Chapter 13 - ELENA’S CONFESSION

Matteo chose the old Moretti social club.

It had been closed for twelve years.

Vittorio Moretti once held meetings there every Sunday.

Alessandro remembered being seven years old, carrying coffee cups for men who pinched his cheek and later ordered people beaten.

The building smelled exactly the same.

Old wood.

Cigars.

Dust.

Sophia wore body armor beneath her coat.

Marco’s team surrounded the block.

Federal agents waited two streets away.

Alessandro entered first.

Sophia behind him.

Elena sat beneath a hanging light.

Matteo stood beside the bar.

No visible weapon.

That meant weapons everywhere.

“You brought her.”

Matteo sounded annoyed.

Sophia replied.

“You keep kidnapping people I know.”

Elena almost smiled despite the blood on her face.

Matteo shook his head.

“I understand why Daniel loved you.”

Sophia’s expression hardened.

“You don’t get to talk about him.”

“Everybody says that.”

Alessandro looked around.

“Where are your men?”

“Gone.”

“Then this is over.”

Matteo poured himself whiskey.

“It was over years ago.”

“Untie Elena.”

“In a moment.”

He looked toward Sophia.

“Did they tell you who ordered Daniel’s death?”

“Luca confessed.”

“Luca confessed to shooting at him.”

Sophia’s face changed.

Matteo smiled.

“That is not what I asked.”

Alessandro’s jaw tightened.

“Matteo.”

“Your father ordered it.”

Silence.

Elena closed her eyes.

Sophia looked at Alessandro.

He seemed genuinely shocked.

“No.”

Matteo laughed.

“There it is. The loyal son.”

“Luca admitted—”

“Luca followed instructions.”

Sophia turned toward Elena.

“Is that true?”

Elena began crying.

Alessandro stared.

“Aunt Elena.”

She looked at him.

“I’m sorry.”

His face emptied.

“Did my father order Daniel killed?”

“Yes.”

The word destroyed something.

Sophia sat down without realizing it.

“Why?”

Elena’s voice shook.

“Daniel threatened to expose everything. Vittorio wanted the card.”

“Daniel wouldn’t give it to him.”

“No.”

“So my husband died because Alessandro’s father wanted to protect his empire.”

“Yes.”

Sophia looked at Alessandro.

He could not meet her eyes.

Not because he had done it.

Because everything she suffered traced back to his name.

Matteo poured another drink.

“Now you understand.”

“No.”

Sophia stood.

“You think this proves something about Alessandro?”

Matteo looked amused.

“It proves Morettis destroy everything.”

“You’re a Moretti.”

His smile faded.

“So is Luca. So was Vittorio.”

She pointed toward Elena.

“She chose silence.”

Then toward Alessandro.

“He chose something else.”

Matteo laughed.

“You actually believe he’s different?”

“I believe people become different when they stop defending what they were.”

Alessandro finally looked at her.

Matteo’s jaw tightened.

“Beautiful.”

He reached beneath the bar.

Alessandro drew his weapon.

Matteo held up a dead-man switch.

A button.

“Shoot me.”

Nobody moved.

“Explosives?”

Alessandro asked.

Matteo smiled.

“Enough.”

Sophia’s stomach dropped.

“Where?”

“Basement. Support columns.”

Alessandro’s earpiece clicked.

Marco had heard.

Evacuation began outside.

Matteo looked at Elena.

“She wanted to save the family.”

He laughed.

“Now she gets to die in its oldest house.”

Elena lifted her chin.

“No.”

Matteo glanced at her.

“What?”

“The family is not the house.”

His smile disappeared.

Elena looked at Alessandro.

“It is not the name.”

Then at Sophia.

“It is not the money.”

She began crying again.

“I learned too late.”

Matteo shouted.

“Enough.”

He raised the trigger.

Bruno barked.

Everyone froze.

The dog stood in the rear doorway.

And beside him—

Emma.

Sophia’s soul left her body.

“EMMA!”

Marco appeared behind the child.

His face was furious.

“She got out of the car.”

Emma had apparently hidden in the rear security SUV with Bruno.

Nobody had noticed until Bruno followed Alessandro’s scent into the building.

Matteo stared.

Then smiled.

“Well.”

Sophia moved toward Emma.

Matteo raised the trigger.

“Stop.”

Emma froze.

Bruno did not.

The dog walked toward Matteo.

“Bruno,” Alessandro whispered.

The Cane Corso continued.

Matteo backed away.

“Stop him.”

Nobody did.

Emma spoke.

“Bruno.”

The dog stopped.

Everyone looked at the child.

Emma pointed toward Matteo.

“Bad.”

Matteo laughed.

“Smart kid.”

He pressed his thumb tighter against the trigger.

Bruno watched his hand.

Alessandro saw the shift.

The dog understood something was wrong.

Matteo stepped backward.

A loose floorboard cracked beneath his heel.

His balance changed.

His thumb moved.

Bruno lunged.

Matteo dropped the trigger.

Alessandro dove.

Caught it.

The device struck the floor but the button remained unpressed.

Matteo ran.

Marco’s men entered.

Matteo reached the rear stairs.

Federal agents blocked the exit.

He stopped.

For the first time, Matteo Moretti had nowhere to go.

Alessandro held the trigger in one hand.

His gun in the other.

Matteo looked at him.

“Do it.”

Alessandro lowered the gun.

Matteo’s face twisted.

“Do it!”

“No.”

“You weak—”

“Maybe.”

Alessandro looked at federal agents.

“Take him.”

Matteo screamed as they restrained him.

“You think you can become clean?”

Alessandro said nothing.

“You think she’ll forgive you?”

Sophia held Emma.

Matteo laughed wildly.

“You think that dog and kid turn you into a good man?”

Alessandro finally answered.

“No.”

Matteo stopped.

“They reminded me I still have time to become a better one.”

Matteo was dragged away.

Bomb technicians disarmed the explosives.

Elena survived.

The building survived.

The Moretti empire did not.

Over the next seventy-two hours, federal raids dismantled what remained.

Accounts disappeared.

Illegal businesses closed.

Captains testified.

Matteo was charged.

Luca’s confession became part of the case.

Vittorio’s ledger became evidence.

Alessandro Moretti—the man everyone once believed untouchable—prepared to testify against the empire bearing his own name.

Sophia found him outside the social club after sunrise.

He sat on the curb.

Emma asleep against him.

Bruno lying at his feet.

Sophia sat beside them.

“You okay?”

“No.”

She nodded.

“Good.”

He looked at her.

“Good?”

May you like

“You’re getting better at truth.”

This time he smiled.
