Chapter 9 - THE NAME BEHIND THE NAME

Marcus Vale disappeared.
His office was empty.
His house was empty.
His bank accounts were frozen.
But Daniel found something.
A storage unit.
Inside were boxes of documents.
Photographs.
Phones.
Hard drives.
And a handwritten ledger.
Evelyn opened it carefully.
The first pages listed names.
Companies.
Payments.
Dates.
Then one name appeared repeatedly.
R. BLACKWOOD
I didn't recognize it.
“Who is R. Blackwood?”
Daniel shook his head.
“We're checking.”
Three hours later, he came back.
“Richard Blackwood.”
“Who?”
“A private investor.”
“Connected to Gideon?”
Daniel nodded.
“To Marcus.”
“To Dr. Mercer?”
“Yes.”
I stared at him.
“Why would an investor care about me?”
“He doesn't.”
“Then what does he want?”
Daniel opened another file.
A property map.
My house was marked.
So were three other properties.
“All of these belong to women whose husbands work with Marcus.”
I felt cold.
“What happened to them?”
Daniel looked at me.
“All three filed for bankruptcy.”
“Because of fraud?”
“Yes.”
“And their husbands?”
“Financially protected.”
I understood.
It wasn't one scheme.
It was a system.
Men built fraudulent accounts around their wives.
They moved money.
Created fake debts.
Forged signatures.
Then blamed the wives.
The husbands walked away.
The wives lost everything.
Some lost custody.
Some lost their homes.
One had disappeared completely.
I stared at the map.
“How many women?”
Daniel didn't answer.
“How many?”
“Twenty-three.”
My stomach turned.
I looked at Evelyn.
“We need to expose this.”
“We will.”
“But not just for me.”
“I know.”
That night, I sat with Celina.
We hadn't talked much since Gideon's arrest.
Finally she said:
“Do you hate me?”
I looked at her.
“Yes.”
She nodded.
“I understand.”
“But I don't want to hate you forever.”
She began crying.
“I deserve it.”
“You hurt me.”
“I know.”
“You lied.”
“I know.”
“You helped him.”
“I know.”
“But you also gave me the evidence.”
She looked up.
“I was afraid.”
“So was I.”
We sat in silence.
Then she said:
“I want to make it right.”
I nodded.
“Then tell the truth.”
She did.
The next morning, Celina gave a formal statement.
She admitted the affair.
She admitted giving Gideon information.
She admitted being manipulated.
And she described every night she had seen Roger left downstairs.
Her statement became critical evidence.
So did the recording.
So did the camera footage.
Then Dr. Mercer came forward.
She confessed.
She had falsified the psychological evaluation.
She had done it because Gideon threatened her husband.
But she also admitted taking money.
She wasn't innocent.
Neither was Celina.
Neither was Gideon.
The difference was that some people eventually chose the truth.
Marcus didn't.
Richard Blackwood didn't.
And the investigation suddenly became much larger.
Federal agents entered Marcus's offices.
Accounts were frozen.
Search warrants were issued.
The newspapers began reporting on the financial network.
But one question remained.
Who was Richard Blackwood?
Daniel found him in a hotel under a false name.
He was arrested before he could leave the country.
During questioning, he finally admitted the truth.
Gideon had not created the scheme.
Marcus hadn't either.
They were middlemen.
Richard Blackwood was the architect.
But when investigators asked why Bernice had been targeted, he gave an answer none of us expected.
“Because her father left her something.”
My heart stopped.
“My father?”
Blackwood nodded.
“A trust.”
I stared at Evelyn.
“My father didn't have a trust.”
“He did,” Blackwood said.
“For what?”
“Thirty million dollars.”
The room went silent.
My father had died believing he was leaving me a modest inheritance.
Apparently, that was only part of the story.
Blackwood leaned forward.
“Your father knew men like us.”
“Who?”
“People who move money.”
“Why didn't he tell me?”
“Because he didn't trust anyone.”
I asked:
“Why did he put it in my name?”
Blackwood smiled faintly.
“Because he knew eventually someone would come looking.”
I felt a chill.
“Who?”
May you like
He looked directly at me.
“Everyone.”
