CHAPTER 4 – THE MAN WHO CAME BACK

The black pickup truck roared toward the driveway.

Its engine screamed through the quiet neighborhood as neighbors peeked through their curtains, drawn by the flashing police lights.

Officer Herrera shouted.

"Everyone back!"

The officers rushed into position.

Weapons drawn.

But the truck didn't slow down.

It slammed through Patricia's decorative front gate, sending twisted metal flying across the lawn.

Then—

SCREECH!

The tires locked.

The truck stopped only a few feet from the officers.

For a heartbeat...

Everything was silent.

Then the driver's door opened.

Javier Morales stepped out.

He wore dusty work boots, faded jeans, and a brown leather jacket splattered with mud.

His face was calm.

Far too calm.

He looked first at Patricia.

Then at Daniel.

Finally...

Toward the ambulance disappearing in the distance.

"So..."

he said quietly.

"You found him."

Daniel charged forward.

Three officers grabbed him before he could reach Javier.

"LET ME GO!"

"You buried my son alive!"

Javier didn't even flinch.

"He was alive."

Daniel stared at him in disbelief.

"You say that like it earns you mercy?"

Javier sighed.

"You don't understand."

"No," Daniel growled.

"I understand perfectly."

"You stole a seven-year-old child."

"You locked him beneath a floor."

"You let his parents believe he was dead."

Javier slowly shook his head.

"No."

"I saved him."

Every officer froze.

Mariana looked horrified.

"What did you just say?"

Javier smiled faintly.

"I saved Leo."

Officer Herrera stepped closer.

"Explain yourself."

Javier looked around at everyone gathered outside the house.

"You've all decided I'm the monster."

"But none of you know why I took him."

Daniel laughed bitterly.

"Because you wanted money."

Javier looked at him with pity.

"No."

"The ransom idea came later."

"The first reason..."

"...was you."

Daniel's face hardened.

"What are you talking about?"

"You remember the warehouse fire three years ago?"

Daniel frowned.

Of course he remembered.

One of his logistics warehouses had caught fire after faulty wiring sparked an explosion.

Two employees had died.

The investigation ruled it an accident.

Javier spoke quietly.

"It wasn't an accident."

Silence.

"I found proof."

"I discovered someone inside your company had been stealing fuel and covering it up."

"They started the fire to destroy the records."

Daniel stared at him.

"That's impossible."

"I turned everything over to management."

"You trusted the wrong people."

Javier reached slowly into his jacket.

Several officers raised their weapons.

"Hands where I can see them!"

"It's okay," Javier said calmly.

"I'm not reaching for a gun."

He pulled out a worn flash drive.

"I've carried this for three years."

"It contains every document."

"Every payment."

"Every recording."

"The people responsible realized I knew."

Officer Herrera accepted the flash drive carefully.

"And?"

Javier looked directly at Daniel.

"They threatened everyone connected to me."

"My wife."

"My son."

"And eventually..."

"...Leo."

Mariana shook her head.

"No..."

"They told me if I went to the police..."

"...your son would disappear forever."

Daniel's breathing became uneven.

"So your solution..."

"...was to kidnap him yourself?"

Javier lowered his head.

"I believed if no one knew where Leo was..."

"...they couldn't reach him."

The words hung in the cold night air.

Patricia burst into tears.

"I begged him to stop."

"I begged him to tell the truth."

"He kept saying it would only be for a few days."

"But every time he wanted to release Leo..."

"...the threats came again."

"So he kept hiding him."

"Again."

"And again."

"Until..."

She looked toward the house.

"...there was nowhere left."

Daniel's fists clenched.

"You could have brought him to me."

"You could have trusted me."

Javier nodded slowly.

"I know."

"I made the worst decision of my life."

"I told myself I was protecting him."

"But I became the very thing I feared."

Suddenly, Herrera's radio crackled loudly.

"Unit Twelve..."

"We've analyzed the flash drive."

Herrera grabbed the radio.

"What did you find?"

The dispatcher answered immediately.

"The documents are authentic."

"There are financial transfers, surveillance videos, and voice recordings."

Herrera frowned.

"From whom?"

The dispatcher paused.

Then spoke one name.

Everyone—including Javier—went completely still.

"The evidence points to..."

"...Carlos Rivas."

Daniel's heart stopped.

Carlos.

His own business partner.

The man who had stood beside him every single day since Leo disappeared.

The same man who had helped organize search parties...

Held Mariana while she cried...

Promised to help find Leo...

And who was, at that very moment...

May you like

Already on his way to the hospital where Leo had just been taken.
