Chapter 3 - THE LIE SHE PRACTICED FOR MONTHS

For a few seconds, nobody moved.

Not me.

Not Emily.

Not even the house seemed to breathe.

The only sound was the quiet hum of the refrigerator behind us and the faint footsteps of my daughter upstairs.

Tessa.

My little girl.

The one person in this house who had told me the truth without even knowing she was doing it.

I stared at Emily.

The woman I had loved for eleven years.

The mother of my children.

The person I trusted more than anyone in the world.

And I waited for her to say something.

Anything.

A denial.

A misunderstanding.

A reasonable explanation.

But she didn't.

That silence was worse than any confession.

"Say something."

My voice sounded unfamiliar.

Emily looked at the floor.

"Grant..."

"No."

I shook my head.

"Don't say my name like that."

Her eyes filled with tears.

"Like what?"

"Like I'm supposed to comfort you."

She flinched.

And I hated that I noticed.

Because some part of me still cared.

That was the cruelest part.

Even when someone hurts you, your heart doesn't immediately stop loving them.

It takes time.

Sometimes too much time.

"Miles is your son," she whispered.

I looked at her.

"Then why did someone write that?"

She closed her eyes.

"I don't know."

"You don't know?"

I grabbed the phone from the table.

"You don't know who sent a message saying I don't know the baby isn't mine?"

"I know who sent it."

The words came out quietly.

But they hit harder than a scream.

I froze.

"Who?"

Emily didn't answer.

"Who?"

She sat down.

Her hands were shaking.

"It was Ryan."

My brother-in-law.

Again.

The same name.

The same person.

The same person who had been hiding behind the letter R.

I felt something inside me go cold.

"Why would Ryan say that?"

Emily wiped her face.

"Because he wants to hurt me."

"Why?"

She looked at me.

And for the first time, I saw something different.

Not guilt.

Fear.

Real fear.

"Because he knows something."

"What?"

She swallowed.

"I don't know how much he knows."

I stared at her.

"Emily, stop speaking in circles."

She took a deep breath.

"After Miles was born..."

She paused.

"I had complications."

I remembered.

The hospital.

The long nights.

The doctors.

The fear.

Miles had been born early.

He spent twelve days in the NICU.

I remembered standing beside the incubator, holding Emily's hand, praying that our son would be okay.

"I remember."

"During that time, I wasn't thinking clearly."

I felt my stomach tighten.

"What happened?"

She looked away.

And that was when I knew.

Whatever came next would change everything.

"I found out something about Ryan."

"What?"

"He wasn't who I thought he was."

I almost laughed.

"You're talking about him like he's the problem."

"He is."

"No, Emily."

I stepped closer.

"You are the one who hid a phone."

She looked down.

"I know."

"You are the one who lied."

"I know."

"You left our daughter alone."

"I know."

Her voice broke.

"I know."

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

Then she whispered:

"But I never stopped loving you."

Those words should have meant something.

A year ago, they would have.

Tonight?

They felt empty.

"Love doesn't excuse what happened."

"I know."

"Then tell me the truth."

She covered her face.

"I was scared."

"Of what?"

"Of losing everything."

I looked at her.

"You already were."

She cried harder.

But I couldn't stop.

Not because I wanted to hurt her.

Because I needed answers.

"Start from the beginning."

She looked at me.

"What?"

"Everything."

I pointed at the chair.

"Sit down."

She did.

And for the next hour, my wife told me a story I never expected to hear.

Three months after Miles was born, Emily received a message from Ryan.

At first, she ignored it.

Then another came.

Then another.

Ryan claimed he had information about a mistake that happened during the hospital stay.

A mistake involving paperwork.

A mistake involving medical records.

Emily thought he was trying to scare her.

Until he showed her something.

A photograph.

A document.

A piece of information he shouldn't have had.

"What document?" I asked.

Emily looked at me.

"The hospital paperwork."

"What about it?"

"There was a discrepancy."

My heart started beating faster.

"What discrepancy?"

She hesitated.

Then:

"The original birth records were changed."

The room went silent.

"Changed?"

"Yes."

"By who?"

"I don't know."

"Emily."

"I swear."

She looked at me.

"I don't know."

I walked toward the window.

The backyard lights were on.

My dogs were sitting near the fence.

Watching.

Waiting.

Just like me.

"Why didn't you tell me?"

"Because Ryan told me if I did, everything would fall apart."

"So you trusted him?"

"No."

"Then why listen?"

Her voice became small.

"Because he threatened me."

That stopped me.

"What kind of threat?"

She looked terrified.

"He said if I told you, he would destroy our family."

I turned.

"How?"

She whispered:

"He said he would tell everyone that Miles wasn't yours."

I stared at her.

"And you believed him?"

"I didn't know what to believe."

"Emily."

"I was exhausted. I was scared. I had a newborn. I thought maybe there really was something wrong."

I looked at the phone.

At the messages.

At the secrets.

"Then why did you meet him?"

She looked down.

"I wanted answers."

"How many times?"

Silence.

"How many times?"

"Three."

I nodded slowly.

Three times.

Three meetings.

Three opportunities to tell me.

Three times she chose a stranger over me.

"Did he ever touch you?"

She started crying.

"No."

I watched her carefully.

"Are you telling me the truth?"

"Yes."

The answer came immediately.

Maybe for the first time all night.

I believed her.

But that didn't fix anything.

Because another question remained.

"If Ryan knew something about Miles..."

I looked upstairs.

"...why did he wait until now?"

Emily's face changed.

"What?"

"He could have told me months ago."

She didn't answer.

"He didn't want me to know."

"No."

"Why?"

I picked up the phone again.

I opened the messages.

I scrolled.

Then I found something.

A message from Ryan sent two weeks earlier.

If you don't do what I asked, Grant finds out everything.

I showed it to Emily.

Her face went pale.

"What did he ask you to do?"

She didn't answer.

"What did Ryan want?"

Her lips trembled.

"I can't tell you."

I stared at her.

After everything.

After the lies.

After the phone.

After leaving our daughter alone.

She still protected him.

"Emily."

"I was trying to protect you."

"No."

I shook my head.

"You were protecting yourself."

Then I heard something.

A small sound.

A floorboard upstairs.

I turned.

"Tessa?"

No answer.

My heart dropped.

I walked quickly toward the stairs.

"Tessa?"

She appeared at the top.

Her eyes were full of tears.

She had heard everything.

"How long were you standing there?"

She didn't answer.

"Tessa."

"Dad..."

Her voice broke.

"I heard Mom say Miles might not be your son."

The pain on her face destroyed me.

Because she wasn't thinking about the affair.

She wasn't thinking about the adults.

She was thinking about her baby brother.

Her family.

Her world.

I ran upstairs and hugged her.

"I'm sorry you heard that."

She cried into my shoulder.

"Is Miles still my brother?"

That question broke me.

I held her tighter.

"Yes."

"Even if..."

I interrupted.

"Always."

She nodded.

But then she whispered something that made my blood run cold.

"Dad?"

"What?"

"I think Mom knows where the real phone is."

I looked at her.

"What real phone?"

Tessa wiped her tears.

"The one Ryan gave her."

My entire body went still.

"What are you talking about?"

May you like

She looked toward the hallway.

"The other phone isn't the only one."
