Chapter 2 - THE HIDDEN CONTRACT

When I woke, the ceiling above me was white.
Too white.
For several seconds, I didn't know where I was.
Then I heard the monitor.
Beep.
Beep.
Beep.
I turned my head.
A nurse noticed.
“She's awake.”
Another nurse rushed over.
“How are you feeling?”
I tried to speak.
Nothing came out.
My throat was dry.
“Water,” I whispered.
She helped me drink.
Then I remembered.
Victor.
The cane.
The kitchen.
The baby.
My eyes widened.
“My baby.”
The nurse placed a hand gently on my shoulder.
“The obstetrician is coming.”
“Is my baby alive?”
She hesitated.
That hesitation terrified me.
“Please.”
She looked at the monitor.
“Your baby's heartbeat is strong right now.”
I closed my eyes.
A sob escaped me.
Strong.
The word became everything.
Strong.
A few minutes later, the doctor entered.
She examined me carefully.
“You've suffered significant trauma,” she said. “We are monitoring you and the baby closely.”
“Will my baby survive?”
“We don't know yet.”
My heart sank.
“But right now,” she continued, “there is a heartbeat. That's what we're focusing on.”
I nodded.
Then the door opened.
The silver-haired man entered.
He was alone.
I recognized him immediately.
“Mr. Moretti.”
He nodded.
“Call me Alessandro.”
I stared at him.
“Why did you come?”
He pulled a chair beside my bed.
“Because you asked me to.”
“I barely know you.”
“That isn't entirely true.”
My stomach tightened.
“What does that mean?”
He looked at me for several seconds.
“Your mother knew me.”
I froze.
“My mother?”
He nodded.
“Before she died.”
I couldn't breathe.
“My mother never mentioned you.”
“She couldn't.”
“Why?”
“Because your mother's death wasn't an accident.”
The room seemed to tilt.
I stared at him.
“What?”
He leaned forward.
“Your mother discovered something about the Hale family.”
My fingers tightened around the blanket.
“What did she discover?”
Alessandro didn't answer immediately.
Instead, he placed a thin black folder on my bedside table.
“This belongs to you.”
I looked at it.
“What is it?”
“A contract.”
I opened it.
The first page contained my name.
My marriage date.
Victor's name.
Then another name.
My mother's.
My blood ran cold.
“Why is my mother on this?”
Alessandro said quietly:
“Because your mother signed an agreement twenty-two years ago.”
I stared at the document.
The words blurred.
“What agreement?”
“To protect you.”
“From whom?”
He looked toward the door.
“From them.”
My eyes moved back to the contract.
There were pages of legal language.
Inheritance clauses.
Trust provisions.
Property transfers.
Confidentiality agreements.
Then I saw a sentence highlighted in yellow.
My hands began shaking.
“If the beneficiary marries into the Hale family, all concealed assets shall immediately transfer into the beneficiary's independent trust.”
I stared.
“What does that mean?”
Alessandro leaned back.
“It means Victor's family has spent years trying to control something they never owned.”
“What?”
“Your inheritance.”
I laughed.
Not because it was funny.
Because it sounded impossible.
“I don't have an inheritance.”
“You do.”
“How much?”
He looked directly at me.
“Enough to make your husband's family dangerous.”
My mouth went dry.
“How much?”
“Your mother left you controlling interest in a company.”
I stared at him.
“What company?”
He said the name.
I stopped breathing.
I knew it.
Everyone knew it.
It was one of the largest privately held logistics companies on the East Coast.
I had grown up believing my mother had worked as an accountant.
Nothing more.
“You're telling me my mother owned that?”
“She founded it.”
My eyes filled with tears.
“Why didn't she tell me?”
“Because she was trying to keep you alive.”
The door opened.
A lawyer entered.
Alessandro stood.
“This is Daniel Mercer.”
The lawyer placed another folder on the table.
“Mrs. Hale, your husband has been lying to you about your finances since before the wedding.”
I stared at him.
“Why?”
Daniel opened the folder.
“Because he needed you dependent.”
He turned the first page.
Bank statements.
Then another.
Property records.
Then another.
Corporate transfers.
My hands trembled.
“This can't be real.”
“It is.”
“How long?”
“Eight years.”
Eight years.
My entire marriage.
Daniel looked at me.
“Victor has been moving money out of accounts connected to your inheritance.”
“Can he?”
“No.”
“Then why?”
“Because he believed you would never find out.”
Alessandro's phone rang.
He answered.
His expression changed.
“What happened?”
He listened.
Then slowly looked at me.
“The police have arrived at the Hale house.”
My heart raced.
“Why?”
Daniel answered.
“Because Nora's video has been recovered.”
I swallowed.
“What are they going to do?”
Alessandro's expression hardened.
“They're going to arrest your husband.”
I should have felt relieved.
Instead, I felt something else.
A strange emptiness.
Because I knew this wasn't the end.
It was only the beginning.

And somewhere inside that house, Victor's family still had one secret they hadn't told me.
A secret my mother had died protecting.
