Chapter 1 - 2:00 P.M.

The second hand moved.

One tick.

Then another.

2:00 p.m.

For three long seconds, nothing happened.

Julian stared at me.

His mother stared at me.

Arthur Vance stared at the broken watch in my trembling hand.

Then, from somewhere outside the mansion, came the distant sound of sirens.

Julian frowned.

“What is that?”

I didn't answer.

Another siren joined the first.

Then another.

The sound grew louder.

Guests began turning toward the windows.

Chloe's smile disappeared.

Arthur's face hardened.

“Julian,” he said quietly. “Did you call security?”

“No.”

The first black SUV came through the iron gates.

Then a second.

Then a third.

Guests rushed toward the windows.

Someone screamed.

Blue lights flashed across the white marble walls.

And then the front doors exploded inward.

“FEDERAL AGENTS!”

The room froze.

Men and women in dark jackets flooded the foyer.

Weapons were drawn, but pointed toward the floor.

Badges flashed.

Commands thundered through the mansion.

“EVERYONE STAY WHERE YOU ARE!”

“PUT YOUR HANDS WHERE WE CAN SEE THEM!”

Julian stepped backward.

“What the hell is happening?”

I slowly pushed myself upright.

Pain tore through my abdomen.

I nearly collapsed again.

But I refused to let them see me break.

One of the agents saw me.

His expression changed instantly.

“Ma’am, don't move.”

He hurried toward me.

“Are you injured?”

I looked at Julian.

“Yes.”

The agent followed my gaze.

His jaw tightened.

“Sir, step away from her.”

Julian laughed nervously.

“This is my wife.”

The agent looked at the blood on my dress.

“Then you should have protected her.”

Julian's face went pale.

Arthur immediately stepped forward.

“I am Arthur Vance. You have no authority to enter my home.”

The agent reached into his jacket.

“Arthur Vance?”

“Yes.”

“You're under federal investigation.”

The room erupted.

Beatrice screamed.

Chloe grabbed Julian's arm.

“What does that mean?”

Arthur's confidence finally cracked.

“On what charges?”

The agent unfolded a document.

“Conspiracy. Wire fraud. Money laundering. Tax evasion. Financial crimes involving interstate transactions.”

Silence.

Then Arthur looked at me.

His eyes changed.

Not confusion.

Not fear.

Recognition.

“You.”

I said nothing.

He stared at me as though seeing me for the first time.

“You did this.”

I smiled faintly.

“No.”

I glanced toward the federal agents surrounding his mansion.

“You did.”

Julian's face twisted with rage.

“You set us up!”

I laughed softly.

“No, Julian.”

I placed one hand over my belly.

“You spent fourteen months destroying your own family.”

Then the pain suddenly became unbearable.

My knees buckled.

The agent caught me before I hit the floor.

“She's bleeding!”

Everything became chaos.

“Call EMS!”

“Get her outside!”

“Move!”

As they carried me toward the door, I heard Julian shouting behind me.

“You can't do this!”

I turned my head.

He was being forced against the wall.

His expensive suit was wrinkled.

His perfect hair was disheveled.

For the first time since I'd met him...

He looked powerless.

Our eyes met.

His lips moved.

“I loved you.”

I almost laughed.

Almost.

Instead, I whispered the words I'd been waiting fourteen months to say.

“You loved what you thought I was.”

Then the ambulance doors slammed shut.

And the world disappeared into darkness.

When I woke up, there was a ceiling above me.

White.

Bright.

Blurred.

A monitor beeped beside my head.

I tried to move.

Pain immediately shot through my body.

A nurse appeared.

“Don't move.”

“My baby?”

The nurse's expression softened.

“Your baby is alive.”

I closed my eyes.

A tear escaped.

“Thank God.”

“There's some bleeding, and the doctors are monitoring you closely. You're eight months pregnant, so they're being very careful.”

I swallowed.

“Julian?”

The nurse hesitated.

“He's not here.”

I opened my eyes.

“Good.”

She looked surprised.

I stared at the ceiling.

“How long have I been unconscious?”

“About two hours.”

Two hours.

Enough time for the FBI to tear through the Vance empire.

But not enough time to finish what I'd started.

Because the raid wasn't the end.

It was only the beginning.

A quiet knock came from the door.

The nurse turned.

A man in a dark federal suit stepped inside.

Mid-fifties.

Gray hair.

Calm eyes.

He closed the door behind him.

“Mrs. Vance?”

“Yes?”

“My name is Daniel Mercer.”

He placed an identification card on the table.

“I've been overseeing the investigation into the Vance organization.”

I stared at him.

“You said organization.”

He nodded.

“Because what you uncovered is much bigger than financial fraud.”

My heartbeat quickened.

“What do you mean?”

He pulled a chair beside my bed.

“Your husband's family isn't simply hiding money.”

He lowered his voice.

“They've been using legitimate businesses to move money for several criminal organizations.”

I stared at him.

“I suspected.”

“You knew?”

“I suspected.”

He studied me.

“You were very careful.”

“I had to be.”

He opened a folder.

Inside were photographs.

Bank transfers.

Property records.

Shipping manifests.

Names.

Dates.

Accounts.

Then he placed one final photograph on my bed.

My blood ran cold.

It was Chloe.

But she wasn't standing beside Julian.

She was standing beside another man.

A man I recognized immediately.

Daniel watched my face.

“You know him?”

I nodded slowly.

“That's Marcus Vance.”

Julian's older brother.

The man supposedly killed in a boating accident six years earlier.

I stared at the photograph.

“He's dead.”

Daniel shook his head.

“No.”

He leaned closer.

“Marcus Vance is alive.”

My mouth went dry.

“And he's the person who has been controlling the operation from outside the country.”

I looked at the photograph again.

Chloe wasn't smiling.

She was terrified.

Daniel closed the folder.

“And there's something else.”

“What?”

He paused.

“Your husband wasn't supposed to be at that baby shower.”

I frowned.

“What?”

“Someone changed his schedule.”

“Who?”

Daniel looked directly into my eyes.

“Your mother-in-law.”

A chill ran through me.

“Why?”

“Because they wanted you dead.”

The monitor beside me began beeping faster.

Daniel remained perfectly still.

“They didn't expect the FBI to arrive at 2:00.”

I stared at him.

“How did you know?”

His expression became almost unreadable.

“Because you weren't the only person inside that mansion working with us.”

The door opened.

A woman in a federal jacket stepped inside.

She removed her sunglasses.

My breath stopped.

I knew her.

I'd seen her at the Vance mansion dozens of times.

She had always been introduced as Arthur's personal assistant.

But now she walked toward my bed and placed a badge on the table.

“Hello, Clara.”

I stared at her.

“You're FBI?”

She smiled.

“Undercover for eleven months.”

Then she whispered:

“And I need to tell you what your husband was planning to do with your baby.”

My heart stopped.

“What?”

She looked toward the hallway.

Then locked the door.

And whispered:

“Your baby wasn't the heir they were fighting over.”

May you like

She opened another file.

“They were fighting over who your baby's biological father really is.”
