Chapter 4 - THE DOCUMENT THAT COULD DESTROY THE MONTGOMERYS

We escaped through the back door.

Alexander drove.

My mother sat beside me.

The children were safe.

But nothing about my life felt safe anymore.

Ryan had spent years believing he was the victim.

Now I knew he had been living inside a family built on secrets.

By sunrise, we were staying in a private residence Alexander owned.

My mother finally told me the truth.

“Your grandfather founded the original company.”

I stared at her.

“The Montgomery company?”

“No.”

She shook her head.

“The company was originally called Hart-Witmore Development.”

My eyes widened.

“The Montgomerys joined later.”

“Yes.”

“And they took control?”

“Through manipulation.”

My mother explained that my grandfather had trusted Charles Montgomery.

Charles slowly gained control of the business.

Then forged documents.

Created debts.

Transferred assets.

By the time my grandfather realized what was happening, the company was practically gone.

My mother had tried to recover it.

That's when everything happened.

I looked at the trust.

“Why didn't you fight?”

“Because Charles threatened you.”

My voice broke.

“You sacrificed your entire life for me.”

She touched my face.

“I would do it again.”

I cried.

For years I had believed my mother abandoned me.

She had been protecting me.

Suddenly my phone buzzed.

A message.

From Ryan.

Please let me see my children.

I stared at it.

My mother watched me.

“What will you do?”

“I don't know.”

Then another message arrived.

I know I don't deserve forgiveness. But I need to know them.

I didn't respond.

A third message.

Please.

For the first time, I wondered whether Ryan truly regretted what he'd done.

Then I remembered him standing at the gate.

You're no longer welcome in this house.

My anger returned.

But the children deserved to know the truth.

Not revenge.

Truth.

I agreed to one meeting.

A public park.

Ryan arrived alone.

He looked exhausted.

No wedding ring.

I noticed.

“Where's Vanessa?”

“She left.”

“Good.”

He flinched.

“I deserve that.”

The boys ran toward him.

Ryan froze.

Ethan looked up.

“Are you Daddy?”

Ryan's eyes filled with tears.

He crouched.

“I don't know if I deserve to be.”

Evan stared at him.

“You look like us.”

Ryan laughed through tears.

“I've been told that.”

Lily stayed beside me.

Ryan looked at her.

“Is she mine too?”

“Yes.”

He covered his face.

For the first time, I saw him truly break.

“I missed everything.”

“You chose to.”

“I didn't know.”

“You didn't ask.”

He nodded.

“I know.”

Then he looked at me.

“Why didn't you tell me?”

“Because when I discovered I was pregnant, you had already thrown me out.”

“I would have come back.”

“No.”

He looked down.

“You're right.”

A long silence followed.

Then Ryan asked:

“What do you need from me?”

I answered honestly.

“Nothing.”

His face fell.

“But the children might need something from you someday.”

He nodded.

“I'll be there.”

Then a black car slowly passed the park.

My mother had warned me.

I watched it disappear.

Ryan noticed my expression.

“What is it?”

“Nothing.”

But then my phone buzzed.

A photograph appeared.

It was Lily.

Taken from across the park.

Underneath it were five words:

Next time, we take her.

I looked at Ryan.

“We have to go.”

“Why?”

I showed him the photograph.

His face changed.

“Who sent this?”

“People connected to your family.”

Ryan went pale.

“My family?”

I nodded.

“Your family is coming for my daughter.”

Ryan stood.

“Then they'll have to get through me first.”

I looked at him.

For the first time in eleven years, Ryan sounded like the man I once loved.

But I wasn't sure whether I could trust him.

Because that night, someone broke into Ryan's house.

And they weren't looking for money.

May you like

They were looking for one thing.

A document bearing my mother's signature.
