Chapter 13 - THE LAST FILE

I thought the nightmare was over.
I was wrong.
Six months after Gideon's conviction, I received a package.
No return address.
Inside was a single envelope.
And a photograph.
The photograph showed Gideon, Marcus, and Richard Blackwood.
But the date on the photograph was recent.
Three weeks after Gideon's arrest.
I stared at it.
That was impossible.
Gideon had been in custody.
Marcus had been in custody.
Blackwood had been in custody.
Then I noticed the fourth person.
A woman.
Her face was partially hidden.
But I knew the coat.
I knew the posture.
I knew the necklace.
Dr. Mercer.
I called Evelyn.
She arrived within thirty minutes.
We studied the photograph.
“This could be fake,” she said.
“Who sent it?”
“We don't know.”
Inside the envelope was a note.
Blackwood wasn't the beginning.
My stomach tightened.
Another line:
He was only the man they wanted you to blame.
I stared at Evelyn.
“What does that mean?”
“I don't know.”
There was a second flash drive.
It contained one file.
A recording.
A woman's voice.
“Bernice.”
I froze.
It was my mother.
But my mother was sitting across the table from me.
The recording continued.
“You don't know me.”
The woman wasn't my mother.
She had copied her voice.
The message lasted forty seconds.
At the end, she said:
“Your father knew us.”
Then:
“He ran before he could expose us.”
I felt cold.
“My father?”
Evelyn shook her head.
“Don't jump to conclusions.”
The file ended.
Then another file appeared.
A bank account.
A name.
The Bennett Family Foundation.
My father's old foundation.
I had never heard of it.
But the account balance was enormous.
$74 million.
I stared at the screen.
Evelyn whispered:
“Bernice, we need to find out what your father was involved in.”
I wanted to refuse.
I wanted to close the laptop.
I wanted my life to be normal.
But I had learned something.
Secrets didn't disappear because you ignored them.
They waited.
And eventually, they came looking for you.
I called Daniel.
He agreed to investigate.
Three days later, he found the first connection.
My father had once worked with Richard Blackwood.
Not as a partner.
As an adversary.
My father had discovered the network decades earlier.
He had tried to expose it.
Then he vanished from the financial world.
He moved.
Changed his business.
Created the trust.
And raised me quietly.
Daniel found one final note in my father's files.
If they ever come for Bernice, it means I failed to finish what I started.
I cried when I read it.
Not because I was afraid.
Because I finally understood my father's silence.
He hadn't been hiding wealth from me.
May you like
He had been hiding danger.
And now that danger had found me.
