Chapter 9 - THE BLOODLINE THEY TRIED TO HIDE

For a moment, I forgot how to breathe.
The words didn't make sense.
They entered my mind, but they refused to connect.
Miles is the last surviving member of the Vale family.
I looked at Adrian Vale.
Then at Emily.
Then at my son sleeping peacefully upstairs.
My baby.
My eight-month-old boy.
The same child I had rocked at 3 a.m.
The same child whose first steps I was waiting for.
The same child who had grabbed my finger the first time I held him.
And now a stranger was standing in my house, telling me my son belonged to someone else.
"No."
The word came out quietly.
Then louder.
"No."
Adrian didn't react.
"You have every right to be angry."
"Angry?"
I stepped toward him.
"You walk into my house, after my family has been destroyed, and tell me my son is part of some secret family?"
"I understand how it sounds."
"You don't understand anything."
Detective Reed stepped between us.
"Everyone stays calm."
But calm was impossible.
Not anymore.
Because this wasn't just about betrayal.
It wasn't just about Emily.
It wasn't just about Ryan.
Someone had been moving pieces around my life like I was a person in a game.
And I hated that feeling.
"Explain."
I looked at Adrian.
"Right now."
He nodded.
"Eight months ago, my brother died."
Nobody spoke.
"My brother had a son."
He looked at Miles' room.
"That child was supposed to inherit everything connected to the Vale family."
I stared at him.
"You're saying Miles is your brother's son?"
Adrian looked at Emily.
"That is what she was told."
I turned.
"She?"
Emily looked like she was about to collapse.
"Grant..."
"Did you know?"
She didn't answer.
That was enough.
My chest tightened.
"You knew?"
"I knew there was a possibility."
"A possibility?"
My voice broke.
"You knew someone might know something about our son, and you said nothing?"
Tears rolled down her face.
"I was trying to protect him."
"No."
I shook my head.
"You were making decisions without me."
She looked away.
And that silence hurt more than anything.
Adrian spoke again.
"Emily was contacted because Ryan discovered the records."
I looked at him.
"What records?"
"The original hospital records."
The room went silent.
"Original?"
"Yes."
Adrian reached into his coat.
Detective Reed immediately moved.
"Slowly."
Adrian raised his hands.
"I am not here to hurt anyone."
He removed a folder.
Inside were documents.
Real documents.
Not photos.
Not messages.
Official papers.
He placed them on the table.
"I spent eight months trying to find the child."
I looked at him.
"Why?"
"Because someone tried to erase him."
My eyes moved to Miles' room.
"Who?"
Adrian's expression hardened.
"Someone inside my family."
A cold feeling moved through me.
"Who?"
"I don't know."
Another person saying those words.
But this time, it sounded different.
Because Adrian looked angry.
Not afraid.
"I only know someone paid Ryan to create confusion."
Detective Reed looked at him.
"Do you have proof?"
Adrian nodded.
"Yes."
He pulled out another document.
"A payment record."
The name on the paper made my blood run cold.
Ryan Carter.
My wife's brother.
Again.
The same man.
The same person.
The center of every secret.
"He was paid to hide the truth."
I looked at Emily.
"Did you know?"
She shook her head.
"No."
"Did you ever meet Adrian before tonight?"
"No."
Adrian looked at her.
"She's telling the truth."
I turned.
"How do you know?"
"Because Ryan was never trying to protect Emily."
He paused.
"He was protecting himself."
The room became quiet.
Then Adrian said:
"Ryan was afraid that if the truth came out, people would discover what he did before Miles was born."
"What did he do?"
Adrian looked at me.
"He tried to arrange a different future."
"What does that mean?"
"He wanted control of the Vale inheritance."
I stared.
"By using my son?"
"Yes."
The pieces started coming together.
The phone.
The threats.
The hospital.
The lies.
Ryan wasn't trying to expose Emily.
He was trying to control her.
He needed her scared.
He needed her silent.
And he needed me confused.
Then my phone rang.
Detective Reed looked.
"Unknown."
I answered.
Nobody spoke.
Then a familiar voice.
Ryan.
"You met Adrian."
My blood ran cold.
"Where are you?"
A laugh.
"Still asking the wrong questions, Grant."
"What do you want?"
"What I wanted from the beginning."
"Which is?"
Silence.
Then:
"Your family."
The call ended.
I looked at Adrian.
He was already reaching for his phone.
"What?"
He looked at the screen.
His face changed.
"What is it?"
He turned the phone around.
A message.
A photo.
Adrian's eyes widened.
Because the picture was not of me.
Not of Emily.
Not of Miles.
It was Tessa.
Outside.
Walking home from school.
The message below:
May you like
You found the baby.
Now let's see if you can protect the daughter.
