Chapter 8 - The Woman Who Knew the Truth

Maria reappeared three hours later.

Not at the restaurant.

At the police station.

She walked in carrying the missing folder.

Robert stared at her.

“You took it.”

“Yes.”

“Why?”

“Because I didn't trust anyone.”

“You left us in that basement.”

“I saved you.”

“How?”

Maria placed a recording on the table.

“Listen.”

The audio began.

Damian's voice.

“Margaret is becoming a problem.”

Another man's voice answered.

“Then remove her.”

My blood ran cold.

The second voice was older.

Familiar.

Robert looked at me.

“Do you recognize him?”

I shook my head.

Maria did.

“Richard Prescott.”

“But he's dead.”

“He recorded this eleven years ago.”

The recording continued.

Richard said:

“Daniel Miller knows too much.”

Damian answered:

“Then I'll handle it.”

The recording ended.

Chloe was crying.

“He killed my father?”

Maria shook her head.

“We don't know.”

Robert looked at the investigators.

“But now we have probable cause to reopen the case.”

I stared at the table.

For twenty-six years, I had believed my husband's death was tragic.

Now I wondered if it had been murder.

Then Robert opened Daniel's folder again.

A bank receipt fell out.

It showed a payment.

From Richard Prescott.

To Daniel.

Two days before Daniel died.

The amount was enormous.

“Why would Richard pay him?”

Maria answered.

“Because Daniel agreed to stay silent.”

I stared at her.

“My husband took the money?”

“No.”

“Then what happened?”

“He planned to return it.”

Robert looked at the date.

“The return never happened.”

“No.”

Maria leaned forward.

“Because Daniel died first.”

Nobody spoke.

Then Chloe whispered:

“Mom.”

I looked at her.

“What?”

“If Damian planned everything…”

She swallowed.

“Then maybe marrying me wasn't the end.”

Robert looked at her.

“No.”

He slowly shook his head.

“It was the beginning.”

He opened Damian's project files.

There was a document dated three months after the wedding.

PHASE TWO — ASSET CONSOLIDATION.

Underneath:

Divorce unnecessary.

Maintain emotional dependency.

Transfer remaining assets.

Secure permanent control.

Chloe stared at the page.

“He never intended to let me leave.”

“No,” Robert said.

Then we found the final line.

If resistance increases, escalate isolation.

I felt sick.

“What does that mean?”

Maria answered.

“It means he was prepared to destroy you.”

My phone rang.

Unknown number.

I answered.

Nobody spoke.

Then Damian whispered:

“Tell your daughter I miss her.”

I hung up.

Immediately another message appeared.

A photograph.

Chloe sleeping in the hotel room.

Taken from inside.

Robert stood.

“Everybody out.”

The hotel was compromised.

Again.

We moved to a secure location.

But this time, I wasn't afraid.

I was furious.

Damian had spent years controlling women because he believed fear made him powerful.

He had forgotten something.

Fear could also make people fight.

Robert began preparing emergency filings.

Maria agreed to testify.

Evelyn agreed too.

And then another woman came forward.

Her name was Rebecca.

She had worked for Damian ten years earlier.

She had one piece of evidence.

A video.

In it, Damian was talking to Richard.

The conversation was recorded the night before Daniel died.

Richard asked:

“What about the Miller family?”

Damian replied:

“Margaret will believe whatever the doctors tell her.”

I stopped breathing.

Then Richard asked:

“And the child?”

Damian smiled.

“Chloe?”

“Yes.”

“She'll belong to us eventually.”

The video ended.

Chloe sat perfectly still.

Then she stood.

“I want to testify.”

Robert looked at her.

“You don't have to.”

“Yes.”

“Chloe—”

“No.”

She wiped her tears.

“I spent years letting him tell me who I was.”

She looked at the camera.

“I'm done.”

The next morning, federal investigators arrived.

They took the files.

The recordings.

The contracts.

The financial documents.

And the photographs.

For the first time, Damian wasn't controlling the investigation.

He was the subject of it.

But before they could arrest him, he disappeared.

His restaurant was abandoned.

His house was empty.

His accounts had been drained.

His phone was disconnected.

He had vanished.

Then Robert received an email.

No subject.

No signature.

Only one sentence:

You found my past. Now I'll show you yours.

Attached was a photograph.

It showed my husband Daniel standing beside another woman.

A woman I had never seen before.

On the back was written:

Ask Margaret who she really was to your father.

Chloe looked at me.

“Mom?”

I couldn't answer.

Because I had no idea who the woman was.

May you like

But I knew one thing.

Damian had just opened a secret I had buried for twenty-six years without knowing it existed.
