Chapter 3 - The Security Grid

Upstairs in Ethan’s nursery, I filled a bath with warm water. I gently peeled off the ruined dinosaur pajamas, my heart breaking anew as I saw the faint red scrapes on his little knees from crawling across the rough grouting of the marble downstairs.

"Mommy," Ethan whispered, his large brown eyes looking up at me through a rim of wet lashes. "Daddy said I don't have a room here anymore. He said Chloe is going to live in my room."

"Daddy is wrong, my love," I said, squeezing a warm washcloth over his shoulders, washing away the dust of their cruelty. "This room belongs to you. And nobody is ever going to tell you to crawl again."

While Ethan soaked, I pulled up the security camera application on my phone. The blinking light in the downstairs hallway wasn't just a standard home security feed. It was linked to a high-capacity commercial server I used for my corporate auditing firm. It recorded in full high-definition with omnidirectional audio.

I scrolled back forty-eight hours.

The footage was a horror story of domestic neglect. The moment my plane had departed for Monterrey, Richard had brought Brooke and the baby into the house. For two days, Ethan had been confined to the small playroom down the hall, fed leftovers while Richard, Brooke, and Vivian celebrated in the dining room. The camera caught the exact moment Vivian had snatched a toy truck from Ethan's hand, throwing it across the room and telling him he was "nothing but a burden on Richard’s true future."

My hands shook as I downloaded the files, routing them directly to three separate off-site cloud drives and my lawyer's secure database.

The doorbell downstairs rang. It wasn't a gentle chime; it was a heavy, authoritative knock that vibrated through the floorboards.
