Chapter 6 - THE WOMAN RYAN THREW AWAY COMES BACK

The next morning, I walked into the headquarters of Whitmore-Hart Holdings.

The building had belonged to my grandfather.

But I had never entered it.

Not as an owner.

Not until that day.

Employees stopped talking when I entered.

Alexander walked beside me.

Ryan followed several steps behind.

The receptionist looked nervous.

“Can I help you?”

I placed the trust document on the desk.

“My name is Mariana Hart.”

Her face changed.

She stood immediately.

“Ms. Hart.”

Within thirty minutes, the boardroom was full.

Executives.

Lawyers.

Accountants.

People who had spent years pretending I didn't exist.

I sat at the head of the table.

Ryan sat across from me.

Alexander stood behind me.

A lawyer cleared his throat.

“Ms. Hart, the trust has been inactive for years.”

“No.”

I slid another document forward.

“It has been unlawfully withheld.”

Silence.

I had spent three years rebuilding my life.

Alexander had helped me understand business.

My mother had taught me what had been stolen.

I had studied every document.

Every transaction.

Every company.

Every signature.

I was no longer the frightened woman standing outside the Beverly Hills gate.

I was the legal owner of a fortune my family had been denied.

Then the doors opened.

Rebecca walked in.

She was furious.

“You have no right to be here.”

I smiled.

“I own the building.”

Her face turned white.

“You don't understand what you're doing.”

“I understand everything.”

Ryan stood.

“Mom.”

She looked at him.

“You betrayed us.”

He shook his head.

“No.”

“You're protecting her?”

“Yes.”

Rebecca laughed bitterly.

“She manipulated you.”

“No.”

Ryan looked at her.

“You manipulated me.”

Silence.

Rebecca stared at her son.

“You have no idea what you're talking about.”

“I found Father's files.”

Her expression changed.

Just slightly.

But I saw it.

So did Ryan.

“You knew,” he said.

Rebecca looked away.

“I did what I had to do.”

“What did you do to Mariana's mother?”

“I didn't hurt her.”

“You helped him.”

Rebecca's lips trembled.

“I was afraid.”

Ryan shook his head.

“You let me destroy my marriage.”

“I wanted you to survive.”

“You told me she was barren.”

“I believed—”

“You knew she was pregnant.”

Rebecca froze.

Ryan stepped closer.

“You knew.”

I stared at her.

She couldn't speak.

Then she finally whispered:

“Yes.”

The room went silent.

Ryan looked devastated.

“You knew my wife was pregnant when you threw her out?”

“Yes.”

“And you let me believe she couldn't have children?”

Rebecca began crying.

“I was trying to protect the family.”

“No.”

Ryan's voice broke.

“You were protecting the money.”

Rebecca collapsed into a chair.

Then she said something none of us expected.

“Charles isn't the one you should be afraid of.”

I frowned.

“Why?”

She looked directly at me.

“Because he has been dead for six months.”

Ryan froze.

“What?”

Rebecca continued.

“The man controlling everything now…”

She looked toward the window.

“…is someone you already know.”

I felt a chill.

“Who?”

Rebecca whispered:

“Alexander Whitmore.”

I turned.

Alexander stood behind me.

He wasn't smiling anymore.

And for the first time, I noticed something strange.

He wasn't surprised.
