Chapter 2 - The Women Behind the Door

The engine outside stopped.

Nobody moved.

For several seconds, the only sound inside Chloe's apartment was the faint hum of the refrigerator.

Robert stood beside the kitchen table, staring at the black flash drive.

“Turn off the lights,” he said.

Chloe immediately obeyed.

The apartment went dark.

I walked toward the window but Robert caught my arm.

“Don't.”

“Why?”

“If someone is watching this place, don't give them a silhouette.”

My heart pounded.

I had spent thirty years teaching children how to stay calm during emergencies.

Yet suddenly I was the one struggling to breathe.

Robert pulled out his phone.

“I'm calling someone.”

“Who?”

“Private investigator.”

Chloe sat on the couch, hugging herself.

“Mom…”

I sat beside her.

“I'm here.”

“What if Damian comes?”

“He won't get near you.”

“You don't know that.”

I looked into her eyes.

“No. I don't.”

She looked startled by my honesty.

“But I know one thing,” I continued. “You don't have to face him alone anymore.”

Robert returned a few minutes later.

“We're leaving through the parking garage.”

Chloe stood.

“Do we have time to pack?”

“Only essentials.”

She disappeared into the bedroom.

I followed.

She opened a drawer and began throwing clothes into a suitcase.

Then she stopped.

“My passport.”

“Where is it?”

“Damian keeps our important documents.”

My stomach tightened.

“Does he have your driver's license?”

“Yes.”

“Social Security card?”

“Yes.”

Robert heard us from the hallway.

“Take photographs of anything you can remember. Don't confront him for the documents.”

Chloe nodded.

Then she pulled open another drawer.

Inside were photographs.

Wedding photographs.

Our family.

Her old design studio.

She stared at them.

“I thought I was happy.”

I put my hand on her shoulder.

“You were trying to be.”

She wiped her eyes.

“I kept thinking if I worked harder, he'd love me again.”

I didn't know what to say.

There are moments when a mother discovers that love cannot rescue her child.

Only truth can.

We left through the underground garage.

Robert's investigator had arranged a vehicle waiting two blocks away.

We drove to a small hotel outside the city.

Only after we entered the room did Robert connect the flash drive to an isolated laptop.

A folder appeared.

There were eleven files.

The first was labeled:

PROJECT HEARTH

The second:

EMPLOYEE AGREEMENTS

The third:

PRIVATE CLIENTS

And the fourth:

WOMEN

Chloe stared at the screen.

“No.”

Robert clicked it.

Seven names appeared.

All women.

All connected to The Hearth.

Some had worked there.

Some had designed things for Damian.

One had been listed as a former business partner.

Another was identified as “consultant.”

Robert opened the first file.

A spreadsheet appeared.

Dates.

Payments.

Debts.

Personal information.

Then one column stopped me cold.

CONTROL LEVERAGE.

Underneath each woman's name were notes.

Family problems.

Financial debts.

Private photographs.

Threats.

Legal vulnerabilities.

I felt sick.

“He collected information about them,” I whispered.

Robert nodded.

“Not just information.”

He scrolled.

“He was building leverage.”

Chloe covered her mouth.

“Why?”

Robert looked at her.

“Because people are easier to control when they're afraid of losing something.”

Another file contained scanned contracts.

Each woman had signed an agreement.

Each agreement transferred intellectual-property rights to Damian's company.

Some had been promised salaries.

Others had been promised ownership.

None appeared to have received what they were promised.

Then we found something worse.

A document titled:

EXIT PROTOCOL.

Robert opened it.

There were instructions.

What Damian should do if an employee threatened to leave.

What to say.

Who to contact.

Which personal secrets to use.

Which debts to exploit.

And one sentence repeated several times:

Never allow the woman to leave with the original documents.

Chloe started crying.

“He planned this.”

“Yes,” Robert said.

“He planned everything.”

“Yes.”

I looked at my daughter.

“Then he made one mistake.”

She looked at me.

“What?”

“He underestimated you.”

A notification appeared on the computer.

A new email had arrived.

Robert froze.

“What?”

He opened it.

There was no message.

Only an attachment.

A photograph.

Chloe.

Taken that afternoon.

Walking into the hotel.

Robert immediately disconnected the computer.

“He knows we're here.”

My blood went cold.

“How?”

Robert looked at the flash drive.

“Because this may not just contain evidence.”

He turned it over.

“There could be tracking software.”

“Then destroy it,” I said.

“No.”

He looked at me.

“It's evidence.”

“Then what do we do?”

“We stop running.”

He reached for his phone.

“I know someone in federal law enforcement.”

Chloe stared at him.

“Federal?”

Robert nodded.

“Because if these documents are authentic, Damian's problem may be much bigger than a restaurant.”

Before he could make the call, Chloe whispered:

“There's another folder.”

“What folder?”

She pointed to the screen.

One folder had appeared after the flash drive was connected.

It was encrypted.

The name was simple.

MILLER.

My blood ran cold.

“That's my name.”

Robert stared at it.

“Margaret…”

I swallowed.

“Open it.”

He looked at me.

“Are you sure?”

“No.”

I stared at the folder.

“But I'm done being afraid of what I'll find.”

Robert entered a password recovered from another file.

The folder opened.

Inside was one document.

One photograph.

And one recording.

The photograph was of me.

Standing outside my Baltimore home.

Taken months earlier.

The document contained my address, workplace history, financial records, and family information.

The recording began automatically.

Damian's voice filled the room.

“If Margaret Miller interferes, Chloe becomes the leverage.”

I stopped breathing.

Then his voice continued.

“She won't understand what's happening until it's too late.”

The recording ended.

Nobody spoke.

Then Chloe whispered:

“He was watching you too.”

I looked at my daughter.

And for the first time that night, I realized something terrifying.

Damian hadn't simply been controlling Chloe.

May you like

He had been preparing for me.

And he had been preparing for the moment I finally fought back.
