Chapter 3 - Vanessa’s SmileVanessa Kensington did not consider herself a mistress.

Mistress sounded cheap.

Temporary.

Disposable.

Vanessa preferred the word inevitable.

Richard had told her from the beginning that his marriage was already dead. Khloe was fragile. Khloe was needy. Khloe lived in the past. Khloe had become a shadow inside that grand estate, haunting rooms Richard no longer wanted to enter.

Vanessa believed him because she wanted to.

And because believing him made everything she took feel less like theft.

Her Boston penthouse overlooked the harbor, all glass and pale stone and custom Italian furniture paid for through design invoices Richard insisted were “project expenses.” Vanessa had personally chosen the nursery wallpaper, a soft ivory pattern with tiny gold stars. She had imagined reporters photographing it one day when Richard finally announced their relationship publicly.

The Harrington heir, she thought.

Not Khloe’s child.

Hers.

When Richard arrived that evening, Vanessa opened the door wearing silk and confidence.

But one look at his face ruined her mood.

“What happened?”

Richard walked past her, poured a drink, and swallowed half of it before answering.

“Khloe knows.”

Vanessa went still.

“What does she know?”

“Enough.”

“That’s not an answer.”

Richard turned on her.

“She took screenshots. Messages. Transfers. Maybe account records.”

Vanessa’s hand moved instinctively to her stomach.

“How?”

“The iPad. The secondary cloud account.”

“You told me that was secure.”

“I thought it was.”

Vanessa stared at him, panic rising beneath her polished surface.

“Well, fix it.”

Richard laughed sharply.

“Fix it?”

“Yes. Talk to her. Offer her something. She’s pregnant, emotional, desperate to keep you. Use that.”

Richard looked away.

Vanessa’s eyes narrowed.

“What?”

“Harrison Cole is involved.”

For the first time, Vanessa had no immediate reply.

She knew the name. Everyone in elite circles knew the name.

Harrison Cole was the attorney executives mentioned in lowered voices. He did not simply win cases. He exposed secrets people thought were buried under lawyers, accountants, offshore accounts, and dead signatures.

Vanessa forced a smile.

“He’s a divorce attorney?”

“No.”

“Then why are you scared?”

Richard’s silence answered too much.

Vanessa’s voice sharpened.

“Richard.”

“He found things.”

“What things?”

“Business things.”

Vanessa stepped back.

“You told me the money was yours.”

“It is complicated.”

“It was supposed to be clean.”

“It was supposed to be temporary.”

Vanessa looked toward the nursery, suddenly seeing every expensive object in it differently. The crib. The chandelier. The hand-painted mural. The imported rocking chair.

Evidence.

All of it could become evidence.

“You said Khloe would go quietly,” Vanessa whispered.

“She was supposed to.”

“Because you said she was weak.”

Richard’s expression hardened.

“She is weak.”

“No,” Vanessa said slowly. “You were careless.”

The insult landed.

Richard slammed the glass down.

“Do not forget who paid for this place.”

Vanessa’s fear burned into anger.

“And do not forget who knows where every invoice went.”

They stared at each other.

That was the ugly truth beneath their romance.

They loved each other only when winning felt easy.

Richard exhaled, trying to regain control.

“We need to stay calm.”

Vanessa laughed.

“I am carrying your child while your wife carries another. Calm is not exactly available.”

Richard rubbed his forehead.

“My attorney is filing first.”

“For divorce?”

“Yes. Before Harrison controls the narrative.”

Vanessa nodded, thinking quickly.

“And Khloe?”

“She will be painted as unstable.”

Vanessa’s gaze sharpened.

“Good.”

Richard looked at her.

“We need witnesses. Staff. Doctors. Anyone who can say she was irrational.”

Vanessa walked to the window, watching city lights flicker over the water.

“I can help with that.”

“How?”

“She called me once.”

Richard frowned.

“When?”

“Two months ago. From an unknown number. She didn’t say anything at first. Just breathed. Then asked if I was proud of myself.”

Richard stared.

“You never told me that.”

“It wasn’t important.”

“It is now.”

Vanessa turned back, her smile returning.

“I can say she threatened me.”

Richard hesitated.

“She didn’t.”

“Does that matter anymore?”

For a second, Richard looked almost disturbed. Then ambition swallowed conscience.

“No.”

Vanessa stepped closer.

“She is five months pregnant?”

“Nearly six.”

“And fragile.”

Richard nodded slowly.

Vanessa placed his hand on her stomach.

“Then we make everyone afraid of what she might do. To herself. To me. To our baby.”

Richard looked at the nursery door.

“You understand what that means?”

Vanessa’s voice softened into something poisonous.

“It means your wife becomes the villain before she can become the victim.”

Neither of them noticed Richard’s phone lying face up on the counter.

Neither of them noticed the call still connected.

In Manhattan, Harrison Cole sat at his desk listening through Khloe’s old household line, legally patched through after Richard accidentally triggered the smart-home callback system during his panic.

His forensic tech looked across the desk and raised an eyebrow.

“Are we recording?”

Harrison’s face revealed nothing.

“Every word.”

By midnight, Vanessa Kensington had unknowingly handed Harrison a gift.

A conspiracy.

A motive.

A plan.

And most importantly, a preview of the cruelty she was willing to aim at a pregnant woman who had done nothing but stand in the way of her fantasy.

Harrison ended the recording and looked toward the conference room where Khloe had fallen asleep on the couch under a blanket, one hand curved around her unborn daughter.

His jaw tightened.

“Richard wants a war,” he said softly.

His investigator closed the laptop.

“What do you want?”

May you like

Harrison watched his sister sleep.

“Terms of surrender.”
