Chapter 10 - THE TRUTH GOES PUBLIC

The press conference was held three days later.
Every major Los Angeles news outlet was there.
Ryan stood beside me.
My parents stood behind us.
Alexander sat nearby.
Vanessa handed documents to reporters.
Then I stepped toward the microphones.
“For eleven years, I was told I was incapable of having children.”
Cameras flashed.
“My husband divorced me because he believed I could never give him a family.”
Ryan lowered his head.
“That was a lie.”
The reporters murmured.
“I was pregnant when my husband threw me out.”
More cameras.
“I gave birth to three children.”
The room erupted.
Ryan's face appeared on every screen.
Then I revealed the financial documents.
Fraud.
Forgery.
Hidden accounts.
Illegal transfers.
The Montgomery family empire began collapsing in real time.
But then something unexpected happened.
A reporter asked:
“Ms. Hart, is Ryan Montgomery responsible?”
I looked at him.
“Yes.”
Ryan nodded.
“I was.”
The room went silent.
He stepped forward.
“I believed my family.”
“I believed my mother.”
“I believed a lie about my wife.”
He looked directly at the cameras.
“I destroyed my marriage.”
Then he looked at me.
“And I abandoned my children without knowing they existed.”
His voice broke.
“I can't undo that.”
“But I can spend the rest of my life making sure they never pay for my mistakes.”
For the first time, I saw Ryan accept responsibility without asking for forgiveness.
Then the room lights suddenly flickered.
The screen behind us changed.
A video appeared.
Victor Hart.
He was sitting in a dark room.
“You think you've won?”
Everyone froze.
Victor smiled.
“You've exposed old crimes.”
He leaned closer.
“But you haven't exposed the truth.”
A photograph appeared.
My grandfather.
Beside him stood a young Charles.
And a third man.
Victor.
Victor spoke.
“Your grandfather didn't steal from me.”
He paused.
“He stole from your father.”
I looked at my father.
His face turned pale.
Victor continued:
“Your father wasn't protecting you.”
“He was protecting himself.”
My mother gasped.
The screen went black.
Then a final message appeared.
Ask Daniel Hart why he abandoned his daughter.
I turned toward my father.
“Dad?”
He couldn't meet my eyes.
Ryan looked at him.
“What did you do?”
My father whispered:
“I made a deal.”
“What deal?”
“To keep Mariana alive.”
“What did you give them?”
He looked at me.
May you like
“My daughter.”
My heart shattered.
