Chapter 8 - THE PERSON BEHIND THE PLAN

The next morning, I changed everything.
The locks.
The passwords.
The security system.
Everything.
Not because I wanted to.
Because someone had entered my life without permission.
And I needed to know who.
Tessa watched me from the stairs.
"Dad?"
I looked up.
"Yeah?"
"Are we moving?"
The question hurt.
Because kids notice everything.
They notice when adults whisper.
They notice when doors close.
They notice when home doesn't feel safe anymore.
"No."
I walked toward her.
"We're staying here."
"Is Mom leaving?"
I stopped.
I didn't know how to answer.
Because I didn't know myself.
"I don't know yet."
She nodded slowly.
Then:
"Are you still my dad?"
My heart broke.
I knelt down.
"Tessa."
"I'm serious."
She looked scared.
"Because everything feels different."
I held her hands.
"I am your dad today."
"I was your dad yesterday."
"And I will be your dad tomorrow."
She finally smiled a little.
Then she whispered:
"I saw Ryan before."
My expression changed.
"What?"
"At school."
"When?"
"Last week."
I stood.
"Why didn't you tell me?"
"Because Mom said not to."
My stomach tightened.
"What did she mean?"
Tessa looked uncomfortable.
"She said Uncle Ryan was helping our family."
Helping.
That word.
Another lie disguised as kindness.
I called Emily.
She answered immediately.
"Grant?"
"Did Ryan come near Tessa's school?"
Silence.
"Emily."
"I didn't know."
"That's not an answer."
She sighed.
"Yes."
My jaw tightened.
"When?"
"Last week."
"Why?"
"He wanted to talk."
"To a nine-year-old?"
"No."
Her voice changed.
"He wanted to talk to me."
I looked at Tessa.
"Why was she there?"
"I don't know."
There it was again.
But this time, I believed the fear behind it.
Not the excuse.
The fear.
"Emily, what did Ryan want?"
"He wanted me to convince you not to investigate."
"Why?"
"Because he knew you would find out."
"Find out what?"
She whispered:
"Who actually owns Vale Medical Services."
I frowned.
"What does that mean?"
"I found out yesterday."
"What?"
"Ryan doesn't work for them."
A cold feeling moved through me.
"Then who does?"
Emily hesitated.
Then she said:
"The man in the hospital video."
I looked at the screen.
The stranger.
The folder.
The agreement.
"Who is he?"
Emily looked terrified.
"Adrian Vale."
The name meant nothing to me.
But it meant something to her.
Because she looked like someone who had just opened a door she was trying to keep closed.
"Who is Adrian Vale?"
She whispered:
"The man who paid for Miles' medical bills."
I froze.
"What?"
"He paid anonymously."
"Why?"
"I don't know."
I stared at her.
"Emily."
She cried.
"Because he said the baby belonged to him."
The room went silent.
"What did you just say?"
She closed her eyes.
"He claimed Miles was connected to his family."
My heart stopped.
"Connected how?"
Before she could answer, my front door opened.
Everyone turned.
A man stood there.
Tall.
Wearing a dark suit.
Calm.
Confident.
Like he owned the room.
He looked directly at me.
Then at Emily.
Then at Miles.
And said:
"Finally."
Nobody moved.
The man stepped inside.
"My name is Adrian Vale."
Detective Reed reached for his badge.
"Sir, you need to step outside."
Adrian ignored him.
His eyes stayed on me.
"I know this is confusing."
I stepped forward.
"You think?"
He looked at Miles.
Then back at me.
"I came here because someone has been lying to both of us."
My fists tightened.
"Get out."
Adrian didn't move.
"Before you throw me out, you should know one thing."
"What?"
His expression became serious.
"Miles is not the secret."
A pause.
Then:
"The secret is why someone wanted him hidden."
Nobody spoke.
Adrian looked at Emily.
"Tell him what you promised."
Emily's face went white.
I turned toward her.
"What promise?"
She couldn't answer.
Adrian did.
"Your wife promised she would never tell you who the baby's biological family was."
My entire body went cold.
Then Adrian said the words that changed everything:
May you like
"Because Miles is the last surviving member of the Vale family."
