Chapter 6 - The Basement

We found Evelyn two hours later.
She was hiding inside an abandoned church three blocks from The Hearth.
She looked exhausted.
Her hands were shaking.
But she was alive.
Robert sat beside her.
“What did you find?”
Evelyn looked at Chloe.
“I found the basement.”
“What's down there?”
“Records.”
“Records of what?”
“Everything.”
She handed Robert a key.
“There's a locked cabinet.”
“Where?”
“Behind the wine storage.”
Robert looked at the key.
“What does it open?”
“I don't know.”
“Then why take it?”
“Because Damian came downstairs while I was there.”
Everyone froze.
“What happened?”
“I hid.”
“Did he see you?”
“No.”
“What did he do?”
Evelyn swallowed.
“He opened the cabinet.”
“And?”
“He took one file.”
“Which one?”
Evelyn looked at me.
“Margaret Miller.”
My heart stopped.
“What was in it?”
“I didn't see everything.”
“What did you see?”
“A photograph of your husband.”
I felt dizzy.
“My husband?”
“Yes.”
“Daniel?”
She nodded.
“Damian had photographs of him.”
Robert stood.
“We need to get that cabinet.”
“No.”
Evelyn shook her head.
“It's too late.”
“Why?”
“Because Damian knows someone found it.”
That night, we returned to The Hearth with investigators.
The restaurant looked completely ordinary.
Beautiful dining room.
Expensive furniture.
Crystal glasses.
Soft lighting.
Nobody would have guessed what existed beneath the polished surface.
The basement door was hidden behind a shelving unit.
The key opened it.
We descended.
The smell changed immediately.
Old paper.
Dust.
Damp concrete.
There were shelves everywhere.
Boxes.
Hard drives.
Folders.
Photographs.
Robert opened one.
Names.
Dates.
Payments.
Contracts.
Threats.
Another folder contained photographs of women.
Some smiling.
Some crying.
Some leaving the restaurant.
Some were never photographed again.
One photograph stopped me.
A young woman standing beside Damian.
On the back was a date.
Nine years earlier.
Evelyn identified her.
“Maria Torres.”
“What happened to her?”
“She left.”
“Where?”
“No one knows.”
Robert opened another file.
Maria had been promised a partnership.
Then she discovered financial fraud.
After that, her file contained only one sentence:
Problem resolved.
I felt sick.
Then Chloe found a folder.
Her own name.
She opened it.
Inside was a timeline.
The day Damian first met her.
The first dinner.
The engagement.
The wedding.
Every major event.
Every argument.
Every time she tried to leave.
Every time she returned.
He had documented her behavior.
Robert stared at the pages.
“He was studying you.”
Chloe whispered:
“I wasn't his wife.”
“What?”
“I was a project.”
She was right.
Then she found something else.
A document titled:
MILLER TRUST — ACQUISITION STRATEGY.
Robert read it.
His face hardened.
“Damian planned the marriage before he proposed.”
Chloe covered her mouth.
“How long?”
Robert looked at the date.
“Two years.”
I closed my eyes.
Two years.
He had spent two years planning how to enter my daughter's life.
Then I saw another document.
It had Daniel's name.
DANIEL MILLER — RISK ASSESSMENT.
My hands began shaking.
Robert opened it.
The document contained information about my husband's investigation into Richard Prescott.
Then there was a handwritten note.
Daniel discovered the transfer.
Another:
He must be neutralized.
I couldn't breathe.
“Neutralized?”
Robert looked at me.
“Margaret…”
“No.”
I stepped back.
“My husband died of a heart attack.”
Robert said nothing.
“What are you thinking?”
“I don't know.”
“You know.”
He looked at the document again.
“I think we need to reopen the circumstances of Daniel's death.”
My legs nearly gave out.
Chloe caught me.
“Mom.”
“I thought I knew how your father died.”
She held me.
“So did I.”
Then a noise came from upstairs.
Footsteps.
Everyone froze.
Robert signaled for the investigators to stay quiet.
Another footstep.
Then another.
Someone was walking across the restaurant.
A door opened.
We heard Damian's voice.
“She's here.”
Chloe's eyes widened.
“How does he know?”
Robert whispered:
“He may not be talking about you.”
Damian continued:
“Find the cabinet.”
My heart stopped.
“He knows.”
The investigators moved toward the stairs.
Then we heard another voice.
A woman's voice.
Cold.
Calm.
Familiar.
“I already found it.”
Chloe looked at me.
“Who is that?”
I didn't know.
Then the woman walked into view.
And I recognized her.
She had been in one of the photographs.
Maria Torres.
The woman everyone believed had disappeared.
She looked directly down the basement stairs.
May you like
Then she smiled.
“Hello, Margaret.”
