Chapter 12 - THE WOMAN WHO CAME BACK

Months passed.

The investigation continued.

The trial began.

Celina testified.

Dr. Mercer testified.

Victor testified.

Gideon testified.

Marcus refused.

Richard Blackwood refused.

The evidence didn't need their cooperation.

The jury heard the recordings.

They saw the forged documents.

They watched the security footage.

They saw Roger sitting alone on the kitchen floor.

That footage was never shown publicly.

It didn't need to be.

The prosecutor described it.

That was enough.

Gideon was convicted.

Marcus was convicted.

Dr. Mercer received a reduced sentence because she cooperated.

Victor received a separate sentence.

Blackwood faced charges connected to multiple victims.

And Celina?

She pleaded guilty to the financial crimes she had participated in.

But she also testified.

Her sentence was reduced.

She spent the first few weeks after the trial staying with our mother.

We barely spoke.

Then one afternoon she came to my house.

The house was finally mine again.

The locks had been changed.

The cameras were replaced.

The side door was sealed.

Roger was playing in the backyard.

Celina stood at the front door.

“I don't expect you to forgive me.”

I looked at her.

“Good.”

She nodded.

“I just wanted to tell you something.”

“What?”

“I love Roger.”

I said nothing.

“And I know that doesn't excuse what I did.”

“No.”

“I wish I'd stopped Gideon the first night.”

“So do I.”

She looked down.

“I'll regret it for the rest of my life.”

I believed her.

But forgiveness wasn't something I owed her.

Trust wasn't either.

I said:

“If you want a relationship with Roger someday, you'll have to earn it.”

She nodded.

“I will.”

Then she left.

I watched her walk down the driveway.

I didn't know whether we'd ever be sisters again.

Maybe some things couldn't be repaired.

Maybe they could only be remembered.

And then Roger ran inside.

“Mommy!”

I turned.

He held his elephant.

“What?”

“Look!”

He handed me a drawing.

It showed three people.

Me.

Roger.

And Grandma.

No Gideon.

No Celina.

No black car.

Just us.

I hugged him.

“That is beautiful.”

He smiled.

Then he asked:

“Can we sleep upstairs tonight?”

I laughed.

“Yes.”

“Not on the kitchen floor?”

I froze.

Then I crouched in front of him.

“Never again.”

He nodded.

“Promise?”

“I promise.”

He hugged me.

May you like

And for the first time, the words didn't feel like a wish.

They felt like the truth.
