Chapter 4 - THE CHILD IN THE PHOTOGRAPH

Arthur refused to explain.

He was taken away.

But his final words haunted me.

The child has already been found.

Mercer brought me into a secure interview room.

Ethan sat across from me.

Natalie stood near the door.

“Tell me everything.”

Ethan sighed.

“Seven years ago, I discovered that my father had built the family fortune through fraud, bribery, money laundering, and stolen assets.”

I listened.

“He wasn't working alone,” Ethan continued. “He had partners.”

“Who?”

Ethan looked at Mercer.

“People inside government.”

My blood chilled.

“The Vances owned politicians?”

“They influenced them.”

Mercer added, “That's why this investigation has taken years.”

Ethan continued.

“I tried to expose them.”

“And that's why you disappeared?”

“Yes.”

He hesitated.

“And because of you.”

I stared at him.

“What did I have to do with it?”

“You were investigating them too.”

I shook my head.

“I don't remember.”

“You were an investigative accountant.”

I froze.

“What?”

Natalie nodded.

“You changed your identity after the accident.”

I stared at her.

“That isn't possible.”

“You were Clara Bennett before you became Clara Vance.”

The room seemed to tilt.

Memories began returning.

Documents.

Bank statements.

A hotel room.

Ethan.

A kiss.

A promise.

And then—

A car crash.

I pressed my fingers against my temples.

“I remember.”

Ethan's eyes filled with tears.

“You remembered me.”

“You were the man I loved.”

Julian's voice suddenly echoed from the doorway.

“I knew it.”

We turned.

Julian stood behind the glass.

He had been listening.

His expression was shattered.

“You loved my brother.”

I stared at him.

“Yes.”

He looked at Ethan.

“You stole my wife.”

Ethan stood.

“She was never yours.”

Julian laughed bitterly.

“You married her.”

“Because you were told to.”

Julian's smile disappeared.

“What?”

Ethan looked at me.

“Your father ordered Julian to marry you.”

I felt sick.

“Why?”

“Because he wanted access to your research.”

Julian stared at his brother.

“That isn't true.”

Ethan looked at him.

“You were never the husband.”

“You were the assignment.”

Julian's face collapsed.

He looked at me.

For the first time, I saw genuine regret.

“I didn't know.”

I answered quietly.

“You didn't have to know.”

He looked at my stomach.

“Is the baby mine?”

I didn't answer.

Ethan did.

“No.”

Julian closed his eyes.

Then he whispered:

“Then who is the child they took seven years ago?”

A federal agent entered.

He held a photograph.

“We found her.”

Everyone turned.

The photograph showed a little girl.

Seven years old.

Dark hair.

Blue eyes.

And around her neck—

A silver pendant.

The exact pendant Ethan had given me before the accident.

My daughter was alive.

And she was living under another name.
