Chapter 6: The Shadow on the Balcony

The heavy oak doors of the mansion shut out the blinding California sun, but the coldness inside the house was far more oppressive. Christopher carried Emma up the grand spiral staircase, his arms locked around her small, shivering frame. Every step felt like a march through a minefield.

He didn't stop until he reached the heavy, double-paneled doors of the master suite. Without knocking, he kicked the door open.

Inside, the room was dimly lit, smelling faintly of expensive lavender oil and medicinal rubbing alcohol. Estelle grandly sat in her high-backed armchair, her frail hand resting on a silver cane. Her eyes, sharp as flint despite her advanced age, locked onto her son and granddaughter.

"You look hysterical, Christopher," Estelle said, her voice thin but dripping with icy authority. "A gentleman does not cause a scene in front of the staff."

Christopher didn't yell. His voice was dangerously quiet, a low growl that shook the crystal chandelier above them. "Juliette is in handcuffs, Mother. And I have the recording."

Estelle’s hand tightened on the silver cane, the only physical sign that her composure had cracked. She looked at Emma, who buried her face deeper into Christopher's neck.

"That child," Estelle whispered, sneering, "is an administrative error. A bastard born from a woman who wanted nothing but our name. I did what was necessary to protect the lineage."

"You tried to drown a four-year-old girl," Christopher said, the sheer horror of the reality finally settling into his chest. "You didn't protect the family, Mother. You turned it into a slaughterhouse."
