Chapter 11 - THE LEDGER

The lake house sat ninety miles north of Chicago.

Alessandro arrived before dawn.

Sophia was not with him.

For once, she agreed to stay behind.

Emma had a fever from stress and smoke exposure.

Bruno remained beside her.

Marco led the entry team.

The house was empty.

But smoke rose from the basement.

“Move.”

They descended.

A steel door stood open.

Inside the vault, papers burned inside a metal barrel.

Matteo was gone.

Again.

Alessandro kicked the barrel over.

Marco’s men used extinguishers.

Half the documents were destroyed.

Half survived.

Among them was a black leather ledger.

Alessandro opened it.

His father’s handwriting covered the pages.

Names.

Amounts.

Dates.

Judges.

Police officials.

Business owners.

Politicians.

And family.

One name appeared more than anyone else.

VITTORIO MORETTI.

Not as payer.

Receiver.

Alessandro read.

Then understood.

The organization he inherited was not what his father had described.

Vittorio had not merely tolerated corruption around him.

He had built it.

Daniel had discovered proof not only against Matteo and Luca.

Against the entire foundation of the Moretti family.

Marco looked over his shoulder.

“This could bury everybody.”

“Yes.”

“Including you?”

“Some pages.”

Marco’s face tightened.

“What do we do?”

The old answer would have been fire.

Destroy it.

Protect family.

Protect business.

Protect reputation.

Alessandro closed the ledger.

“Call the prosecutor.”

Marco stared.

“Everything?”

“Everything.”

“Boss.”

“Everything.”

Marco looked at him for several seconds.

Then nodded.

They returned to the estate that afternoon.

Sophia was in the library.

Emma slept on the couch.

Bruno lay beside her.

Alessandro placed Daniel’s wedding ring on the table.

Sophia looked at it.

“I had it cleaned.”

She picked it up.

“Thank you.”

He sat.

“We found the ledger.”

Her eyes lifted.

“Daniel was right?”

“Yes.”

“About Luca?”

“And more.”

“How much more?”

“Enough.”

She understood.

“What will you do?”

“I gave it to federal investigators.”

Sophia stared at him.

“All of it?”

“Yes.”

“Even evidence against you?”

“Yes.”

She sat back.

“Why?”

Alessandro looked toward Emma.

“Because every time someone in my family says they’re protecting someone, what they actually protect is the system that hurt them.”

Sophia said nothing.

“My father protected the organization.”

He continued.

“Elena protected the family. Daniel protected you by lying. I protected everyone by controlling everything.”

He looked at her.

“And Emma almost died anyway.”

Sophia touched the ring.

“Daniel loved us.”

“I know.”

“He was wrong.”

“Yes.”

Both truths could exist.

That realization hurt.

The door opened.

Elena entered.

She looked older than she had days earlier.

No camel coat.

No makeup.

Just a tired woman.

“I heard about the ledger.”

Alessandro did not invite her to sit.

“What do you want?”

“To tell Sophia something.”

Sophia looked up.

Elena walked over.

“The night Daniel died, he called me from the car.”

“You told me.”

“I didn’t tell you everything.”

Alessandro’s jaw tightened.

Elena continued.

“He asked me to take care of you and Emma if something happened.”

Sophia’s eyes filled.

“I didn’t.”

“No.”

“I was afraid.”

“Yes.”

Elena accepted that.

“I watched from a distance.”

“What does that mean?”

“I knew when you moved apartments. I knew when Emma started daycare. I knew when you applied here.”

Sophia stared.

“You arranged my job?”

“No.”

“Then?”

“I made sure your application wasn’t rejected.”

Alessandro’s expression changed.

“You brought her here.”

“I brought her close enough that someone could watch.”

Sophia stood.

“You brought my daughter into the place Daniel died trying to escape?”

“I believed Alessandro could protect you.”

“Without telling him who she was?”

Elena looked at Alessandro.

“He knew.”

Sophia turned.

“What?”

Alessandro froze.

He had known Daniel’s widow applied.

He had approved her hiring.

But he had never told Elena.

“You knew before I started?”

“Yes.”

“How?”

“Your surname.”

“There are thousands of Carters.”

“Your emergency contact information. Daniel’s name appeared on your background file.”

Sophia stepped backward.

“You hired me because of him.”

“At first.”

“At first?”

“I wanted to know whether Daniel had left anything with you.”

She stared.

“So I was an investigation.”

“Yes.”

“And Emma?”

“No.”

His answer came instantly.

“Emma was never part of it.”

“But she became part of it.”

“Yes.”

Sophia looked away.

Anger.

Betrayal.

Understanding.

All competing.

“When did it change?”

Alessandro knew what she meant.

“When did she stop being Daniel Carter’s daughter and become Emma?”

He looked toward the sleeping child.

“The courtyard.”

Sophia almost laughed.

“The bath.”

“Yes.”

“And me?”

That question was harder.

Elena quietly left the room.

Alessandro and Sophia remained.

“When did I stop being Daniel Carter’s widow?”

He looked at her.

“I don’t know.”

“Try.”

He did.

The kitchen table.

Her anger.

Her refusal to obey.

Coffee in the cottage.

The night of the broken window.

The way she had trusted him enough to drop Emma into his arms during the fire.

“I think,” he said slowly, “it happened before I realized it.”

Sophia’s breath changed.

Neither moved.

Then Emma woke.

“Mommy.”

The moment broke.

Sophia went to her.

Alessandro stood.

Emma looked at him.

“You leaving?”

“I have work.”

“No.”

He glanced at Sophia.

Emma patted the couch.

“Sit.”

Alessandro sighed.

Sophia smiled despite herself.

He sat.

Emma crawled between them.

Bruno rested his head across Alessandro’s foot.

For almost five minutes, nobody in the room knew fear.

Then Marco entered.

He stopped at the sight.

Something like amusement flickered.

“Sorry.”

“What?”

“We have confirmation.”

“Of?”

“Matteo crossed back into Illinois.”

Alessandro stood.

Marco continued.

“He sent a video to every captain who hasn’t chosen a side.”

“What video?”

Marco handed him the phone.

Matteo appeared on screen.

Behind him stood stacks of weapons and several armed men.

“The Moretti name dies this week,” Matteo said.

May you like

Then he smiled.

“And Alessandro dies first.”
