then what was it?”

Evelyn looked at Alessandro.

He answered.

“Brake failure.”

I stared at him.

“Are you saying Raul killed my mother?”

“We don't know who caused it,” Alessandro said carefully.

“But we know the brakes were tampered with.”

My heart pounded.

“Why didn't anyone tell me?”

“Because you were six years old.”

I closed my eyes.

Suddenly, the strange pieces of my childhood made sense.

The relatives who never spoke about my mother.

The locked boxes.

The family friend who disappeared.

The sudden move.

The stories about an accident that nobody wanted to discuss.

Then I remembered something.

“My mother left me a necklace.”

Evelyn's eyes widened.

“What necklace?”

“A gold necklace. She gave it to me before she died.”

“Do you still have it?”

“I think so.”

Daniel stood immediately.

“Where?”

“At the Hale house.”

Everyone went silent.

I looked at Alessandro.

“Why?”

He didn't answer.

Evelyn did.

“Because your mother hid something inside it.”

My pulse quickened.

“What?”

Evelyn whispered:

“The original trust key.”

That night, the Hale mansion became the most dangerous place in the city.

And somewhere inside it was the one thing that could destroy Victor's entire family.
