Chapter 5 - The Woman at the Top of the StairsVanessa watched the courthouse footage from her penthouse, one hand gripping the remote so tightly her knuckles whitened.

Richard looked terrible on camera.
Cornered.
Angry.
Guilty.
Khloe looked worse in a different way.
Sympathetic.
That was dangerous.
The pregnant wife in a cream dress. The calm brother beside her. The billionaire husband refusing questions about hidden money and a pregnant mistress.
America loved a fallen king.
But it loved a betrayed woman even more.
Vanessa muted the television when her phone rang.
Richard.
“What did you do?” she demanded.
“What did I do?”
“You look guilty.”
“I was ambushed.”
“You were unprepared.”
Richard exhaled sharply.
“Not now.”
“Yes, now. My name is everywhere.”
“Your name is nowhere officially.”
“Everyone knows.”
“That is not my problem today.”
Vanessa went silent.
“Excuse me?”
Richard lowered his voice.
“My company is under review. Investors are calling. The board wants a private meeting.”
“And what am I supposed to do?”
“Stay quiet.”
Vanessa laughed once.
“You brought me into this.”
“I said stay quiet.”
The line went dead.
Vanessa stared at the phone.
For two years, Richard’s attention had felt like victory.
Now his distance felt like a warning.
By evening, Vanessa received the first message from an unknown number.
Homewrecker.
Then another.
Gold digger.
Then a photograph of her Boston building appeared on a gossip page.
She called Richard again.
He did not answer.
Something ugly stirred inside her.
If Richard abandoned her now, she would become the woman blamed for everything while he found a way to recover. Men like Richard always did. They apologized to shareholders, donated to hospitals, cried in interviews, and married someone quieter.
Vanessa had not survived a decade of wealthy clients and condescending wives just to be discarded.
Two days later, she drove to Pennsylvania.
Not to see Richard.
To see Khloe.
The courthouse hearing on custody protections was short, procedural, and tense. Khloe was eight months pregnant now, moving slowly, exhausted by legal appointments and medical checkups. The baby was healthy, but stress followed her everywhere like a second shadow.
Harrison walked beside her down the hallway after the hearing.
“You did well,” he said.
“I said three sentences.”
“Three correct sentences.”
Khloe gave him a tired smile.
Then she saw Vanessa.
She stood near the courthouse exit in a tailored black coat, her hair perfect, her face pale with anger beneath expensive makeup.
Harrison immediately shifted his body in front of Khloe.
Vanessa raised both hands.
“I just want to talk.”
“No,” Harrison said.
Khloe touched his arm.
“It’s okay.”
“It is not okay.”
But Khloe was tired of being haunted by a woman who existed mostly in messages, hotel photos, and nightmares.
“I’ll talk to her here. In public.”
Harrison’s eyes stayed on Vanessa.
“Two minutes.”
Vanessa smiled faintly.
“Still hiding behind your brother?”
Khloe felt the insult, but it did not cut as deeply as Vanessa hoped.
“No,” Khloe said. “Standing beside someone who actually protects me.”
Vanessa’s smile vanished.
They moved toward the top of the courthouse steps where cold wind swept across the entrance. Harrison remained a few feet away, close enough to intervene, far enough to let Khloe speak.
Vanessa looked Khloe up and down.
“You have ruined everything.”
Khloe almost laughed.
“I ruined everything?”
“You sent him after Richard.”
“Richard sent himself after Richard.”
Vanessa stepped closer.
“You think you’re innocent because you cry well?”
Khloe’s hand moved over her stomach.
“I think I’m tired.”
“Then stop.”
Khloe stared at her.
“Stop what?”
“Stop fighting. Take the house. Take money. Go raise your baby somewhere quiet.”
“My baby has a father.”
Vanessa’s eyes flashed.
“So does mine.”
The words landed hard.
Khloe took a breath.
“I know.”
For one second, Vanessa looked surprised.
Khloe continued softly.
“I know about your child. And I am sorry for that baby too.”
Vanessa recoiled as if slapped.
“Do not pity me.”
“I pity both of them,” Khloe said. “Because Richard treats children like legacy assets and women like rooms he can redesign when bored.”
Vanessa’s face twisted.
“You don’t know him.”
“I know the version he becomes when you stop serving his story.”
That hit the target.
Vanessa stepped forward again.
“You think Harrison can protect you from everything?”
Khloe looked past her toward the city.
“No. But he taught me something Richard never wanted me to learn.”
“What?”
Khloe met her eyes.
“Documentation beats manipulation.”
Vanessa’s mask cracked.
“You smug little—”
“Careful,” Harrison called.
Several attorneys nearby turned.
Vanessa noticed the attention and forced herself to smile.
“You want to win?” she whispered. “Fine. Win the divorce. Win the money. But Richard will never love that baby the way he loves mine.”
For a moment, Khloe’s breath caught.
Vanessa saw it.
And smiled.
Then Richard appeared behind Vanessa, rushing from the courthouse doors.
“Vanessa, what the hell are you doing here?”
Khloe looked from one to the other.
There it was.
Not love.
Panic.
Vanessa turned on him.
“You weren’t answering.”
“This is not the place.”
“It became the place when you left me alone to be blamed.”
Harrison moved closer.
Khloe stepped back.
But the argument sharpened fast.
Vanessa pointed at Richard.
“You promised me she was nothing.”
Richard grabbed her arm.
“Lower your voice.”
Khloe’s stomach tightened painfully.
“Harrison,” she whispered.
He was already reaching for her.
But Vanessa saw Richard’s hand on her arm, saw Khloe watching, saw reporters below raising cameras, and something reckless broke loose inside her.
She yanked free.
“Don’t touch me like I’m her.”
Richard snapped, “Then stop acting insane.”
Vanessa’s face changed.
Khloe took another step back.
Too close to the stairs.
“Khloe,” Harrison warned.
Vanessa turned.
Her eyes were wet, furious, humiliated.
“You did this.”
Khloe lifted one hand.
“Vanessa, don’t—”
The shove came before anyone believed she would actually do it.
A hard, open-palmed push to Khloe’s shoulders.
The world tilted.
Harrison lunged.
His fingers brushed Khloe’s sleeve.
Missed.
May you like
The courthouse gasped.
And Khloe fell.
