CHAPTER 3 – THE TRUTH UNDER THE PERFECT HOUSE

The ambulance doors slammed shut.
Leo lay inside beneath warm blankets while paramedics worked frantically around him.
An oxygen mask covered his small face.
His tiny fingers never let go of Daniel's hand until the doors finally closed.
"I'll see you at the hospital," Daniel whispered.
"I promise."
Leo managed the faintest nod.
Then the ambulance disappeared into the night.
Patricia sat on the curb in handcuffs.
The flashing red-and-blue lights reflected across her tear-streaked face.
She looked nothing like the confident woman who had welcomed them into her beautiful new home.
Officer Miguel Herrera crouched beside her.
"You have one opportunity to help your nephew."
"Tell us everything."
Patricia stared at the ground.
"I didn't kidnap him."
Daniel spun around.
"What did you say?"
"I said..." she whispered.
"I didn't take Leo."
Mariana exploded.
"HE WAS UNDER YOUR FLOOR!"
"I KNOW!"
Patricia screamed the words back, startling everyone.
"I know where he was!"
"But I wasn't the one who put him there."
Silence settled over the driveway.
Even the officers exchanged uncertain glances.
Herrera folded his notebook.
"Then who did?"
Patricia closed her eyes.
"My husband."
Daniel felt the air leave his lungs.
"Javier?"
She nodded.
"He found Leo."
"No," Daniel corrected coldly.
"He kidnapped him."
Patricia shook her head.
"It wasn't supposed to happen like that."
Ten months earlier...
Javier Morales had been drowning in debt.
His construction company was collapsing.
Loan sharks were threatening him.
He believed Daniel's successful logistics business was the answer to everything.
"He asked you for money," Patricia said quietly.
"You refused."
Daniel remembered.
It had happened just weeks before Leo disappeared.
Javier wanted nearly two million pesos to save his company.
Daniel had declined.
Not because he didn't love his brother-in-law.
Because Javier had already lied about money twice before.
"I told him I'd help him find a financial adviser."
Patricia nodded.
"But he wanted cash."
"When you refused..."
"...he decided to make you desperate enough to pay."
Mariana covered her mouth.
"A ransom."
Patricia nodded again.
"That was the plan."
"But everything went wrong."
According to Patricia, Javier had taken Leo from the backyard while Daniel and Mariana were inside preparing lunch.
He hid the boy temporarily inside an abandoned warehouse outside Guadalajara.
But before the ransom demand could be sent, national news exploded with Leo's disappearance.
Police checkpoints appeared across the state.
Television stations broadcast Leo's photograph every hour.
The case became too visible.
Too dangerous.
Javier panicked.
Instead of releasing the child...
...he moved him.
Again.
And again.
Until finally, three months later, after Patricia purchased the house in Querétaro...
he built the hidden crawl space beneath the brand-new hardwood floor.
Daniel stared at the immaculate house.
The fresh paint.
The expensive furniture.
The polished floors.
His son had been imprisoned beneath every family dinner.
Every birthday celebration.
Every holiday.
Only inches below their feet.
"You knew," Daniel whispered.
Patricia burst into tears.
"I found out after the floor was finished."
"I wanted to call the police."
"But Javier said..."
She couldn't finish.
Herrera spoke gently.
"What did he say?"
"He said if I talked..."
"...he'd kill Leo."
"And then he'd kill Inés too."
Daniel's anger faltered.
For the first time that night...
he saw not only a guilty woman—
but a terrified one.
"Why didn't you tell me after he disappeared?" Daniel asked.
Patricia looked at him through streaming tears.
"Because every day I believed..."
"...tomorrow I'd find a way to save him."
"But tomorrow kept becoming another tomorrow."
Mariana shook her head.
"So you let him suffer."
Patricia broke completely.
"I know."
"I know."
"I'll never forgive myself."
At that moment, another police cruiser sped into the driveway.
An officer stepped out holding a phone.
"Herrera!"
"We've traced the number that sent Patricia the message."
Herrera looked up sharply.
"Where is it?"
The officer swallowed.
"The phone is moving."
Daniel frowned.
"Moving where?"
The officer looked directly at Patricia.
"It's heading here."
Patricia's face drained of all color.
"No..."
She whispered.
"He's coming back."
A black pickup truck turned slowly onto the quiet street.
Its headlights cut through the darkness.
Behind the wheel...
May you like
Javier smiled.
And then he accelerated straight toward the house.
